Reader's Guide to the Silmarillion
By A Customer
I don't recommend this for two reasons:
First, as a reader's guide, one would expect it to clarify the material. It doesn't. It's largely a retelling in the author's own not especially wonderful style, with only a brief nod to thematic and source material. I don't think this is going to help readers understand the book.
More importantly, the book is full of inaccuracies! The author has chosen to "characterize" characters like Maedhros and Beren, giving his own idea of what's going on in their heads--characterizations that are unsupported in the text. "Maedhros' mind was in a turmoil", things like that. One can make such interpretations in terms of one's personal understanding of the text, but they are not in fact explicit in Tolkien's words. And there are literal inaccuracies, mostly small, but annoying -- "elfin" for "elven", the assertion that none of Feanor's sons were married (not the case), and so on. It's clear that the author isn't familiar with Christopher Tolkien's exegeses, but even allowing for that he has not represented the published Silmarillion text accurately here.

Disappointing Silmarillion Book, author's book on LOTR is classic. Errors abound, but author did have a few good ideas I have not seen elsewhere.

Great for casual readers - not scholars of Tolkien
By Douglas Bryenldson
This is less a scholarly work - and more an overview (i.e. like Cliff Notes) for casual readers of Tolkien who don't have the time or devotion to really delve into Tolkien's seminal Middle Earth corpus - the Silmarillion.

Papa: A Personal Memoir, by Gregory H. Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway's youngest son remembers the legendary author as father - a life with him that was many things, but never, ever dull. Bimini, Sun Valley, beautiful Finca Vigia in Cuba. Deep-sea fishing, shooting, meeting his father's friends, falling a little in love with his father's wives. Being nursed out of a polio attack by his father. On the dark side: his father's rages, his passion for fame, his descent into madness, the painful estrangement between father and son.

One of the Best Short Ones...
By Jason Lilly
While researching Hemingway's life, I was happy to discover this brief biography of one of the most intriguing and talented American writers. Gregory "Gig" Hemingway stumbled from complete admiration for his father, to fear, to frustration. This is the best short biography of Hemingway I have read from someone who knew him well, better than all scholars, professors, and Hemingway fans. It is not the most extensive study, but if you're looking for a brief and powerful biography, this is the best choice.

Pretty interesting, but forgettable.
By Sebastian Wasserzug
I'm not an expert on Hemingway and I haven't read more than just a couple of his books, but I thought this was a short, interesting book by one of Hemingway's sons, Gregory. He's not a writer and doesn't seem neither to try to become one nor to emulate his father's talents (although he tells us that he did try just both, when he was young). Instead, he gives more than a couple of interesting anecdotes. He puts some light on Hemingway's obsessions with his image and macho figure. At the time I read this book, a probably silly association came to my mind: Walt Whitman (another American hero from another age) and his supposed homosexuality -a complex statement that I, basicaly, disagree with. There're some aspects in Hemingway's postures in this book that made me think about his own unassumed conflicts with homosexual feelings and his image as a boxer and a 'viril' writer. Excellent pictures in the hard cover edition I've read.

Interesting, but dated
By Laurie J. Neverman
Still, some of the basics stand the test of time. My favorite advice from the book is to avoid raising turkeys because they are stupid and disease prone. I would put this in the category of quaint, general interest gardening book. It doesn't really address homesteading in the sense I was looking for, but it does give a good overview of the basics of gardening, "orcharding", and suggestions for small livestock.

fun book for kids (and grown-ups, too!)
By S. H. Jolly
This is one of the few books for little kids by the author of the famous Black stallion series. This is the second in a series of 3 that I can find. The first one was Little Black, a Pony, which I purchased for an 8 yr old boy who is interested in horse books. It was a cute story about a boy and his pony and how he let his pony down but soon repented of his ways and made up with his best friend. This next one, also for the same child, shows our hero losing his pony to the glamour and excitement of circus life and then finding out that friendship is more important than fame, as the two of them reunite. The third and last book in the series is about Little Black getting into a race with older kids and bigger ponies, and introduces the boy's older brother. It is harder to find but worth the search. These books not only teach kids about the responsibility of caring for a companion animal but also about more grown up issues like what a real friend is willing to do and how to get along with other kids that might not agree with your values. Not great literature, but appropriate for readers in the intended age group who hopefully will move on to the more grown up books by Walter Farley and his son Steven, which are more complex stories for older children but still based on the same values.

