The Original Richard Scarry you loved as a kid

This edition preserves the original Richard Scarry artwork and text from the 1970's that I grew up with (and loved) as a kid. Some of the new (1990 and on) editions of Scarry stories have art that is slightly "off" from Scarry's style, and text that does not convey Scarry's wit and fun storytelling style. Rest assured that this edition has both of those!

My son (3 and 1/2) loves these stories, however...

Great stories with great characters, but if you've already purchased "Funniest Stories Ever..." then don't bother with "Bedtime Stories" because "Bedtime..." merely contains a subset of the stories found in "Funniest", with no new material what-so-ever.
This was needless to say rather disappointing to find out, following the online purchase.

This is a delightful books for young readers -- it falls in the 4-8 age range, but is probably more appropriate for 3-5 age range. Some of our favorite characters, Lowly, Huckle and friends ease younger sleepers into sleep. It was particularly helpful in lulling to sleep a newly-minted older brother who was eager not to miss any of his new baby's "action." Richard Scarry is wonderful at that!

Fond memories of this one...

I read this back in 2004 as an eigth grader and have not seen it elsewhere since, so forgive my shady memory of this book.

This collection is not perfect--there were a few stories here that were either unoriginal or just downright uninvolving, such as "The Young One", which was a rather cliched (though far from terrible) werewolf story, and "Henry Martindale, Great Dane", a story about a man who mysteriously transforms into a dog (this idea may have been novel and cute when the short was first published, today it's been done to death). There were some great works here though: "Slime", by Joseph Payne Brennan is easily the best story in the whole collection, about an ancient blob-like organism that is accidently brought ashore by seismic (sp?) activity and then proceeds to make a meal out of anything in its path--people included. I wonder if this story inspired the 1958 classic monster movie, "The Blob", and it's two remakes?

Another one I loved, that unfortunately I have a hard time remembering, was "Day of the Dragon", about a scientist who's experiments on alligators lead to a horrifying discovery that threatens to end mandkind. Another story, perhaps the most original of them all, was "The Microscopic Giants", a story about a race of tiny beings evolved to live in the arteries of the earth, who happen to have some pretty scary technology at their disposal.

I'm afraid I don't remember the other stories, but I most certainly recommend this collection--I'll have to read it again in the future.

Nostalgia that should still work for the kiddies.

Alfred Hitchcock (ed.), Alfred Hitchcock's Monster Museum (Random House, 1965)

Back before most of you were born, Alfred Hitchcock was not only a film director. Not at all. He had a rather successful television series, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour; he appeared as a character in the Three Investigators series of novels, written (well, the first eleven of them, anyway) by his friend Robert Arthur; and he edited a series of short story collections for younger readers (also, in fact, ghost-edited by Arthur). All of this has fallen quite a ways into the background now, with Hitch being remembered primarily as the director of a large number of classic films. But all of them are well worth rediscovering, both for nostalgia buffs old enough to remember it all and a new generation of younger readers looking for something more challenging than the standard pre-YA fare available these days.

Alfred Hitchcock's Monster Museum is certainly that. The majority of these stories were originally penned for adult readers, though the reading level of the collection would be solidly termed "young adult" these days. I first read this book at the age of eight or nine, and would encourage parents whose kids show an interest in monsters, pre-teen horror novels, etc., to challenge them with this. You're likely to find yourself answering a number of questions about slightly dated language (after all, while the book was compiled in 1965, some of the stories therein were originally published decades earlier), and a larger number of questions about words that the average nine-year-old in today's educational system hasn't had a hope of encountering, but the kid will come out the other end head and shoulders above his classmates in reading, vocabulary, and spelling.

The stories themselves, as usual in anthologies, vary somewhat in quality. All of them, however, are notable for having images that will haunt the reader well into adulthood (I originally picked the book up again because I wanted to re-read Joseph Payne Brennan's "Slime," which while a somewhat trite and predictable tale, is definitely an imprinter, and discovered that I remembered lines, and sometimes whole scenes, from other stories, the names of the authors of which at the time meant nothing to me-- Stephen Vincent Benet, Ray Bradbury, and Manly Wade Wellman are just some of the names I was startled to discover I'd been reading as a pre-teen), and nothing convinces a kid to read like throwing a good scare into him every now and again. The book has a definite wide range of things to scare the tykes, from mutant flying alligators to primordial living ooze to the common housecat dressed up in a tie and tails, so your kid's bound to find something in here that works. Definitely worth it. It may even wean them off Christopher Pike and R. L. Stine.

