My favorite book about a great American
By Taunya Kopke
Buy this book It is both a wonderful read and a scholarly work, a tough combination. It brings the time to life. It is full of wonderful stories and insights into the thinking of the time. A must read for anyone interested in history, politics, or the difficulties our country faces today. Perkins served for 9 years as Secretary of Labor under FDR, and was hugely responsible for the prosperity of the next three decades.

If you don't know who Francis Perkins was, she was largely responsible for the "Civilian Conservation Corps, the Public Works Administration and its successor the Federal Works Agency, and the labor portion of the National Industrial Recovery Act. With The Social Security Act she established unemployment benefits, pensions for the many uncovered elderly Americans, and welfare for the poorest Americans. She pushed to reduce workplace accidents and helped craft laws against child labor. Through the Fair Labor Standards Act, she established the first minimum wage and overtime laws for American workers, and defined the standard 40-hour work week. She formed governmental policy for working with labor unions and helped to alleviate strikes by way of the United States Conciliation Service, Perkins resisted having American women be drafted to serve the military in World War II so that they could enter the civilian workforce in greatly expanded numbers." A brilliantly written biography
By A Customer
George Martin has written a deeply intelligent, very well researched, scholarly biography of Perkins. Using Perkins' Papers at Columbia University he offers eloquent antedote as well as well constructed historical context for Perkins' contributions & life. Superbly written, wonderfully scholarly, well worth the read.

Not worth the read
By A Customer
Frances Perkins was a very interesting lady, one of the first female Cabinet members and an innovator of social legislation in America. This book unfornutely doesn't go too far in depth into her character, serving as neither history nor biography. Martin instead focuses on nonimportant anecdotes, which make for a few good moments, but hardly a good book overall.

A great collection of Sci-Fi!
By Brian Post
This is, by far, my favorite collection of science fiction stories. As the title states, this book showcases some of the best short story examples of the most common themes in the genre.

The first theme showcased is that of Alien Worlds. Tom Godwin's "Too Soon to Die" is a riveting story that has you cheering by the end. Other authors include Roger Zelazny, Alan Dean Foster, L. Sprague de Camp, Fritz Leiber, Poul Anderson, Arthur C. Clarke, along with many, many authors of note.

Frederic Brown's "Answer" will chill you. Robert Sheckley's "Odor of Thought" will intrigue you. J.W. Schult's "The Santa Claus Problem" will amuse you. Raymond E. Banks contributes a classic Space Opera theme story called "Transstar" that has all the gloriously cheesy qualities you would want in such a story.

The cover reads "Fifty Great Works of Science Fiction." I couldn't agree more.

Smith of Wootton Major, by J. R. R. Tolkien

A charming new pocket edition of one of Tolkien's major pieces of short fiction, and his only finished work dating from after publication of The Lord of the Rings. What began as a preface to The Golden Key by George MacDonald eventually grew into this charming short story, so named by Tolkien to suggest an early work by P.G. Wodehouse. Composed almost a decade after The Lord of the Rings, and when his lifelong occupation with the 'Silmarillion' was winding down, Smith of Wootton Major was the product of ripened experience and reflection. It was published in 1967 as a small hardback, complete with charming black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes, and would be the last work of fiction to be published in Tolkien's own lifetime. Now, almost 50 years on, this enchanting tale of a wanderer who finds his way into the perilous realm of Faery is being published once again as a pocket hardback. Contained here are many intriguing links to the world of Middle-earth, as well as to Tolkien's other tales, and this new edition is enhanced with a facsimile of the illustrated first edition, a manuscript of Tolkien's early draft of the story, notes and an alternate ending, and a lengthy essay on the nature of Faery.

Review
"The book has a haunting quality, characteristic of the best of the 'deeper' folktales. It is a beautiful, memorable story." Times Educational Supplement "It may be compared to the most delicate miniature but it is one of a rare kind: the more closely it is examined the more it reveals the grandeur of its conception. Whoever reads it at eight will still be going back to it at eighty." New Statesman "A tremendously valuable volume with important new insights into Tolkien's way of working. It's also a beautiful hardcover edition of the story." Mythprint

About the Author
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892–1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but even as he studied these classics he was creating a set of his own.

All the way from Daybreak to Evening
By EA Solinas
While most of his genius went into the world of Middle-Earth and its fantastical history, JRR Tolkien produced a number of smaller stories during his life.

And though he disliked allegory, the enchanting "Smith of Wootton Major" is a bit of an oddity among his writings -- a beautifully fantastical little fable that drips over with Tolkien's love of real, deep fairy tales. And unlike many a story of elves or faeries since, Tolkien keeps that sense of mystery and magic in the world of the supernatural.