From Publishers Weekly
The drama and fascination of natural disasters provide prime material to entice young independent readers, particularly those who prefer stories based on true incidents. In this volume of the Step into Reading series, the account of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius describes village life 2000 years ago, including the activities of "the family who lived in one of the biggest houses. . . . The father began to dress. His slave helped him." From this noncommittal narration readers glean many facets of an ancient lifestyle, reinforced by deft pastel illustrations. Meanwhile, tension mounts; we know "something terrible is going to happen." The eruption and its aftermath are vividly described, as is the excitement when the buried town is rediscovered centuries later. A lively and factual glimpse of a devastating moment in history, in an accessible, attractive package. Ages 6-8.
Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 A flawed attempt at conveying a complex historical subject to inexperienced readers. Information about Pompeii is conveyed in one long narrative arbitrarily divided into three chapters. There is a brief description of what a volcano is and how it works, followed by a fictionalized account of what the people in Pompeii were doing on the day of the eruption and what happened to the inhabitants when Vesuvius blew up. The final chapter gives some information about the rediscovery of Pompeii and its excavation by archaeologists. In an attempt to simplify the ideas in the book, Kunhardt has oversimplified the prose. Sentences are choppyalmost joltingand reminiscent of a basal reader. Pronunciation guides are given in the text in a jarring manner: ``These pictures are called mosaics. Say: mo-ZAY-iks.'' The cartoonlike illustrations are colorful and attractive, but they are not clearly drawn or labeled. This book doesn't work as a picture book or as nonfiction. Libraries would do better to wait for better quality easy history books to come along. Ellen Loughran, Brooklyn Public Lib .

Excellent Introduction to Probability
By Gabriel Robert McNeill
I first noticed this book during the time that I spent at UC Berkeley as an undergraduate applied mathematics major. It was being used for Stat 101, and though I was not taking that course, I bought it because it looked even from casual inspection to be very well laid out, covering important and interesting issues in basic probability.
The strongest feature of this book from my point of view is its conciseness. Much is presented in as short a time as possible, and because of that the book is much more readable than many others of its level. In addition to conciseness, the authors (in my edition Hoel, Port, and Stone) have made a commendable effort to present the reader with clear and concrete definitions, compact theorems (many proven), and abundant useful examples. In the back of the book nearly all of the solutions of the chapter exercises are given, unlike many books where answers to only the odd problems are given. I believe that this book is ideal for self-study, and that much use of it could also be made as a textbook for an undergraduate course in probability. The exercises are not very difficult, but they are by no means trivial, and much can be learned from them. At the end of a close study of this book the reader would be ready to enter into a program of undergraduate level mathematical statistics, or into a further study of probability with the confidence inspired by a firm understanding of the most fundamental and key concepts in probability theory.

Absolutely a first-class textbook on elementary probability!
By Mountaineer
This book is an excellent choice for anyone who is interested in learning the elementary probability theory(i.e. calculus-based probability rather than measure theoretic probability). The book assumes the readers have no prior exposure to this subject. However, the readers are expected to have a working knowledge of calculus. While there are many textbooks of the same nature, this book stands out by its clarity, completeness and elegance. The authors present the material in an extremely clear way that any serious reader is able to follow from the beginning to the end. It is absolutely a first-class textbook! A must for anyone interested in elementary probability. The only part I don't like is that the authors use "density function" instead of "probability mass function" for discrete random variable.

Review
"A straightforward yet fascinating description of the labyrinth beneath the feet of any city dweller. And what a complex covered world David Macaulay reveals! He invents an intersection of two streets and proceeds to show what we all might find if we dared to descend through that Alice-in-Wonderland manhole." The New York Times

anatomy of an infrastructure
By David Group
This book ranks as one of Macaulay's best, as it reveals the networks of systems that are the lifeblood of a city, from various building foundations to sewers to subways, showing how they are constructed and sometimes interact with each other. The text, though minimal, is packed with information, which is supplemented by the superb and detailed drawings. One of the coolest aspects of the book, though, is the views from below, as if a rat with x-ray vision were able to gaze up at this intricate maze of technological wonders. Macaulay's sense of humor is evident throughout, as seen by his inclusion of various critters (including an alligator and an elephant), lots of references to dogs and fire hydrants, a billboard ad for his book PYRAMID, and even a human skull and hand (!!) in one drawing of an excavation. Great fun to read and highly recommended.