This is a great collection of mostly science fiction from the fifties with a few from earlier days. These stories were all previously published in the sci-fi magazines of the era and were curated together here with a theme of "monsters" and chosen as appropriate for young readers. I loved these Alfred Hitchcock collections as a kid and I'm pleased to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading this as an adult. The selection of authors contains a few famous names, and other lesser-known names but research shows they were all prolific short story writers. I really enjoyed the selection only finding one dud in the whole group and several very excellent ones.

1. The Day of the Dragon by Guy Endore (1934) - An apocalyptic tale of how an underappreciated professor brings about the apocalypse. He determines to experiment on alligator brains to improve their slothfulness and eventually succeeds but his experiments not only become lively they start to change, evolve as it were, until they become dragons, eventually mating, man-eating. The narrator, one of the last of the human race left living underground records the tale from the beginning for posterity's sake, in case the human race does survive, which he admits is not likely. Readable, but scientifically dated from the thirties. (3/5)

2. The King of the Cats by Stephan Vincent Benet (1929) - Wickedly delicious! I loved this! Rather like a fairy tale in some ways, but contemporary. A man is in love with a Siamese princess who is visiting New York but then a famed conductor comes to town whose claim to fame is that he has a tail. A bit of a mystery follows with the paranormal. Romantic gothic. Delightful. (5/5)

3. Slime by Joseph Payne Brennan (1953) - This was written five years before the cult hit movie "The Blob" but is basically the same thing. Here the slime is some sort of primordial beast from the sea who makes its way to land and starts absorbing living beings leading its way up to humans. As typical with '50s monster movies, the army is called in, well the Home Guard in this case, and they figure out its weakness and save the world. Typical of its genre. (3/5)

4. The Man Who Sold Rope to the Gnoles by Idris Seabright (1951) - Macabre little tale of a salesman who goes to a house inhabited by unknown creatures to sell his wares. It ends as one would expect. (3/5)

5. Henry Martindale, Great Dane by Miriam Allen deFord (1954) - My favourite story so far. A writer of short fiction wakes up one morning, with shades of Kafka, to find he has turned into a great dane. He and his wife wait a week to see if he'll change back but he doesn't and they determine he has the body of a dog, the instincts of the dog, but has retained his human eyes, human voice, and human brain. They pack up and move to the country where no one will know them. In this, I felt the most for the wife who was given little choice in the matter and I think the real monster here was not the dog the husband turned into but the husband's true self that never changed and held an unfortunate dominance over the woman until the (to me) tragic end. Of course, she had plenty of opportunities to change the outcome but never took any. A freaky story. (5/5)

6. The Microscopic Giants by Paul Ernst (1936) - A copper mining operation taking place in the depths of the earth for the war effort has the miners discovering fossilized tiny little feet. Until the footprints start to multiply and then a tiny person is seen and the two men in charge go to investigate. A great sci-fi story from this age, filled with pseudo-science but creepy nonetheless. (4/5)

7. The Young One by Jerome Bixby (1953) - I really liked this! A family moves to America from Hungary deciding it is time to give up the old ways and get by as humans in the New World which doesn't believe in their kind. Their young son knows he's different but doesn't know what he is yet, but after he befriends a local boy whose insatiable curiosity makes him play a trick on the young boy to learn his secret himself, he luckily keeps his life and makes the boy's parents decide it is time to tell their son the truth. Fun and unexpected turn of events. (5/5)

8. Doomsday Deferred by Will F. Jenkins (1949) - Really enjoyed this! A man goes to the Brazil jungle to find a rare butterfly and gets caught up in a horrifying insect invasion. A hive collective of army ants are controlling a lone family far out in the jungle but the entomologist realizes how close they are to gaining control of mankind. With his insect knowledge, he saves the day, South America and perhaps the world. Good old-fashioned apocalyptic fifties fiction. (5/5)

9. Shadow, Shadow on the Wall by Theodore Sturgeon (1950) - A vicious stepmother gets hers after she locks a boy in his room with all his toys removed while his dad is away on business. Creepy! (4/5)

10. The Desrick on Yandro by Manly Wade Wellman (1952) - This has to come in as my second favourite! A creepy story written like a Smoky Mountain legend. A guitar-playing hitch-hiker ends up taking a power-hungry, greedy rich man back to his grandfather's origins in the Smokies. Well-told. (5/5)

11. The Wheelbarrow Boy by Richard Parker (1953) - A strange little magical tale which seems to be bemoaning the loss of corporal punishment in the schools. I think (?) it may have been meant as satire at the time it was written. Doesn't hold up well. (2/5)

12. Homecoming by Ray Bradbury (1946) - I like this story, it's a fun family to imagine. Bradbury paints the characters vividly so we can see how wild this Hallowe'en homecoming party must be. But it is a sad story and even though mortal Timothy is assured by both his mother and a favourite Uncle that he is loved and will be even beyond death, I can't help but think that doesn't satisfy Timothy. I think Timothy wants them to tell him that if he dies they will use their powers to bring him back, and he is dejected by their assurances that he will have it better as a mortal. This story always leaves me feeling sad for Timothy. (4/5)

Real Loving, Straight from the Heart

A beautiful story of love at an age when most of us think that wouldn't happen to us. Beautiful love. I love how the characters in this story live from their hearts and close to the earth. They are not in any way pretentious. The live in a caring community of Quakers whose lives intertwine in a beautiful tapestry of caring and faith. This is a permanent book in my library which I have read several times and will read again and again.