It takes place in a little town "not very long ago for those with long memories, not very far away fro those with long legs." The Master Cook of that village takes a vacation, and returns with an apprentice in tow. But something odd happens at the Feast of the Cake -- the cook stirs in a "fay-star" with little trinkets in the cake, and it's accidentally swallowed by a boy there.

The boy (later called Smith) is changed by the fay-star, which sparkles on his forehead. When he grows up, Smith ventures into Faery itself, and even meets the Faery Queen herself. The message she gives him is for her mysterious, missing husband, the King -- who turns out to be the last person anybody in Wootton Major would have expected.

"Smith" is a fairy tale in the best sense. Don't expect cackling witches or convenient loopholes in spells here; Tolkien was too skilled for that. Instead we have majestic fey and sparkling magic, woven with a tidy medieval town (consider the custom of naming people after their jobs -- Smith, a smith, capisce?). Never once does it become precious or cutesy, only more enchanted as it goes along.

It's also among Tolkien's simpler writings, especially since it is effectively a short story. In fact, it's so simple that it barely has a plot -- the vanishing King is the closest it has to conflict or a complete plot.

But Tolkien's writing sparkles with little details of the fey, with only a minimum of description. His glimpses of Faerieland are too brief, but written with the exquisite, haunting quality of his better-known works ("Once in these wanderings he was overtaken by a grey mist and strayed long at a loss, until the mist rolled away and he found that he was in a wide plain"). And he gives the impression of a world of magic far greater than any human could grasp ("... bearing the white ships that return from battles on the Dark Marches of which men know nothing").

And Smith is an odd sort of hero, infused with a kind of otherworldly light and grace that shines from him in the form of "Starbrow." Perhaps it was so stand in for the ability to see the magical and fantastical in the mundane world -- and if so, perhaps Tolkien felt that he himself had been given a fay-star that never left him.

Certainly the beauty and sweetness of "Smith of Wootton Major" suggest that he had one always -- an underrated little tale of magic and faerie, which highlights Tolkien's sublime writing.

Tolkien's portrait of the inexpressible wonder of grace.
By A Customer
Farmer Giles of Hamm is a hilarious tale in the spirit of the lighter passages of The Hobbit. The Little Kingdom of this story has much in common with the Shire where Bilbo Baggins wandered. It should be read for the shear pleasure of the journey.
Smith Of Wooten Major is something else entirely. Though once again we travel to an ancient England that has much in common with Middle Earth, here we find a tale for grown ups. Though most reviewers say that the tale is about what the gift of fantasy adds to the life of those who receive it, I believe that it really speaks of the rewards that come to those who choose to live life on a deeper level. What makes the book difficult to describe is that in story form Tolkien paints a picture or an illustration of the faith and the grace that were such an integral part of who he was as a person. Travelling with him you feel that you have encountered something more deep and wonderful than words can tell. The journey is not for everyone, but for those of you who take it and begin to glimps its meaning, like Smith's magic star, it will become an integral part of who you are.

A Revelation of Tolkien's Visions of Faery
By Paul E. Thomas
J.R.R. Tolkien's short work, "Smith of Wooten Major," which he wrote late in life, has already appeared in several fine editions, both by itself and in combination with other pieces by Tolkien, and most of us Tolkien enthusiasts already have it on our shelves. So why another one now, and why should we buy it? There are several compelling things about this book that make it highly attractive to those seeking a deeper understanding of Tolkien as a writer and thinker, and I'll only mention four here. First, this extended edition includes an important never-before-published essay by Tolkien on the story and on Tolkien's views of the nature of Faery, of its importance to him, of faery tales, and of the role of allegory in stories of this kind. It is a fascinating piece that provides new insight into Tolkien's thought as an artist trying to capture glimpses of Faery in his writing. The essay is in some ways an echoing companion piece for his famous earlier essay "On Fairy Stories," in which, among other things, Tolkien outlines his theory of sub-creation that he executed so successfully in "The Lord of the Rings." Second, the book contains never-before-published early notes and draft manuscripts for Smith, several pages of which are reproduced in the book itself in their original hand-written form with helpful transcriptions on the opposite page. These papers not only show Tolkien actively creating and revising his story and the history of its characters, but they also show Tolkien's working methods as a writer and so demonstrate, in a microcosm, the methods he used on such a large scale for "The Lord of the Rings." Third, Flieger's editorial contributions are very helpful. She provides an afterword that discusses the critical treatement of Smith, its genesis as a story, and outlines the new material which, as she says, allow the reader to follow "the authorial progression from explanation to inspiration to formulation to painstaking revision." Flieger's notes are also very helpful, for she points us to relevant matters in Tolkien's other works and illuminates puzzling aspects of Smith. And fourth, this is perhaps the first edition of Smith that takes Tolkien's statements that it is not a children's story seriously. He called Smith "an old man's book, already weighted with the presage of bereavement." Previous editions of Smith have ignored this statement and dressed the tale up as a children's book, presumably based on the unquestioned assumption (which Tolkien questioned very sharply in "On Fairy Stories") that because this is a faery tale, and because it is short, it must be for children. This edition honors Tolkien's view not only of Smith but of the importance of Faery and faery stories in general by beautifully reproducing the tale and the lovely Pauline Baynes illustrations, which were made for the first edition, and by setting them within a handsome hardcover text that Tolkien readers will prize very highly. This is a must have.

