About the Author
Bill Peet was the author of 34 books published by Houghton Mifflin. One of these, BILL PEET: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, was named a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book. All of Bill Peet’s books published by Houghton Mifflin Company, including his first book for children published in 1959, HUBERT'S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, remain actively in print today.

In both his career as an author and illustrator of children’s books and in his work as sketch artist and continuity illustrator at Walt Disney, Bill Peet created a menagerie of memorable characters. As he himself noted, "I write about animals because I love to draw them. Most of my animal characters have human personalities, and some are much like the people I know."

At Walt Disney, where Bill Peet worked for 27 years, he was a key participant in the production of classic films such as Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians for which he was not only an artist, but the screenwriter as well.

Bill Peet’s signature style enabled him to create fast-paced stories of fantastical adventure delivered with warmth and laugh-out-loud hilarity. His unfailing humor did not, however, prevent him from addressing such poignant issues as kindness toward others and respect for the environment. Through the exploits of his characters, Peet offered his audience a chance to see themselves and their world through new eyes.

"At some point," Bill Peet once said, "it occurred to me that drawing was something I couldn’t possibly give up, and somehow it must be turned into a profession." He went on to not only fulfill his dream but to introduce generations of young readers to his delightful vision of humor, friendship and compassion.

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

A little dark for the little ones

A little heavy on the dark and disastrousness of pollution, at least for my 2-year-old. Great artwork and solid story, but just a little scary for the youngest ones out there.

I Love the Wumps

I loved this book when I was a little girl - introduced to it in first grade - and I love it as an adult. It made me teary then, and it makes me teary now. But hope is the central theme - the wumps, in the end, survive, return to the surface, and take up their lives, repairing the damage done by the invaders.

The wumps themselves are modelled after a South American rodent called the capybara, which I had never heard of until I was visiting a zoo as an adult and said, "Oh my gosh, a WUMP!" (My husband thought I was crazy.) I hadn't thought about the wumps for years, but it all came rushing back, and the book was JUST as good now as it was when I was a child.

The Peet family cared for a capybara for a while, and you can read about THAT in "Capyboppy," a "chapter book" for young readers. But the wumps are cuter.

Andrew Weil knows this; but so does any intelligent person who takes a mind altering substance with the goal of understand his or her own mind. Dr. Weil wrote this book when he was a young man traviling from the U.S. all the way down the Americas. His journey is to better understand how different cultures and people use pychoactive substances to change their lives. He begins with native americans in the Dakota's and finishes with tribesman in South America. Many of his observations are valuable, such as the role eclipses mankind's evolution; and many are questionable, such as the value of self-induced vomiting. Recommended for young person's and person's inexperienced with psychoactive substances who want a little education from a intelligent user. Many of us however might find Dr. Weil's first book -The Natural Mind- to be more enlightening.

About the Author
Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia. They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art. They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art. During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory. When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines. After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy. Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt . It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears".

Over 50 children's books later, Stan and Jan still plan all of their books together -- both write the stories, and both write the pictures. They live outside of Philadelphia in the country.

The Day of the Dinosaur

ISBN 0394891309 - Let's be honest - despite the one reviewer whose child, obviously a genius at 4, knew that a Mesosaurus isn't a dinosaur, we're not buying these books to read to college students and Mensa members. The general audience for Berenstain books are young children who are either not yet in school or are only in their first few years. At that age, any dinosaur fan is going to like this book.

A quick rhyming (which I would swear is poetry, not prose) story of when dinosaurs lived, the sorts of dinosaurs that lived and what we can learn from the fossils left behind, The Day of the Dinosaur will entertain the true budding dino-fan and, hopefully, lead them to bigger, better, more scientifically exact books about dinosaurs down the road, when they're ready.

Don't waste your money!

A very poor effort from the point of view of a child. There are many errors in the book that will be caught by a four-year-old. Examples, Mesosaurus (a non-dinosaur marine reptile) and Eryops (an amphibian!!) are classed as dinosaurs and my four-year-old found these and about 8 others immediately. This book does have a saving grace, though, you can use it to introduce the child to critical thinking skills.

My 3 year old loves this book and it has helped him to understand the progression of life. He now understands that Dinosaurs and others came before us. He also understood the joke at the end. We really enjoy reading this book together.

