Full meal saga

Julian May always fills the books with details. A readers interest continues throughout. Recent multiple volume books from recent authors are less capable of Providing continuous substance. We can leave a character or group for a bit and return without losing the pattern. The reader may wish to take a short break, to digest a bit, rest, but will return. I plan to continue this series until the final chapter.

Shame on publisher!

I hate giving this book 1 star, because it deserves 5. Heck, it deserves 10. The book is a classic.

But, the incredible number of spelling (most egregious of which is "tore" over and over again for "torc") and punctuation errors (many periods are absent) make it painful to read. Obviously the publisher just automated the process of character recognition, then gave the result to Amazon to feel WITHOUT A SINGLE MINUTE OF QUALITY CONTROL. If a human being had spend a single minute looking at this book, they would have realized how many errors it had.

Thank you, Julian May, for writing an excellent book.

Shame on you, publishers, for having no quality control whatsoever.

Worst editing I've ever seen in a mass-market publication

I have been eagerly awaiting this series in Kindle format and now that I've got it I wish the publisher had waited a little longer and gotten the job done right. Typographical problems like "96 THE NONBORN KING" appearing in the middle of a paragraph, bad hyphenations, and mis-spellings are ruining the experience of an otherwise very enjoyable series of books. I read these in the mass-market paperback editions back in the 80's and there was nothing like this in those editions.

I hate to give this one star when the story, including all the books in the series, deserves a 4 or 5, but Amazon really needs to step up here. These typos and mis-spellings are present in the first two books of this series, The Many Colored Land and The Golden Torc, as well. Unfortunately "torc" is mis-spelled as "tore" more often than not inside the books.

Wonderful book, springboard for a lot of interesting discussions...

This is a sweet story about how a little girl gets a new coat during the difficult years after World War II. Her resourceful mother must trade some of her treasures to get the wool, the spinning, the weaving, and the sewing done for Anna's new coat.

My daughter belongs to a FIAR (Five in a Row by Jane Claire Lambert) co-op of six 1st-2nd girls this year, and I hosted the co-op for this book. This book is featured in FIAR Volume 2, and the book has plenty of ideas for activities and discussions.

Using the FIAR book as a springboard, this is what we discussed/did:

1. WWII and how devastating it was. How difficult the aftermath of war is for ordinary people, no matter which side of the war they are on. Interestingly, we are not told where Anna and her mother live.

2. Sacrifice, how Anna's mother gave up her special treasures so that Anna would be warm, comfortable, and healthy in the winter with her new coat.

3. Sheep, how important they are to farmers in many countries because they provide milk, sheepskin, meat, and wool. Also discussed shearing. Activity: Made a spring sheep picture with a template I found on the Internet and cotton balls.

4. Measurement, metric versus U.S. Customary Unit. Activity: Measured items of their choosing in both US and metric units, and filled out a chart.

5. Dyes, how roots, nuts, and flowers were used for thousands of years to add color to clothing and make paints. Activity: Tie Dye tee shirts.

6. Bartering, its history, the problems with bartering and why it was generally replaced by money, but how Anna's mother was able to barter when she had no money.

7. Weaving, its history, some vocabulary, types of looms. Activity: Weaving on small looms I made out of foamcore. The kids wove with yarn, strips of fabric, and beads.

8. Vocabulary - clothesline, war, shear, porcelain, card, ligonberries, garnet, and weave.

This book is VERY similar to the book, "Pelle's New Suit" by Elsa Beskow, published in the 1920s, even down to the thanking of the lambs at the end! That book is also worth hunting down, the illustrations are just lovely. It could be a nice project to compare and contrast the two stories.

Terrific Post-War Upbeat Book

This book is a classic, and was taped by Barbara Bush as part of the Presidential Literacy Project. It begins in a post-war environment, where no one has any money. The story is not only about how a coat is made, but also about how Anna's mother trades her posessions for wool and the services of the spinner, weaver, and tailor in order to make the coat. It culminates at a Christmas party, where all of the people who helped to make the coat are invited to Anna's house, and she even goes back to thank the sheep. The illustrations are well done, and the repetitive text makes it a story that is appropriate for children from 3yrs.(my son's age) to second graders which I have taught.

I read this book in my third grade reading class. The best part was when Anna fed the sheep apples and gave them paper necklaces. It was sad because they didn't have enough money to buy her a new coat.