Oliver Twist meets Blow Up meets the Quiet American
By Lars Ericson
Charles Dicken's grim London is mashed up with Antonioni's mod London and Graham Greene's moody tone in this tale of a young American Foreign Service dropout escaping the United States-Viet Nam war who crashes in a London slum with a small band of half-hearted hipster/Irish revolutionaries.

His depictions of London are vivid and I found myself checking Wikipedia to compare his descriptions of each neighborhood against the reality, and I found that even with the passage of 35 years, his descriptions hold true. This is evidence of Theroux's keen eye as a travel writer.

The tone is an attempt at both moody sentimentality and social satire.

One sees the author modelling himself as a resourceful tough guy in the hero.

Other than the hero, the characters and situations are drawn somewhat thinly. Depictions of sexual longing and sexual situations in general seem most well-drawn and realistic.

The whole story doesn't quite hold together. 5 or 6 characters are drawn together from different parts of London in an excessive amount of meet-cute.

The denouement is rather tidy.

I won't describe the whole plot out of respect for Theroux initiates who will enjoy the writing on a page-by-page basis, as I did, without necessarily admiring the whole.

Also be warned that there are pages of flights of fancy every 10 pages or so that are somewhat tedious to plow through.

The author is at his best in depicting sexual situations and action situations. The passages depicting character's inner motivations are generally rather tedious, and many character stereotypes are invoked.

The politics of the novel are not the main driving force of the story, which is character driven. While the scaffolding has a lot of politics in it, overall the politics are completely irrelevant, because the story is centrally about the feelings and sense of isolation of the main character.

The novel was written in 1975, when the author was 34 or so, and this relative youth may account for some of the stereotyping and the thin-ness of the characters.

Not a bad read but he's done better and is at his best in his travel writing and when he is more directly writing about versions of himself. This is because the author is a reflective and entertaining narcissist and so writes more deeply when he is writing directly about himself.

Gripping Tale of London's Poor Laced With Violence
By John Kwok
Without question, Paul Theroux has been among our most astute observers of human nature writing in the English language. In "The Family Arsenal", a terse, compelling look at crime in London's slums, Paul Theroux takes an unflinching, often brutal, look at the interplay between adverse poverty and crime. Furthermore he adds to this compelling mixture an intriguing look at IRA terrorism being waged on the streets of London. All of this is told through vivid, well-crafted prose. Fans of Paul Theroux's work will not be disappointed with his latest fictional excursion into an abyss of contemporary Western society.

From the dark side of life...
By almasy@gte.net
Theroux has always been an unflinching narrator on human nature. With a novel like Mosquito Coast he gave you a look at the mind of a genius and his estrangement to materialism. With The Family Arsenal, Theroux gives you a look at the close knit troubles of family life in the slums of London, and the frightening results of sudden violence that can arrupt at any moment. A haunting portrait of a society on the downward trend towards hell on earth.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 6 Nineteen popular traditional tales selected from the works of the Grimm brothers, Andersen, Perrault and others form the contents of this fine collection. Ehrlich drew upon many sources, listed in back but not keyed to individual tales, and her literary but not effusive retellings remain faithful, for the most part, to the common canon. (Exceptions include Hansel's holding out a knuckle to the witch rather than a chicken bone; Rapunzel's twins are missing; and the prince's mere presence rather than a kiss wakes the Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.) The soft pastel colors of Goode's pencil and watercolor illustrations give a misty, faraway quality to Once-upon-a-time, but they are too much alike and occasionally too bland to be totally effective. Still, it's a good companion volume to Prelutsky and Lobel's Random House Book of Poetry for Children (1983) and a nicely packaged collection that will give pleasure to many a grateful child. the random house book of fairy tales
By A Customer
From 35 year old mom of 6: I have read from many different fairy tale books over the years and this one is still my favorite. The reasons it is my favorite fairy tale book are: 1. It contains 19 of my favorite stories 2. Amy Ehrlich who wrote the stories, consulted several different versions, and retold them in their full splendor without dumbing the text down. 3. On every two page spread is a large detailed illustration by Diane Goode emmanating much warmth and charm.
Although the text is not dumbed down, this book still appeals to the 4-8 year old range because of the large picture to text ratio.

