Im Grandma, there is no Grandpa in my life and I got this thinking it would be about ME. =) lol this is a nice book with a fun story about staying with the Grandparents for the first time but it is about both Grandma and Grandpa so the title is a bit misleading I think. Love Berenstain Bears.

an all-time childhood favorite

This is a Berenstain Bears classic, and one I will always treasure. Some of my greatest childhood memories were days I spent with my grandparents, and all the strange and wonderful things we learned and discovered together.
It is not always easy for kids to leave their parents for days at a time, but this book is a wonderful story that helps kids to overcome their fears of spending time away (a similiar theme is developed in "The Berenstain Bears Go To Camp.").
The story is fun for kids and adults alike, and families can relate well to it. Additionally, the illustrations are colorful and engaging.
...this is not necessarily a book for first time readers, but early readers, and there are other Berenstain Bears books with easier words. This a great one for kids who have been reading for some time and otherwise works as a great story to read aloud to your kids.
Highly recommended as a cornerstone to any children's library or Berenstain Bears collection.

A Good Read Aloud Book for Parents of Young Kids

All of my children enjoyed this book, and the message, of spending a week at Grandma's (the prospect of which has Brother and Sister Bear somewhat anxious), and the "old folks" turning out to be livewires and loads of fun, is a great one. The text (and amount of it per page) is probably a little much for beginning readers. The illustrations, like all Berenstain Bears Books, are charming, especially those depicting a honeymooning Mother and Father Bear as thinner and active (so that the kid bears don't recognize them!). Overall, a solid book that kids will enjoy and parents won't mind reading repeatedly.

Bill Peet was the author of 34 books published by Houghton Mifflin. One of these, BILL PEET: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, was named a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book. All of Bill Peet’s books published by Houghton Mifflin Company, including his first book for children published in 1959, HUBERT'S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, remain actively in print today.

In both his career as an author and illustrator of children’s books and in his work as sketch artist and continuity illustrator at Walt Disney, Bill Peet created a menagerie of memorable characters. As he himself noted, "I write about animals because I love to draw them. Most of my animal characters have human personalities, and some are much like the people I know."

At Walt Disney, where Bill Peet worked for 27 years, he was a key participant in the production of classic films such as Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians for which he was not only an artist, but the screenwriter as well.

Bill Peet’s signature style enabled him to create fast-paced stories of fantastical adventure delivered with warmth and laugh-out-loud hilarity. His unfailing humor did not, however, prevent him from addressing such poignant issues as kindness toward others and respect for the environment. Through the exploits of his characters, Peet offered his audience a chance to see themselves and their world through new eyes.

"At some point," Bill Peet once said, "it occurred to me that drawing was something I couldn’t possibly give up, and somehow it must be turned into a profession." He went on to not only fulfill his dream but to introduce generations of young readers to his delightful vision of humor, friendship and compassion.

A little dark for the little ones

A little heavy on the dark and disastrousness of pollution, at least for my 2-year-old​. Great artwork and solid story, but just a little scary for the youngest ones out there.

I Love the Wumps

I loved this book when I was a little girl - introduced to it in first grade - and I love it as an adult. It made me teary then, and it makes me teary now. But hope is the central theme - the wumps, in the end, survive, return to the surface, and take up their lives, repairing the damage done by the invaders.

The wumps themselves are modelled after a South American rodent called the capybara, which I had never heard of until I was visiting a zoo as an adult and said, "Oh my gosh, a WUMP!" (My husband thought I was crazy.) I hadn't thought about the wumps for years, but it all came rushing back, and the book was JUST as good now as it was when I was a child.

The Peet family cared for a capybara for a while, and you can read about THAT in "Capyboppy," a "chapter book" for young readers. But the wumps are cuter.

If you love the Ewoks, here's one story you won't get anywhere else! This isn't just a re-telling of one of the cartoon episodes in the 80's, this is a stand-alone book that is very light and easy for any child to follow.