Great Visual Imagination and Wit
By Marco Antonio Abarca
Most book illustrators portray buildings from an eagle's eye perspective. A few talented illustrators will open up the buildings and give insightful cross sectional views. What makes this book so special is that David Macaulay shows us buildings from the perspective of looking up from the bedrock on which the building rests. This is unique and is typical of Macaulay's great visual imagination and wit.

This book concentrates on a big city corner where four large buildings sit. The story begins with the foundation excavation, the pouring of foundation pilings and moves up to building infrastructure that sits just below the city street. We are all aware that a great deal of engineering goes into making large cities livable. However, there is nothing like a well illustrated book to help one understand the sheer complexity of our modern infrastructure.

I would recommend this book to older children with an interest in the physical world around them. It is also a great book for adults with an interest in architecture and urban planning. There are illustrators with better drafting skills than David Macaulay but when it comes to sheer imagination, Macaulay is in a league of his own. Highly recommended.

"What are those round metal things in the street?"
By KURT H KROHN
What Mr. Macaulay does is pull up a city by the roots, shake the dirt off, and take a no-nonsense (well, maybe a little nonsense) look at what is revealed. The illustrations are clear and informative, with just a touch of whimsy. The book covers sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water lines, electricity, telephone, subways and building foundations. A gift for aspiring civil engineers of all ages!

Save your tooth fairy money
By D. Asher
Adding "Queen Denteena" and the "Decay Prevention Ball" to the basic tooth fairy tale is more than a stretch -- it is a strain!
Queen Denteena shouts "Idiot!" twice at the boy in the story because he has lost his tooth -- not helpful to those of us teaching 5 - 8 year olds to avoid name-calling. The story ends with the passive tooth fairy appeasing the aggressive Queen Denteena with the help of the boy. Good does not triumph over bad in this story - it simply figures out another way to get along. This results in the tooth fairy's report card going from all "F's" to all "A's." Everyone has a good time at the Decay Prevention Ball.
There are too many story twists and no satisfying ending. Oh, yes... the boy does receive a quarter.

Just awful
By Lori
Even before the fairy Queen Denteena called the little boy an IDIOT, I wasn't impressed with the book. The protagonist is the only character in the story who doesn't have a name. The plot is pretty dumb. The illustrations are atrocious -- the tooth fairy is completely unappealing, and even the little boy in the the book looks like a middle-aged man. I was absolutely shocked to find the word IDIOT not once, but twice. Who on earth writes this stuff? There are much better choices out there for young readers.

No Tooth, No Quarter!
By Laura Werner
This book is a great book for a young reader! It shows you the perspective of the tooth fairy, and how she needs that tooth to give you money. The leader of the tooth fairy community is mean, but the little boy out foxes her. Your children will love it!

Unfinished Tales, by J.R.R. Tolkien

Edited by Christopher Tolkien, Unfinished Tales is a posthumous collection of narratives ranging from the time of The Silmarillion - the Elder days of Middle-earth - to the end of the War of the Ring in The Lord of the Rings. Among the stories told are Gandalf's account of sending the dwarves to Bibo's party at Bag End, the tale of the appearance of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor along the coast of Beleriand, and a description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan. It also contains the only story from the long ages of Numenor before its downfall, and all that is known of such matters as the Five Wizards, the Palantiri, and the legend of Amroth.