PreSchool-Grade 1 After a hiatus exceeding some 25 years, Spot, the main character in Put Me in the Zoo (Random, 1960) reappears. Spot is not happy with himself, and he magically transforms himself into an elephant, a giraffe, and finally a mouse. It takes the girl and the boy whom Spot first met when he wanted to be in the zoo to convince Spot that they like him best when he is being himself. Although the familiar trademarks of this series, brightly colored illustrations and simple rhyming sentences, remain unchanged, the book has several flaws. The theme of self acceptance is quite admirable, but when Spot appears as an elephant, his friends point out that he's too fat, as a giraffe he is too tall, and as a mouse too small. Those children who see themselves in the above descriptions might actually be getting the reverse message from what the story is trying to convey. Flawed message

I love Put Me In The Zoo, so I picked this up used without really reading it through. Well, it's a dollar I'm never getting back...!

Spot, who is better off in the circus than the zoo (seriously, read the original, because it rocks) is bored with being himself, so he decides to play around and change shapes. Will he be an elephant? A giraffe? A mouse?

We already know the ending - he's going to find out that his own shape is best. The only thing now is to find out WHY his own shape is best.

Well, it's not best because he can do things in that shape, or because other people are familiar with it, or because it's just a nice shape to be in, or even because he has opposable thumbs. It's best because elephants are too fat to go on see-saws, because birds nest in giraffe's ears (???) and because people put out traps to catch mice. Oh, and because his juvenile friends are judgmental brats who don't love their friend for who he is and support him in this crisis but tell him "We don't like you like that" every time.

Sheesh. I'm not sure if I even want to give this one away, but I guess it'll be less of a pain in a full classroom of books where each kid reads it about once or twice instead of over and over again.

Conflicting views...

I have a mixed opinion about this book. Spot, the main character, isn't happy with himself and so transforms himself into different animals: an elephant, a giraffe, and a mouse, but finally his friends convince him that they like him much more when he is himself.

I like the final message of the story: like yourself for who you are, but I don't really care for the way in which this message is conveyed. It's not that Spot discovers that he doesn't need to change to please others or himself, but on the contrary he finds that his friends are very judging about his new shapes: they don't like the elephant cause he's fat, the giraffe is too tall and the mouse is too small.

Children can be very harsh with their opinions without introducing a book that encourages this. As I said, the final message is great, but I think there are better ways of getting there.

However, my son likes this book. It's not his favorite but he does pick it up once in a while. He's 3y.o. and especially likes saying along with me the magic words "one, two, three, now look and tell me what you see" as Spot transforms himself each time.

Truthfully, however, I don't recommend it. There are better children books out there. On a similar subject I prefer for example "Happy birthday to you!" by Dr. Seuss, which celebrates the fact of being oneself "I am what I am! That's a great thing to be! If I say so myself, happy birthday to me!"

Terrible use of words

I purchased this book upon the recommendation of a preschool curriculum I was interested in for homeschooling. The overall idea of the book is great...be happy with yourself the way you are made. However, it uses the phrases, "We don't like you fat. We like you thin." This quote is from the children trying to convince the suess character that he shouldn't be an elephant and that he should stay what he is (whatever that is). I just felt uncomfortable reading this. I don't want my children to look at someone that is overweight and EVER think or say that they don't like them because they are fat!

If you don't like to see guns pop up unexpectedly in children's books then don't buy this one. I was thoroughly disappointed to see a gun come into play towards the end of what was, until that point, a nice story.

Where is the sun? Who "wakes" it up?!

Large text with delightful watercolor illustrations make this book very appealing to young readers. Dog is woken up in the middle of the night by a flea biting his ear. He thinks it must be time to get up so goes to find pig but where is the sun? Each time they search somewhere for the sun and go wake up another animal until the entire farm is awake!

Hearing the noise, the farmer thinks that there is a fox in the hen house so naturally shoots his gun out the window to scare it off. There is NOTHING scary about the gun. This is a natural reaction when living on a farm and you are trying to protect your livestock.

When the sun appears who do the animals think has woken it up? A lovely ending to this great farm story.

Kids love animal sounds!

Wake Up, Sun! is another early reader book we explored recently to hone my six-year-old son's reading skills. Like My Loose Tooth, our copy is an older version that's labeled "Step 1," while newer editions have the label "Step 2." Of course, it's also published by Random House. I'm curious as to why they changed their level system.