A great book that anyone to enjoy

I first read this book, when I was in the second grade. I was having trouble reading. I loved this book so much that I read over and over and eventually I became a strong reader. This is a great book that anyone who likes soccer will love. I am now in the sixth grade, love reading, and this is still one of my favorites. My favorite part of the book has always been when the second graders scrimmage the third graders. If you would like to find out who won, you should read this superlative book, Soccer Sam.

great book for beginning readers

I got this book along with several other step-4 books for my 6 year old son. He really enjoyed them especially since they seemed relevant to his life. He plays soccer and enjoyed reading the books and looking at the pictures. These books are well structured and provide kids with engaging stories at a level that pushes them to learn new words while also learning about social situations. I highly recommend these books to any beginning reader.

Suddenly the light stopped.  There on the edge of a rocky shelf was a human skull.

It seemed to grin at the boys.  And then it spoke to them.  "Go 'way," it sighed, with a strong accent that sounded Spanish.  "Let me 'ave my rest.  No treasure is here.  Only my tired old bones!"

This book is the sixth in the Three Investigator series. "The Mystery of the Vanishing Treasure" precedes this book, and "The Mystery of the Fiery Eye" follows. As we learned in previous books, the Three Investigators are Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw and Bob Andrews. Jupiter is the intelligent, sometimes inadvertently arrogant member of the group. Pete Crenshaw is typically the muscle of the group. Pete is usually quite fearless. Bob Andrews, who began the series with a broken leg, works at the library and handles records and research for the group. Bob's cast is off now but his leg is still weak.

The three boys travel to Skeleton Island and discover that the island is home to a ghost. The ghost rides the merry-go-round at an abandoned amusement park. The amusement park is to be the site of a film, but the ghostly happenings on the island are frightening local workers away and impeding the progress of the movie. In addition, the island was also supposedly the location where a pirate abandoned his treasure. Local treasure hunters have a habit of trespassing on the island to search for the treasure whenever someone finds a gold doubloon on or near the island. As if these mysteries were not enough, crooks may have hidden their loot near the island.

As with most of the stories in this series, this book was enjoyable to read. However, this book is weaker than most of the previous books in this series. The mystery was relatively mundane and the threats to the boys were frequently accidental rather than intentional. I always recommend starting with the first book in this series, "The Secret of Terror Castle," and I make that recommendation even stronger in the case of this book. You will gain a much better impression of the Three Investigators by starting at the beginning rather than with this book.

Quite a few children's mystery book series have become classics. Most people are familiar with Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and Tom Swift. Even the Boxcar Children are relatively well-known. However, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators are well-written books that offer an intelligent, interesting and more contemporary alternative to many of the earlier classic series. Many people recall the earlier series well, but the Three Investigators series, which Robert Arthur wrote and debuted in 1964, has, for now, largely been overshadowed by the other series and generally forgotten. Fortunately, all of these books are available either from Amazon or from other internet sources.

Ghosts, Pirates, and Treasure--Oh Boy!

In this adventure, the Three Investigators venture far away from Rocky Beach, California--3000 miles away to a haunted island on the east coast where Pete's father is working to restore an old thrill park for a movie he is working on. Having met with stolen equipment and the appearance of a ghost, the boys are sent for to figure out who is trying to keep the movie company away from Skeleton Island. The boys meet with danger and duplicity at every turn, it seems, getting themselves into even more trouble than usual--several times by their own doing. ...
There aren't really any plot twists or surprises in this story. What seems to me to be the biggest clue to the whole mystery flops out at you like a dead fish right in the middle of the book, and you have to wait until the end to see Jupiter finally seize upon it. Overall, though, it is still a pretty good story. It's hard to go wrong when you are writing about pirates, ghosts, and treasure. My childhood obsession with the secret headquarters at the Salvage Yard obviously continues because I certainly missed it in this book. The boys seemed to be somewhat out of their element here, and it shows. Of course, nothing can stop them from solving a mystery once they are on the case.