Unfinished, but not unremarkable.
By Tuor
When JRR Tolkien died, he left a massive amount of material that, for various reasons, had not been published. Some of this material was sufficiently comprehensive and consistant with published materials that Tolkien's son, Christopher, was able to compile it into 'The Silmarillion'.
But there were also several stories, polished, but not quite complete, which pertained to the events in 'The Lord of the Rings' -- things like the story of how Isildur lost the One Ring; like what, exactly, were the Wizards: who sent them and why? Questions like 'How did Galadriel and Celeborn come to rule Lorien?' and 'Just what happened at the Fords of Isen when Saruman attacked Rohan and Theoden's son, Theodred, was slain?'
All these questions and many more are addressed in the many unfinished tales that are to be found in this book: tales from all three of the ages of Middle-earth; from heroes such as Tuor and Turin in the First Age, to Bilbo and Gandalf in the Third. Almost every tale is told in a different style, but each is satisfying, up to the point where it breaks off: then frustration and speculation set in, but also a deep appreciation for the scope and grandeur of Middle-earth and the man who created it.

A great companion for LoTR and Tolkien fans
By ReviewDude
Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-earth A great companion for LoTR and Tolkien fans. Although it's a book with different transcripts of Tolkien compiled and edited by his son, Christopher, it gives you a glimpse of the vast world of middle-earth that Tolkien created. I personally enjoyed the tale of Galadriel and Celeborn, which gives you more detail of this mysterious yet intriguing character and the many possibilities of his origins. The children of hurin is great here, but it is more developed in the book that treats this story alone (which i also own and enjoyed). One of my favorites is the tale of Aldarion and Erendis, one that i read in a day. The tale about how the Gandalf convinced Thorin about the journey to Bilbo's house is also a great piece.

The good thing with this book is that for people who read the hobbit, LoTR and the simalirion can use this book to connect everything under a single story line (which is what Tolkien intended in the first place) and with the appendices you can expand that even more (some say that because it's Christopher Tolkien who edited it it's not the same, but Christopher was his father's confidant in everything regarding middle-earth, and i think there is no better person than him to fill in the pieces we as Tolkien fans want to find to connect this incredible literary universe). For casual Tolkien readers maybe this is too dense and not that interesting since it's like the tittle describes "Unfinished Tales", which indicates that most of the stories are bits and pieces found in Tolkien's archives. But for us who want to go deeper in this universe, is a must have!

Good for Tolkien Fans
By K. Mueller
found Unfinished Tales to be a pretty good book. It is more piecemeal than the completed novels, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, which was in progress when J.R.R. Tolkien died. The Silmarillion was pulled together and edited by his son Christopher.

The book is separated into four sections. The first section is the First Age and contains stories on the coming of Tuor to Gondolin and the tale of Hurin's Children. The Tale of Hurin's children in touched on in the Silmarillion but this story is much more in-depth and while fans of the Tolkien mythologies know is a tragic tale this version is most complete.

The second section of the book is the Second Age and focuses much on the Numenor. There is a description of the island of Numenor. This section contains the tale of the Mariner's Wife, which is another great and tragic story among the tales of Middle-Earth. There is a section on various kings of Numenor and a History of Galadriel and Celeborn. I found the history of Galadriel very interesting, and full of information that made events in later tales more meaningful

The third section of Unfinished Tales is the Third Age. This portion of the book contains: The Disaster on the Gladden Fields, a history on the relationship between Gondor and Rohan, The Quest for Erebor, a portion on the hunt for the One Ring, And the Battles of the Rods of Isen, which ultimately lead to the death of Theodred, the son of King Thoden. This section of the book had lots of additional information for fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbits to consume and make their enjoyment of the stories that much fuller.

The fourth and final section of the book contains sections on the Druedain (or Wild Men), the Istari (or Wizards) and the palantiri (or seeing stones). This section was also very valuable in adding information to the Lord of the Rings. I was very fond of the story The Faithful Stone and found the history of the Wild Men more colorful than expected. My suspicions about the origin of the Istari were validated in this section of the book as well. And my understanding of the palantiri went up substantially from near zero.

Overall I would suggest this book to any Tolkien fan after reading at least the Lord of the Rings but better to have read the Hobbit and Silmarillion to get the most out of the tales and told in Unfinished Tales. Unfortunately, the stories are unfinished and in a few cases I found myself really wanting more but that's just the way it goes.

A Review of Galdone's "The Magic Porridge Pot"
By Visibly Pam
I am not sure that I ever read this story as a child, but I have really enjoyed it for some reason, as have my two children (3 and 5).