Simply Inspiring

I read a condensed version of this wonderful book...3 times. I deeply appreciated the view into Quaker life with which I was previously unfamiliar, and which I found deeply soul-satisfying. This amazing love story is grounded in the values we can so easily lose sight of in our busy, overly stimulating modern world: simplicity, devotion, honesty, equality of people, and oneness with the land. Imagine marriage based on the desires of two people to cherish and serve each other. I look forward to reading the complete book because I don't want to miss even one detail. Enjoy!

I used to read the hell out of this book in junior high school and I just found it again recently, and the stories in here are pretty fantastic! recommended to fans of surreal, dark speculative fiction. Don't let the fact that it is geared towards adolescents through you off. It's pretty damn good.

The absolute favorite book of my childhood...

I am 30 years old, and I confess: I still adore this book! (In fact, I am desperately searching for a hardbound copy for my own!)
My mother had to read it to me (I fell in love with it, probably aged 5--the text was a bit beyond my abilities at that time), but it was the PICTURES that held me. I lived in every one of those illustrations, dreamed being in them quite vividly. They are WONDERFULLY quaint pencil drawings, heightened with orange (classic Halloween combo), delicately rendered.
The story praises uniqueness. But what I got out of it when I was little, was this great peek into what life would be like if I were a witch (which I wanted very badly when I was 5!) I want to be able to share this book with my future daughter, so hopefully I come across a copy!

The other witches in the witches' circle finally, grudgingly, accept that Littlest Witch is a "good witch."

Who can say they don't love a book that was part of their growing up. It took me a while to hunt this down but I have it now and it brings a smile to my face each time remembering how I buried myself in the library after school and going into a world all my own. It's awesome.

I'll Pass on this one

We love the Lyle books, but Lyle Finds His Mother takes a strange, cruel turn. For his own selfish reasons, Hector does something manipulative and mean, even for Hector. But what could be an opportunity for a lesson ends with a strange twist; everything turns out great because of what Hector did. There are no consequenses, he never admits what he did or apologizes, and nobody even finds out it was all a lie. It's an awful message for children, and I don't know what Waber was thinking with this one.

Good, Evil and Unexpected Outcomes

Hector P. Valenti, star of Stage and Screen, has fallen on hard times. This is because that most talented of crocodiles, Lyle, star of Valenti's show, has put his performing days behind him, now living an idyllic life on the Upper East Side in Manhattan with the beloved Primm family.

As his circumstances go from bad to worse Hector is driven to hatching a deceptive plot to lure Lyle back into the act. It works - for a time.

The Star of Stage and Screen (Hector) behaves in a manner that is manipulative and self serving, but ultimately is rewarded. Lyle is taken for a ride but greatly benefits before it's all over. Indeed in the end there's a happy and a beneficial outcome for one and all.

Some parents may be flustered by this apparent moral ambiguity. Will kids go off on a wrong track seeing Hector P. Valenti escape punishment for his sneaky plot?

I think not.

This adventure of our surreal reptilian shows that good outcomes sometimes do proceed from dishonorable intentions. The world is complex and kids do well with exposure to this nuance that they will eventually encounter in real life.

And reading this memorable tale they'll have some fun along the way.

Will Lyle Find His Mother?

Actually I liked the book. As Lyle is so happy to be with the Primms and NY. And does not want to leave there.As he is very popular with everybody from the kids to his family, Joseph and his wife, and son Joshua.

But when Hector P Valenti, the star of stage and screen that is very poor and living on hard times. As he notices Lyle with his family in the park. While walking and wondering what to do with his desperate situation. And thinks of a scheme to win him back into his old act at Vaudeville as both were a hit, it was Lyle more of a hit.

As Hector gives him a letter saying that he could find his birth mother. But the Primm family are not buying it. Telling him not to give it any thought. Though Lyle begins to think of his own mother. When he does, the family begins to help take his mind off of it. From working in the garden to going to Joshua's school to helping in Mrs Primm's campaign elections for a friend.

But as he thinks of his favorite food besides Turkish Caviar in Graham Crackers. He has to go and the family reluctantly agree as Hector "greets" him when he Lyle has a basket for his mother but takes it nonetheless. As his partner says they both most go on the road to raise money. But it is only for Hector's greed and using Lyle.

