Legitimacy, and the intricacies of politics and diplomacy...

I think that this book is a classic, because its historical analysis on the problems of peace after a revolutionary period is truly insightful, and contains valuable lessons that are still very important nowadays.

Kissinger allows us to understand the difficulties inherent to finding a new legitimacy, accepted by all. He also delves into the best ways to solve the disputes that often arise in coalitions that include actors whose interests differ a lot. His comments were specifically about the Quadruple Alliance (Great Britain, Austria, Prusia and Russia) but can be applied to many other cases.

I specially liked how he dissected the personalites of the actors in this play, Napoleon, Metternich,Castlereagh and Talleyrand, and the manner in which he highlights that those personalities influenced the course of history.

This is an important period, because as the title of the book claims, a world was restaured. The Concert of Europe began and a new era of peace started, thanks to the perspicacy of Metternich and after the instability caused by the napoleonic wars. In this book we get to know a little more of Kissinger as an historian but also as a diplomat, as he shows us the intricacies of politics and diplomacy.

Even if this book is sometimes a little slow, I give it my highest recommendation, because it leaves you with much more knowledge, not only about this period but also regarding political realism.

Timeless wisdom at all levels from a master of diplomacy

Henry Kissinger, who wrote the essence of this book as a graduate student at Harvard, encapsulates his version of diplomatic lessons in this timeless masterpiece. Whether you are dealing with Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin or a tyrannical boss at work, this work contains insights which transcend the period of study. In picking an obsure historical period, the time around and after the Napoleonic wars at the beginning of the 18th century in Europe, Kissinger runs the risk of seeming irrelevant to the modern (or post-modern) sensibility. Even a cursory review of the book will disprove this. Kissenger basically discusses the problems and politics of building a coalition, proving a tyrant to be a tyrant, and finally how to construct a practical enduring peace. His writing is insightful, full of preternatural wisdom and of enduring value. The lessons transcend a time period, but also transcend an historical scale: they apply to a variety of coalitions at the national and individual level. I recommend the book whole-heartedly. You will come away with a deep understanding of politics at all levels and also why Kissinger dominated the diplomacy of his period.

A funny thing happened on the way to doggy discipline school

When Snoopy's antics get a little out of hand and all the neighborhood kids start demanding that Charlie Brown do something to control his dog, America's favorite cartoon canine finds himself facing the awful fate of discipline training back at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. Suitcase in hand (and dog dish on head), a very unhappy and slightly scared Snoopy sets out on his way. It's too far to go in one day, though, so Charlie Brown has made arrangements for Snoopy to spend the night at Peppermint Patty's house. As you all remember, Peppermint Patty has never really figured out that Snoopy is actually a dog and not just a weird kid with great baseball skills. His one-night stay turns into a three-day vacation, with Peppermint patty waiting on him hand and foot (or paw and paw, as the case may be). That isn't what Charlie Brown had in mind at all. Will Snoopy face the indignity of being put on a leash? Will he ever learn his lesson?

This is a short but very cute book of full-page color animations featuring Snoopy at his best. Originally published in 1968, it's a great book to have in your private Peanuts collection. And no - you can't have my copy.

How did they fit all those rocks between two covers?

Most of the rock-and-mineral books I see are full of colorful pictures of exotic minerals, underground caves or far-away mountains. This is the first book I've come across that actually takes you to those places. The simple, clever mirror device pops those rocks right into your lap, or brings the mountain up close.
The information is accurate and well-written. Full color spreads illustrate the location or object and the photography is breathtaking. This is one you'll want to find space for, on that "oversized" book shelf, to accomodate the height of the book.

Beutiful pictures with detailed captions. It shows igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks. It tells which rocks we use in our everyday life. Overall it is pretty good. I like the part were they tell the uses of flint.

I ENJOY THIS ONE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THE KIDS DO TOO

This is not a bad beginning reader and it is full of very fascintating information about sharks and shark life. The illustrations are quite good and of course hold the children's interest from cover to cover. The text is simple and quite easy to follow and understand. I can see why there might be some concerns over portions of the book. Yes, the book dose address the fact that sharks, for the most part, are preditors and I can see why the illustrations might upset some (although I feel it will probably the adults rather than the children who will be upset. Kids are so pragmatic these days about such things). I also have to agree to parts of the one negative review this book received in that I too felt the author was being a bit cavalier as to the probability of the survival of sharks all over the world. As the reviewer pointed out, this is one animal that is quickly getting into trouble in a big way. Perhaps I would have liked to have seen a bit more on the necessity of keeping these wonderful creatures with us. Overall though, I find the book to be quite useful and as I pointed out, the kids all love it.

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

The reviews on this book are remarkably accurate. This is not a childrens' book. Even though decades have passed since it was first published, no other text has been able to bump it off a 'best in class' position. If you want to look to the sky for familiar shapes, this is the book for you.