The tale is one of classic silliness though it begins with a touching description of a poor mother and daughter who often have only a scrap of bread to eat. At one such time, the daughter goes into the woods, as she often does, looking for nuts and berries.

Finding nothing, she collapses in tears onto a log, only to be jarred from her fretting state by an old hag with a "pleasant but crackly voice." The old woman tells her not to worry, that she won't be hungry ever again, and offers up a small black pot. Just tell the pot `Boil, Little Pot, Boil' and at once it will fill up with delicious porridge." To stop the pot there are other words.

If you don't see it coming, chaos ensues when the mother forgets the words for making the pot stop which results in the whole town filling with delectable porridge.

The story ends with the other villagers emptying out into the street with buckets and bowls and what-not to fill up with the food. There was enough for days.

Five Stars. It is a delightful story with cute Galdone drawings. A great addition to the home library.

Nice retelling, cheerful illustrations
By waldorf_curric
I liked this retelling of the Grimm Brothers fairy tale. It is listed (not this book specifically, but this story) in Beyond the Rainbow Bridge as being an early fairy tale, suitable for 3 and 4 year olds. It has a good message about the consequences of being greedy. The only thing which I didn't really understand was when the little girl came back to halt the porridge pot, she yelled "Stop, little pot, stop!" four times in a row. I suppose this is because she has to undo the damage her mother caused by using the incorrect magic words four times (halt, enough, no more & cease) but it is a little awkward to read aloud. This would be a good book to introduce the use of synonyms to an older class as well -- each word in essence means the same thing and yet there are subtle differences between them.

Ishi, Last of His Tribe, by Theodora Kroeber, Ruth Robbins

In the early 1900s a small band of California Indians in the Yahi tribe lived in concealment, resisting the fate that had all but wiped out their people -- violent death by the invading gold seekers and settlers. In time, members of the small group died, until there remained a single survivor -- the man who became known as Ishi. This book tells the haunting, heroic story of Ishi -- the boy, the man, the lone survivor of his tribe.

A must-read for all American citizens.
By A Customer
I first decided to read this book because I was named after Ishi, and I wanted to find out why. When I finally read Kroeber's novel, I was struck with a mixed sense of pride at being able to identify with such an honest, spiritual, and kind-hearted man; disgust at how ignorantly and inexcusably the white man in power treated Ishi's people, and hence has continued to treat Native Americans throughout this country; and awe at the beauty and grace with which Kroeber writes. I am also a high school English teacher in a rural New England town. I teach this novel, and am continually struck by its ability to speak to teenagers who, for the most part, are not aware of this component of American history. Though the novel is partly fictional, as we cannot truly know, for instance, the conversations that Ishi had in the "watgurwa" with his elders as a teenage boy, Kroeber reveals to us a story based on very real, and very human, events. We read about the unwavering respect for the natural world that is so inherent in Yahi culture, and so lacking in modern American culture. We see Ishi's growth from a boy to a man as he takes on the important reponsibilities of feeding and protecting his family. We also watch as innocent Yahi are killed with the white man's "firesticks" so that their scalps can be cut off and exchanged for money. Every American citizen should know what happened to Ishi and his people; for it is American history at its best, and, unfortunately, at its worst.