The story follows the adventures of four barnyard animals as they search for the sun early one morning. Dog, Pig, Cow, and Chicken cannot figure out why the sun hasn't awakened, and try to make as much noise as possible to wake up the sun. It is common knowledge that children are fascinated by animal sounds, and the narrative in this book includes each character's unique call. This guarantees young readers will find this little story exceptionally appealing. When you are deciphering words like "oink" and "moo," it's pretty difficult to keep a straight face.

The watercolor illustrations make for adorable characterizations. The text is large and clear, and the story is perfectly appropriate for preschoolers. Depending on your child's maturity level, it may be a bit juvenile for first graders, however. The strange thing is that Amazon lists it's intended age group as baby to preschool, but it's a Stage 2 book. I doubt many babies are reading at a Stage 2 level. Maybe this would be a good book for an older sibling to read aloud to a younger brother or sister.

A great favorite

This is one of my all-time favorite children's books. I own a hardcopy and a paperback, and have read it several times over the years.
It's the story of a mother and daughter living alone together. The mother finds a hairy boyfriend that the daughter nicknames "The Wolfman." The story progresses as The Wolfman becomes more and more a part of their lives, until he finally moves in. This book is one of the earliest children's books to deal with a single mother and a live-in boyfriend. But the story is handled gracefully, and the child is fully accepting of the situation. If anything, the awkwardness of the adults makes the child want to make them more comfortable with the situation.
I highly recommend for either children, or for adult light (very light) reading.

Story a bit dated but enjoyable

This is not a great book but still a good one. Though dated in many respects (Brett's mom isn't like others partly because she wears blue jeans all the time, kids are confused by the fact that Brett doesn't know her father), it still has some modern relevance. You have to respect Brett's mom, Deborah, for her independence, accepting the idea of marriage only on her own terms rather than because that's what's expected of her. Conversely, though, there's empathy for the other mother character in the book, who's desperate to get a husband and despairing when she doesn't.

Insipid tale through the eyes of a fatherless girl

I just could not enjoy this book. The story is extremely dull, there is no depth to either the plot or characters, and nothing much happens. The text is so repetitive I found myself wanting to skip ahead in a book containing only 156 pages.

"Mom The Wolf Man and Me" is the story of 11 year old Brett Levin and her single mother. Brett's mom never married and never wanted to which suits Brett just fine. Suddenly, Theo (or Wolf Man as Brett calls him) comes into their lives and everything changes. The story unfolds in a very formulaic way and at the same time manages to go nowhere. You feel nothing for any of these two dimensional characters and there just isn't any conflict. The only parts of the book I enjoyed were Brett's interactions with her grandfather. While their relationship was sweet, it did not make up for the story overall.

Brett is probably the most apathetic, bland, and uninteresting character I have ever had the misfortune of reading about. Nothing seems to bother her much. Norma Klein takes the typical child-resents-new-man-in-mother's-life story makes the child as dull and agreeable as possible. After the entire book carefully builds up Brett's opposition to marriage and her aversion to change, she is upset about her mother's marriage and having to move for all of a page and a half, I kid you not (I counted). Of the marriage Brett says, "The day before the wedding Mom suddenly began acting funny. By now I'd gotten used to the idea of the whole thing. I mean, if you can't do anything about it, it's silly to make a big fuss." Gee whiz, I would have thought she'd be more upset, especially considering the chapters spent discussing how much she hated moving across the same town, much less out of state.

Decades ago makeup-less women in pants, intentional pill overdoses, women marching in Washington, men baking, and babies born out of wedlock MIGHT have made this an interesting read. It's just that once the "shock" of these things is gone, there isn't much left to the story.

Leaves the serious Mansfield fan still wanting to know more!

Martha Saxton does a fairly good job for a simple basic chronological biography on Jayne. Saxton sticks to the point in the picture she has painted of Jayne. From Jayne's simple basic middle class upbringing to her zealous tinsel-town lifestyle once star struck in Hollywood. Many details of Jayne's personality and behavior I feel were left out or just indeed forgotten. My only argument is the argument many have had on the real fact whether Mansfield was really literally decapitated. Terrible rumors have flown around over the years that her head even ended up in the backseat of the car! The book said she was decapitated, however I have actually seen the death picture and the head was still attached from what I could tell. The ending of the book provided rather interesting information though about the settlement of the estate. Many of the more serious fans or collectors though may still be left somewhat hungry after reading this book. However I would still recommend reading it for those wanting to know whatever they can possibly find out about Mansfield as she was indeed a true Hollywood legend.