I rate The Mystery of Skeleton Island as one of the VERY BEST of the Three Investigator series. It proved that Jupiter, Pete and Bob can handle any mystery that comes their way - even if it's on the other side of the country! With this story, the reader is transported out of Rocky Beach for the first time as the boys join Pete's dad on the set of the movie "Chase Me Faster." Thrills and chills abound as a ghost terrorizes the set of the movie. So far it seems as if Random House is only re-issuing the Robert Arthur titles. Hopefully Random House will see that there is still a huge fan base that has been longing for more adventures of those three intrepid slueths from Rocky Beach. I would highly recommend The Secret of Skeleton Island - and every Three Investigator book - to any parent discouraged that their child won't read. BUY THIS BOOK!!!

Roger Tory Peterson, one of America's pre-eminent artist-naturalists and arguably the inventor of the field guide, made people love birds like no one since John James Audubon. A Field Guide to the Birds, first published in 1934, remains his most famous and wonderful work. The manual stood instantly apart from the dichotomous keys zoologists used to identify species, since Peterson grouped paintings of related species together and used arrows to, as he explained, "pinpoint the key field marks." This way, watchers could spot birds from a distance and avoid, as he archly put it, "the bird-in-hand characters that the early collectors relied on." Birders could use the guide where they needed it most--outdoors--on living birds flitting quickly by. In addition to detailed illustrations, Peterson offers charming (and useful) descriptions of each avian citizen's appearance, behavior, voice, and range. There is also priceless anecdotal information, based on decades of field experience, as in this description of the common house sparrow (Passer domesticus): "Familiar to everyone. Sooty city birds often bear little resemblance to clean country males with the black throat, white cheeks, chestnut nape." His transliterations of song are just as quietly marvelous. For instance, Pluvialis squatarola, or the black-bellied plover, makes things clear with "a plaintive slurred whistle, tlee-oo-eee or whee-er-ee (middle note lower)."

Peterson's original handbook covered birds of Eastern North America, and has since been followed by guides to Western birds, animal tracks, butterflies, and many other natural wonders. He and his team updated "The Birders' Bible" as new species were discovered and classifications modified. Generations of enthusiastic watchers owe Peterson a debt of gratitude for making ornithology accessible. But equally important, he showed scientists that finding beauty in living animals, and not just cataloging the measurements of dead ones, was crucial. Roger Tory Peterson died in 1996. He will be remembered as a passionate naturalist, a keen observer of living things, and a gifted artist and teacher. --Therese Littleton

A classic book for the beginning birder

This classic guide was the first of its type, and thus probably got more people into birding than any other book. Peterson uses ink drawings to show the important "field marks" for identifying species. The downside to these drawings is that they tend to idealize the birds, showing them in perfect postures and making the field marks more prominent than they really are. Many competitors, such as the Audubon Guide and the Stokes Guide, use photographs instead. Photographs give a more accurate portrayal of the subtleties of color and pattern in plumage, but there are always those poor shots in a photographic guide that are blurry or show the bird at a bad angle. Whether you decide that a guide based on drawings or photographs is best for you, I would strongly suggest that you pick up an audio recording of birdsongs, such as "Birding by Ear," or the "Field Guide to Eastern/Central Bird Songs," both put out by Peterson's. As any experienced birder will tell you, the ear is just as important as the eye, especially in summer, when birds are often hidden by foliage.

A classic field guide.

I've got several field guides dealing with the identification of birds. This one from Roger Tory Peterson is the best and most impressive. I first got a copy of it many years ago when I was very young. I've always taken it with me whenever I go birdwatching. I have that much confidence in it. Peterson's drawings are excellent, clear, and in full color. The field guide includes all of the birds of eastern and central North America. This includes accidentals, exotics, and escapes. The field guide also includes roadside and flight silhouettes. These silhouettes really do help in the identification of many species of birds. The book also has a systematic checklist that you can use to mark off the birds that you've seen. Range maps are included, too. All the vital information needed to identify birds in the field is here. Information such as habitat, voice, and length. The range maps have a section of their own in the back of the book. Peterson's method of identifying birds by conspicuous field marks (The "Peterson System") is great. This system has always been a real help. Arrows point to various parts of the bird that most readily help to identify it. There's also a section in the front of the guide that explains how to identify birds. This section is very informative. I've used this field guide for many years. I have other field guides that stay on the shelf whenever I go birdwatching. This guide from Roger Tory Peterson isn't one of those. This is the best field guide on the market. I recommend it.