There are a couple of fundamental ways to study the heavens. A 'modern' approach might be to put your head down, click in a few celestial coordiantes, and wait for the telescope to find a target for you. However a more interesing approach would be to find shape in the sky and locate targets manually. To do that you need to recognize those old landmarks in the sky, the constellations.

The big problem in identifying constellations is to find shape from seemingly random dots. Ray creatively used the same stars, but made 'new' stick diagrams that actually look like what they are supposed to represent. This makes a constellation much easier to visualize, remember, and recognize later. Other texts that attempt this effort fall short because they don't emphasize visual recognition clues.

A major fault of modern texts is the inclusion of unnecessary detail. Ray puts in a few choice details that help the memory and add interesting character to the figures in the sky. But by excluding minutia he draws the reader back to the goal at hand. Ultimately you need to memorize a blueprint of the sky, and this workbook will be your best friend to help reach that goal. Bravo.

A Guide to the Stars Simple Enough for Curious George but Sophisticated Enough for You!

The best introductory guide to the stars and constellations, bar none! It has numerous features which makes learning the constellations much easier and more fun. Here are a few examples:

(1) H.A. Rey has done a great service by redrawing the constellations (using the same stars) so that they *actually* look like the figure they represent. This is in contrast to so many other constellation drawings (by others) that bear no resemblance at all to the figure they supposedly represent. They come in two varieties: either they are lifelike representations with no correlation at all between the figure and the individual stars or they are stick figures that look more like abstract art!

(2) Rather than deluging you with lots of irrelevant facts, H.A. Rey has chosen some very pertinent, interesting facts and anecdotes to share about the stars and the constellations. These are the kind of facts that are fun to share with others when you introduce them to the constellations!

(3) H.A. Rey has very wisely left the more detailed and technical explanations for discussion later in the book. He starts off by telling you just the basics that you need to start stargazing right away!

(4) On the Calendar Chart pages you will see two star charts on facing pages. On the left you'll see just the stars and on the right you'll see the stars with the connecting lines to show the constellations. Going back and forth between the pages is a great way to start to memorize the celestial patterns so that when you get outside it will be easier to pick them out!

The Ultimate Guide to the Constellations

If you've ever wanted to REALLY learn the constellations, this is the best book ever written to do just that. Rey's style of depicting the characters up in the night sky as stick figures makes them very easy to find, learn, and remember for both children and adults. Rey uses the English translation of the constellation names, making them even more user-friendly (though he also gives their classical names, as well).

Other methods use only the brightest stars contained within the constellation and draw lines between them to form odd-shaped geometric figures which don't really have anything to do with their namesake. For example: Hercules, using the Rey method, looks like a stick-figure man running and brandishing a club. The geometric style shows a box with lines radiating out, away from it, sort of like a childish pinwheel. Believe it or not, there are some people who are actually devoted to this non-sensical method of showing constellations(!) and hate the Rey system because it's not the way *they* learned them.

Rey's book also contains a wealth of other, more technical, information about our solar system, how the Earth's sky has its own mapping grid (similar to the Earth's lines of latitude and longitude), and there are even easy-to-use tables for finding the visible planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) at any time of the year for the next ten years.

As a child, I tried to learn the constellations from books and charts that used the geometric style, and after a few tries, gave up. The names meant nothing to me, and the shapes were dull and made no sense. Then I got hold of "The Stars: A New Way To See Them," by H.A. Rey, and within 6 months I found and memorized more than half of the constellations visible from light-polluted San Jose.

Detractors say learning Rey's constellations will make learning the "standard" or "conventional" (i.e. "dull" or "nonsensical") constellations more difficult. Pure poppycock. I have had zero problem with this, and can use both methods as easily as you might interpret a stop sign using the word "stop," or one using the international "no" symbol over an upraised palm. There's a huge advantage to learning Rey's method, in that you can use it to get people interested in astronomy much more easily!

I'm into amateur astronomy, now, heavily involved with volunteer work at the local observatory. It's the highlight of my night to be able to hear children say, "I can see it! I can see it!" when I point out a constellation to them, and show it to them in Rey's book. Who knows? Maybe I've started something for those kids...

These are great books for children learning to read and for children who don't like to read "long: books. Also these books have a ton of information in them that keep my children interested on reading to the next page. I find that my children will read these books over and over again.