ISHI, Last of His Tribe
By Nancy Iacuaniello
Over the years, I have developed a fascination for history, and Author Theodora Kroeber's story of ISHI, LAST OF HIS TRIBE certainly did not disappointment me.
Although this story may be subject to a certain amount of romanticism on the part of the Author, I found this version of Ishi's life easy to read and very enlightening. Kroeber's story of Ishi is written with warmth and sympathy, which gives us a
deeper understanding of the harsh treatment of the peaceful Yahi Indians. It provides a glimpse of how Ishi must have thought and felt; about himself, about others, and about the world around him. The Author weaves Ishi's story in a way that makes you feel as though you are there; experiencing what he experienced, struggling as he struggled. Ishi's highly peaceful nature is apparent in his extraordinary capacity towards forgiveness, despite their harsh treatment by the Saldu (white man).
I have often wondered how the Indians, especially Indians in the Northern regions, managed to survive the winter. This story provides a great deal of information about their daily life, giving us insight into their extensive knowledge for survival.
Smoking and drying of fish and meat, and storing of the y'una (acorn) barely provided them with the sustenance they needed for the winter, yet they managed to survive.
The myth that California Indians were a simple and childlike race, living only on what they could dig up from the ground, was certainly discounted with this book. Conversely, the Indians showed great wisdom and deep respect for the land, as well as
the creatures who inhabited it, being careful to preserve the land while effectively living off it. Their knowledge was then handed down from generation to generation, ensuring their success for the future - at least, until the Saldu arrived.
In truth, the treatment of the Indians by the Saldu was appalling. Early settlers had little respect for the Indians, forcing them to change their way of life, otherwise die. Sadly, Ishi spent most of his life hiding from the white man - staying downwind, living discreetly and quietly, staying off main trails and covering his tracks - living in fear of discovery. When the rest of his tribe was gone, Ishi's loneliness must have been unbearable. But Ishi was a wise man and a survivor, and he had learned that not all men were evil. His time at the Museum became acceptable - a time of plentiful food, of making friends - but more importantly a time to ensure that the history of his people would not die with him.
After reading this book, it was disturbing to discover that Ishi's brain was retained by Berkeley and the Smithsonian Institute for study after his death. Although one might understand the scientific fascination with this last member of the Yahi, this action clearly violated Ishi's own cultural belief about keeping the body whole for cremation, and his personal beliefs should have been respected. It is not surprising that a debate over scientific rights and human rights resulted, and it was nearly 100 years before Ishi's brain was returned to the Indian people, affording him the final peace and dignity that he rightfully deserved.
I have been enriched by the story of Ishi. It is a story I hope
future generations will utilize for studying the life of the California Indian. Ishi's story provides not only his language and culture, but his insight, feelings and experiences. This unique chance to share such a special part of California's past might otherwise have been lost, and I am grateful to those who had the insight to preserve this important piece of history.

Ishi: Touching Story of Cruelty to Native American
By Ashley Steepleton
The book, Ishi: Last of His Tribe, by Theodora Kroebar is a well written book, which deeply describes the life of a Yana Indian. The Yana are one of the last Native America Indian Tribes left in America. She uses great adjectives and indian words to help the readers understand. People who are intrigued by Native Americans, wars, teenage lives, and the true cruelty of human beings will be interested in reading Ishi. Ishi is a young Yana indian boy, on the verge of manhood, getting ready for the responsibilities of having to feed and fend for his family who have supported Ishi his whole life, and have a family of his own. A group of white poeple come to the lands of the Yana and try to capture the land that has belonged to Yana tribes for centuries. The white poeple slaughter the Yana tribes unmercifully, and take the land for themselves. Ishi has to watch the people he has grown up with his whole existance and the ways of his people be demolished, and he is left alone in the world. Ishi teaches people who read it a part of American history which is normally not talked about or read about. The book uses the non-fiction happenings of the Yana and adds fictional situations and turns Ishi into a beautiful story of hate and overcoming obstacles. As I read the book, I felt mixed emotions. I felt proud at being able to identify with Ishi. Ishi was the last of his people, he really did not have much to life for, and no one was left that he could relate to. Everyone feels alone and outcast at some point in their lives, and this book helps people understand and relate to Ishi and how he feels. He was a truthful, deep, spititual person and he was plucked from his life and tossed into a world which was strange and new to him. If any of the readers have ever had to move from one town to another, they know what Ishi is feeling. I also felt hatered towards how the white men ignorantly destroyed this peaceful tribe's way of life without even feeling remorse for their actions. It is horrible how the just slaughtered the tribe, with 'fire sticks' and scalped the Yana for money. It is repulsing how the white men treated the Yana and all the Native Americans, who were on this continent before us and had been living respectably and peacefully, and had such a deep understanding of the land and how to treat it and use it wisely. Ishi was easy to comprehend, with the wordings of Theodora Kroeber. Everyone in America should know about what happened to the innocent Yana tribes and the innocent Yana people, such as Ishi, and see American history for what it really is, and what it really was and what the invading, torturous, white man and his government did to begin the longest war in history (500 years) against the peaceful, loving, spiritual NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN.