the best I looked at

I looked at nine or ten bird books over the weekend before finally deciding on this one. I like it's compact size, durable cover and it's very complete index. The most important reason for my decision, however, is the fact that it shows pictures of both male and female birds where the female bird's plummage and head differ from that of the male. None of the other books I checked showed female birds or only showed them in very rare instances. I also like this book because it shows most birds in both standing or swimming positions and also in flight. There are also occasional drawings of chicks.
The text that accompanies the pictures is necessarily brief but covers: Latin and common names, description, food, range, migratory pattern, habitat, voice and similar species. Also included is a "Systematic Checklist" so you can keep a "life list" of all the birds you've seen. There is a guide to identifying birds by visual categories (swimmers, birds of prey, waders, perching birds, etc), size, tail and wing patterns. The last part of the book contains maps illustrating each bird's range which makes it easy to compare the habitat of, for example, an Olive-Sided Flycatcher with an Acadian Flycatcher.
Obviously this is a guidebook and not the type of book you sit down and read through, but I have found myself reading the entries for the often amusing "voice" sections. Here's the one for the Chestnut-Sided Warbler: "Song, similar to Yellow Warbler's; 'see see see see Miss Beech'er' or 'pleased pleased pleased to meet'cha;' penultimate note accented, last note dropping." Hey, someone who knows what "penultimate" really means!

The purpose of this book is to explain in detail the principles of draping fabric on the dress form, the principles of flat pattern designing from master pattern blocks, and the dependence of successful flat pattern making on an understanding of draping. We have devoted the entire book to the presentation of these two systems in order to show that a facility in both frees the designer to carry out any original costume with ease and confidence. This book should serve as a practical reference for college and high school students alike who need help with problems in pattern making as well as with alternation of patterns for both design and fit.

wonderful book. classic. should be required for all pattern makers.
those that say the styles are "too old" have missed the entire point of the book and should just go buy off the rack.

Jaw-Dropping Late 40s Designs and Comprehensive How-To

If you can somehow get past the jaw-dropping draped designs of the late 40s pictured throughout this book, it becomes the great how-to of clothing creation it was meant to be.

I come back to it again and again to gaze upon the intricately draped beauties of the late 40s and marvel at the complexity and sheer genius of these designs, a craft I believe that was never duplicated as it was done then. It was a style period I feel, that upended the boring utilitarianism of the earlier 40s and continued until the early 50's which preceded the monotonous samenes of the "wiggle" skirts and full skirts.

This book offers chapters on basic blouses and skirts, showing both a draped and a flat pattern method of creating.

The sleeve chapter is such a wealth of inspiration, it's hard to choose just one to attempt! My personal favorite is in the chapter entitled "Sources of Design" where some astounding draped garments are pictured with their corresponding flat pattern layout. Therein lies a dress having "deep cowl folds produced by placing the hip seams on the bias." WOW! Some of these designs, although all have a flat pattern diagram, are not for the faint-hearted....they are fairly complex in their execution but if tackled patiently could end up being a greatly rewarding accomplishment!

Fitting encompasses yet another chapter, showing examples of bad fit/good fit/problem solved. There is also a chapter on collars and later, sources of design showing mostly whole garments.

For the fashion historian/afficionado, this is an invaluable book that will please and inspire!

Dress Design:Draping and Flat Pattern Making

This book provides very clearly written and understandable instructions on how to create flat patterns. It includes also explanations on possible mistakes that may occur and what happens from those mistakes.
The drawings and diagrams are well-chosen to illustrate the processes and instructions from the text.