Martha Saxton points out that unlike Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield could speak three languages and showed real acting talent!

You would not ordinarily expect Jayne Mansfield to be held up as a feminist model, but that's what Martha Saxton does in this unusual book.

Martha takes the view that Jayne was a cluster of paradoxes - very intelligent yet "played dumb," very down-to-earth yet adaptive to an extreme degree of glamour, very ambitious yet reticent in a strange way.

I learned a lot about who we were in the American 50s because of this book, and enjoyed the ride - except for the very end of Jayne's life in the tragic auto accident.

About the Author
Mary Soames, born in 1922, is the youngest and only surviving child of Winston and Clementine Churchill. During World War II she served in mixed antiaircraft batteries in England and northwestern Europe and accompanied her father as an aide on several wartime overseas journeys. In 1947 she married Captain Christopher Soames, later Lord Soames, the politician and diplomat, a vice president of the European Commission and the last governor of Southern Rhodesia. He died in 1987; they had five children. She is the author of Clementine Churchill: The Biography of a Marriage, which won the Wolfson Prize for history, A Churchill Family Album, The Profligate Duke, and Winston Churchill: His Life as a Painter.

What an amazing woman! I've read so much about Winston; it was interesting to be on the other side of him and Clementine was a delight - a strong woman in her own right. I enjoyed the book thoroughly and if you like reading about strong women (not bossy women) but strong self-sufficient women you will enjoy this book as well. And if you love Winston Churchill you will love this book doubly.

I'm sorry I can't personally review Clementine Churchill''s Biography of a Marriage because it was a gift to mu sister on er 80th birth day. I was so tempted to open the package after it arrived at my house but I had to mail it to her immediately.. Thank you so much for speedy delivery. She received it on time - in Finlad . Double Dare

Peer pressure is the definition of this book. A bully, Too Tall Grizzly dares Brother to steal from a close neighbor. Brother doesn't want to be a chicken - so he does it anyway and is caught. The neighbor gives Brother great advice that he carries with him and is helpful in his next encounter.

Dares, Double-Dares, Dee-Double-Dares

This is a good book about peer pressure. My 5 year-old son enjoyed the story. Some of the life lessons we talked about while reading this story are 1) thinking for yourself, 2) friends don't call friends names, and 3) never take something that does not belong to you.
I especially liked how Farmer Ben taught Brother Bear to not allow being called names (i.e. chicken) to cause him to be misled. Farmer Ben also used a story about sheep to teach a good lesson about the importance of thinking for yourself.
Brother Bear uses the lessons learned from Farmer Ben while handling his next encounter with the Too-Tall Gang (yet another double dare). This time he is not misled because he thinks for himself, sticks with what he knows is right, and says no.

Fascinating read

I borrowed this book from my local library and loved it so much I had to buy one for my son's 6th grade class (who are studying colonial America) and one for home. It is a wonderful history centered around food in colonial America together with authentic but updated recipes of food by region. I often cook with the students in my children's school and we will be using this book as our "textbook" this year.

A Readable History of Foods from Colonial Times

What I've always enjoyed about Lila Perl is that her work, while geared toward a young audience, I find is actually written for all age groups. This is one of three books I own written by Ms. Perl. My public library, which is an extensive library system, does not have most of her writings, so I plan to buy Ms. Perl's historical books where I can.

This, in particular, is my most favorite of the books I've purchased thus far. "Slumps, Grunts, and Snickerdoodles ..." is a fascinating account of the history behind the traditional foods of the colonies. It provides information on how Pilgrims and other settlers adapted the crops, which the Indians (or "tribes") taught them to cultivate - especially corn and beans, and recipes to provide the basis of many genuine "American" dishes as we know them today; e.g., Boston brown bread, hush puppies, fish fried in cornmeal, cornbread, succotash, etc. It also provides a brief history on some of the settlements, e.g., why the settlement of Jamestown initially failed, the development of tobacco as a huge cash crop for the South, etc.

I cannot recommend historical books written by Lila Perl highly enough. FYI, if you enjoyed this book, you should also read "Hunter's Stew and Hangertown Fry: What Pioneer Americans Ate and Why." Did you know eggs cost 50 cents each (that's $6.00 a carton) in the days of the Gold Rush?

Easy but interesting read

I used this book in a class project I was doing, where I prepared a few colonial recipes. The recipes were easy to make and the book provided great historical insight into the lives of colonials.