Grade 1-3 Farley has undertaken another adaptation of his perpetually popular book, this time for readers not yet ready to tackle his The Black Stallion Picture Book (Random, 1979). This version is based on the ``Wild horse rescues boy'' segment of both the original story and the 1979 movie tie-in, from which a few sentences are repeated word-for-word. Writing in a bare-bones primer style, the author has pared down the adventures of Alec and the Black to a basic plot. Short, simple sentences describe the shipwreck, the struggle to survive, and the rescue that are already familiar to the millions of children who have seen the movie. Although the text is unremarkable, the illustrations succeed in recapturing the thrills of the ultimate child/horse fantasy. Drawing in pen-and-ink with a watercolor wash, Rabinowitz portrays the Black stallion as an exquisite, long-legged Arabian, with a strong resemblance to the real-life equine star, ``Cass Ole.'' Double-page spreads alternate with single-page illustrations, and they serve to convey the story independent of the text. Beautiful Story, Beautiful Book.

I grew up reading Walter Farley's books. They were the only ones I wanted to read when we went to the library. I love horses, Arabians in particular. I was equally glued to the film versions, dreaming of my own 'Black' one day. This picture book is a reminder of my childhood, filled with beautiful scenes from the film...many I had not seen before.

I recommend this book for those who want to reconnect with their childhood, or to inspire their own children.

Interesting story but rather weak mystery

The 20th Three Investigators mystery finds our protagonists on the road, away from the familiar suburban Rocky Beach setting. They are on a summer vacation with Hans and Konrad (the brothers who work for Jupiter's aunt and uncle) who are visiting their cousin Anna who runs an inn at a ski resort town.

There are two major threads to the book. The mystery proper is rather weak fare. One wonders why the normally bright Jupiter Jones doesn't become suspicious right away. It's hard to elaborate further without spoiling the plot though it's doubtful many readers will be stumped.

The other thread involves the supernatural which author M. V. Carey likes to mix into her books either as a possible red herring or occasionally something more substantial. I have mixed feelings about this practice. Detective stories should be strictly rational in my opinion with any ostensible supernatural events explained in mundane terms by the end (like in Scooby-Doo cartoons). Carey does keep the two adequately separated here though.

One thing Carey does well is creating interesting characters to interact with the cast. Even characters like the gas station attendant whose only role is exposition is well drawn. Carey also usually has female characters in larger roles than we normally see in Three Investigator stories and that is the case here.

All in all not one of the better mysteries in the series but suspenseful and well written. Three Investigator fans will enjoy it but today's young readers will find it rather dated.

The story keeps you on the edge of your chair.

The characters are kids you can look up to. The story is thrilling and fast paced. There is nothing about the story that seems unbelievable. It keeps you guessing until the end. I read this as a child and I have never forgotten it. It is one of the best series I have ever read.

One of the better M.V. Carey titles

As typical with the Three Investigator books written by M. (Mary) V. (Virginia) Carey, the story finds Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw, and Bob Andrews away from their "normal" surroundings of Rocky Beach and the Jones Salvage Yard. I first read this as a boy when the book was originally released, and owning all volumes in the series, I must highly recommend this book for its interesting plots and subplots, as well as good characterization. Also, it revolves a great deal around the Bavarian brothers, Hans and Konrad, who are usually seen in cursory glimpses working around the Salvage Yard or driving the truck in many other books in this fine series. The subplots of the other boarders at the "mysterious" aunt's home furthers the plot, along with the unseen animal presence and the fact that something is not quite right at the house leads the Investigators into a challenging mystery. The original hardcover can be found in the more readily available matte cover with the blue spiderweb endpapers, or the rarer glossy cover with plain white endpapers. Please be advised that if you order this used book from an amazon seller to inquire as to the condition of the endpapers and text block, as this series was unfortunately poorly bound by Random House and many copies have text blocks partially or completely separated from the boards.

A Classic Text on Research Design: Comprehensive and Concise

Now I understand why this book is regarded as a classic. It's because the authors did such a great job of covering their subject (designs for research) when they wrote this book in the mid-1960s. But don't be put off by the fact that it's old. What they write is no less applicable to the 21st century reader than it was to readers of the 1960s. This is a great resource for anyone who's interested in designing an experiment - especially in the social sciences. Most of the examples that the authors use are drawn from the fields of education and psychology, but the reader will find their words readily applicable to other fields of inquiry.
This is a book written in the "old school" style. It's comprehensive AND relatively concise. I'm sure there are contemporary books written on this subject in more colloquial language, but I bet they are a pale imitation of this classic text.