Short, Concise, Informative

William Shirer, perhaps most famous for his comprehensive history, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, or his live radio broadcasts from Berlin during the early days of World War II, has also written a thin little book titled, The Rise and Fall of Adlof Hitler. Although the work is geared towards a younger audience, the quality of writing, and information contained are quality fare for an older audience as well.
Shirer, begins his work with a young disgruntled Hitler, arguing with his father over his chosen profession, that of an artist. Shirer then chronicles Hitler's days as a vagabond, moving from one odd job to another across Austria and Germany. In these early years, we see Hitler not as a maniacal demagogue, but as an eccentric wanderer, searching for nothing in particular. However, World War I brought the demagogue forth.
After serving for four years in the Germany military, Hitler, disgruntled with the Treaty of Versailles and the weakness of the German nation decides to enter into political life. It is in a small beer hall that Hitler creates the new found Nazi party and enlists the help of such infamous men as Goering, Himmler, and Hess. Do to Hitler's exceptional charisma, the Nazi party begins to grow.
Following the now infamous "Beer Hall Putsch," Hitler is imprisoned and begins work on his seminal book, Mein Kampf. Following his release, the book sells millions of copies and Hitler is thrust upon the national stage. From here, Shirer illustrates Hitler's rise of Chancellor, and ultimately dictator of Germany. He discusses the serious of invasions and coups conducted under Hitler throughout Europe and subsequent intervention of the Allied Powers.
Finally, Shirer chronicles the decline of Hitler, and his subsequent decent in to madness. His paranoia, greed, and ultimate refusal of accept anything other than total victory led to not only the demise of Adlof Hitler, but also to the German nation.
Shirer did an excellent job chronicling the life of Adlof Hitler in a short and concise book. This would severe as an excellent text for a high school history course, or for any reader who wants to learn more about Hitler, but has very little time

My first "Young Adult" book - and a great one.

I agree with some of the other reviewers: this is an excellent first book for a young person to learn about history. In his memoir "A Native's Return", Shirer says he was asked by Random House's Bennett Cerf to write a child's biography of Adolf Hitler (for ages ten to fourteen).

"How did you write for young people?", he wondered. "You couldn't be condescending. You had to respect them. But you had to keep it simple enough for them to understand". It took his looking at young adult books by John Gunther and Pearl Buck to break his writer's block.

Two years before his death I wrote to him, saying that - he succeeded. And I still have the short thank-you letter he sent to me.

An Excellent Introduction for Kids to History, and Evil

I read this little book when I was in fourth or fifth grade, was knocked out, and have been hooked on history ever since. Shirer condenses his massive "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" for younger readers. It's a gripping introduction to a subject you could spend your whole reading life exploring. It has the "fascination of abomination"; a first, cautionary introduction for kids to the scary things that happen in the adult world. If you want your children to grow up to be interested in politics, history, law, etc., this is a good book to give them.

Good introduction to this troubled and strategic land

What is historically known as the "Land of Canaan" has been, and still is, one of the main crossroads of human History, Religion, and Philosophy. Asimov tells us the complex yet fascinating story, from the first known human traces, found in Jerico circa 7,800 BC, until the total control of the Roman Empire, in 135 AD. We read the stories of the Cananeans, Phillistines, Arameans, Hebrews, Jews, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, etc., and the successive dominations of Egyptians, Hicsians, Assyrians, Caldeans, Persians, Greeks and Romans. It is written with the trademarks of Asimov's history: fast pace, sense of humor, precision, anlysis and criticism.
Although later discoveries, very important in the last decades, may have modified or slightly altered some of Asimov's hypotheses or data, I think it is a wonderful introduction to more serious and specializaed study of this crucial region of the world. For non-specialists, particularly, it is a good book, since the writing is easy and the tone is non-academic. Recommended.

In an introduction by the eminent psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, parents are assured that picture books help little children to make sense of reality. He praises Lionni's "images which in one visual experience convey more than can be said in 1000 words." This is a collection of the artist's famous works, first published as individual titles. Each economic, easily grasped tale is richly illustrated by the artist's color paintings and collages, emphasizing the meaning in the actions of the mouse Frederick and other lovable creatures. There are 13 stories, with variations on Lionni's central theme: the importance of gaining wisdom and of being, always, one's self without forgetting that everyone is part of society and responsible (like clever Swimmy, star of his own film) to all others.

About the Author
Leo Lionni wrote and illustrated more than 40 picture books, including four Caldecott Honor Books. He died in 1999 at the age of 89.

Disappointed

I knew I really liked some of Leo Lionni's stories for children, so I checked out this book since it's a collection of 13 of his stories. I was somewhat disappointed for two reasons. First, it does not have all the pictures from the individual books. You definitely lose out because the pictures are so delightful and often important to the story.

Secondly, I find I just can't recommend all the stories. I love "Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse" and "A Color of His Own" for being warm and fun and conveying excellent life lessons like unselfishness, appreciation for who you are, and friendship. I like "Swimmy", "Fish is Fish" and a few others. But many other stories weren't quite as good, had abrupt endings, or would be harder for children to understand. A couple of them seemed to have messages I just couldn't endorse. Christian parents and teachers may find "In the Rabbitgarden" alarming because it seems like a retelling of the Garden of Eden, but has a very different outcome and opposite moral.

I'd recommend buying individual books of the Lionni stories you know you like.

My Aunt and Uncle bought me this book when I was little and it is probably my favorite children's book. The stories are wonderful and it's something that as a child I loved and as an adult I still enjoy. I think the messages in this book are wonderful.