But as they get enough money and Lyle who does not let fame and fortune get in his way of finding his mom, puts his foot down when he discovers Hector not keeping his word. As Hector is only using the money for himself. But in a sense, Hector does or may feel a sense of guilt into tricking Lyle. Agrees to do so.

There they travel finally to find his mother. Will Lyle ever find his mother? Will the Primm family see Lyle again? Will Hector really this time stay true to his word? I know one reviewer didn't like it. But still, Hector you had to feel bad for his situation that he was in. As that is unlike him though he does act pretty selfish throughout a few of the books he is in. But he is nonetheless a good guy at heart.

Review of the 1964 and 1967 editions

"Modern Introductory Analysis" was published in four different versions:

1. Teacher's Manual ("Teacher's Edition" is printed on the spine) - This has a separate teacher's manual (usually on green paper) at the beginning of the book along with teacher notes throughout the rest of the student text. In particular, short answers are provided as dialog to the pedagogical (Why?), which is encountered continuously in the student text. Answers to exercises are in the back of the book.
2. Student Version ("With Odd-Numbered Answers" is printed on the spine) - Answers to odd-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.
3. Student Version ("With Answers" is printed on the spine) - Answers to odd and even-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.
4. Student Version (no additional annotation on the spine) - No answers to exercises.

However, those answers in the back exclude both graphs and proofs. If you desire answers for graphs and proofs, they are included in a separate publication, viz., "Solution Key for Modern Introductory Analysis." Nota bene: the "1980 Impression" (reprint) of the Solution Key, ISBN: 0395255554, is compatible with the 1964 and 1967 editions of the text.

Though its title may suggest otherwise, "Modern Introductory Analysis" does not concern itself with epsilon-delta calculus proofs. Rather, it is a kind of pre-calculus text originally intended for high school seniors who had completed a course in Algebra II and Trigonometry in the previous year. It was the follow-on book to Dolciani's "Modern Algebra and Trigonometry Structure and Method Book 2." There is substantial overlap in the topics of these two books, although "Modern Introductory Analysis" covers them at a higher level. Other topics in "Modern Introductory Analysis" are new material, for example, mathematical induction, vectors, limits, derivatives, transformations and polar coordinates. There are > 4400 exercises. Most of the exercise sets contain at least a handful of proofs to whet your appetite. Considerable added insight is gained by doing these proofs, which serve to extend the basic material. The presentation is axiomatic. Yet, you will find a fair amount of intuitive development preceding the theorems. Some of the theorems are stated without proof, either left as exercises, or with a citation (in the Teacher's Manual) to another book containing a proof.

The 1964 and 1967 editions of the book are nearly identical. The 1964 ed. has several easy-to-spot errors that are fixed in the 1967 ed. However, be advised of certain less obvious errata in the 1964 ed. You may wish to revise your 1964 ed. as follows:

1) Exercise 36, P. 182, "T - S and P - S" should read "T - P and S - P"
2) Exercise 11, P. 312, "the length" should read "a function whose minimum is the length"
3) Exercise 12, P. 312, "what is" should read "let L be" and "(-2, 5)?" should read "(-2, 5). Find a function whose minimum is L."
4) Exercise 13, P. 312, "which for a fixed volume requires the least material (surface area)" should read "of greatest volume having a total surface area of 96π sq. cm."
5) Exercise 18, P. 313, should read "Solve Exercise 17 if triangle POQ has minimum area."
6) Exercise 34, P. 327, "b = 1" should read "b ≠ 1"
7) Exercise 14, P. 362, "log 2 (base e)" should read "log 4 (base e)"
8) Exercise 23, P. 362, "b = √a " should read "b = a² "
9) Exercise 24, P. 362, "b = ³√a " should read "b = a³ "

Great Series

This text, along with all the Dolciani books by Houghton Mifflin were the corner stones of any high school math program in the 60's-70's and early 80's. This book particularly was the book that I learned pre-calculus from, and made me become a math major. The books were literate in their context, never watered down, but not so abstract that a high school student couldn't read and follow. What makes this book so unique is the fact that mathematical induction is introduced in Chapter 3 and is carried throughout the book. No other precalculus book prior or since has used this approach. Mathematical induction is a proof driven treatment for the topics which follow. It makes the students think in a logical manner and enables them, by proof, to understand the full argument of why certain "things happen" in math as they do. The Teacher's Edition's were the best of any series (until Houghton Mifflin changed the format, and made them less teacher friendly). I still have 2 TE's of this book and the solutions key, and still refer to it when I need to...it beats any precalculus book out today. Once Dr. Dociani passed away, the entire Houghton Mifflin series went down the tubes, their current texts DO NOT hold muster to this old classic!!!