good stories but pictures can be a little scary
By Katherine
This is a great collection of stories, but when I was a little girl I was very scared of some of the drawings of the villians. So, the illustrations are excellent but a very young child might find them a little...intense. Nevertheless, I still liked the book and read it often.

Short but Not Sweet
By D. Anania
I recently purchased the book "The Random House Book of Fairy Tales", thinking that it would be a good representation of some of the most famous fairy tales in history. While the selection of tales was very impressive (and the reason why I felt comfortable buying this book) I was very dissappointed by how the stories were edited. I felt that the endings came abruptly and that parts of the body of the stories were trunkated and at times disconnected.

I would recommend searching further if you want to find a more throrough representation of these selections.

Cute, Not Accurate
By A. Whipple
This is really cute book, telling the story of Jesus' birth through children putting on a play (though it was not obvious to my 4 yo they were putting on a play)...and it even explains at the end that is why we celebrate Christmas each year. I love that it connects the then with the now.

I would not want this as my only source of the story of Jesus' birth because of two flaws when compared to the biblical story. First, Mary and Joseph were not married (Luke 1:27), and this book says they were. Second, the wise men came to see Jesus at the stable, and not at the home of Mary and Jesus. (Matthew 2:11).

Granted, both of these mistakes happen often in the retelling of the real Christmas story, but I wanted those who cared to know before purchasing.

Complete, yet simple, story of the first Christmas.
By Michael J Cucci
This book is the best introduction to the story of the first Christmas that I have seen. It provides a short and sweet explaination of Mary and Joseph, their journey to Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus, the visitors to the stable, and why we celebrate Christmas today. Fabulous illustrations, especially for those little animal lovers. Wonderful for toddlers...my two year old wouldn't let me put it away after the holidays were over!

The Christmas Story is incorrect.
By The Whole Truth
This book was a big disappointment. The story starts out with the error that Mary and Joesph were married, lived in a house, and wanted a baby. It seems the author did not know the story very well or did not know how to explain the story to a small child. It should have been written something along these lines: " Mary was sweet and good. There was a kind man named Joseph who loved her very much. They were going to get married.

One day God sent an angel to Mary to tell her something very special. God had seen what a good girl Mary was and how much she loved Him. Because of this, He choose Mary to have the most special baby the world had ever known.
She was going to be Jesus' mommy!"

To Bedlam and Part Way Back, by Anne Sexton

This book of poems has the cumulative impact of a good novel. It has the richness variety and compactness of true poetry. It is a book to read and remembered. Sexton is an accomplished lyricist. She can combine the straightforwardness of playing on his speech with the saddle with the control, tight formal structure, and brilliantly effective imagery. But she makes her singular claim on our attention by the fact that she has important things to tell us and tells them dramatically.

A powerful poetic voice
By Shalom Freedman
This was Anne Sexton's first collection of poems. It is easy to understand why it made such a strong impression. It has a power in feeling and expression, a reaching beyond any restrait or limit - it is confessional poetry in which the poet seems to spare no one, least of all herself. Her whole enterprise in poetry began at the suggestion of her psychoanalyst and she was in the worlds of extreme emotion long before she began to write. Her descriptions of life in the asylum, including those of her fellow 'inmates' are striking. But the poems also include pieces involving her relations to family members, perhaps her mother first and above all, but also her father, and a beloved aunt of hers who she reimagines the life of. Sexton's language is richly metaphoric and original. The feeling in reading her work is that she is a poet at the highest level, whatever objection one might have to certain kinds of sentiment she expresses i.e. She does not seem especially generous and forgiving of those closest to her. In one of the poems she speaks of herself as having been an unwanted third daughter. As a mother of two daughters she defines their lives and being too primarily in relation to her own needs.
Among the many outstanding poems there is the one which opens the book, 'You, Doctor Martin' which tells of her psychiatrist who each morning 'walks from breakfast to madness','Her Kind'in which the refrain 'I have been her kind' connects the poet with the 'witch' whose actions are described in the poem,'Some Foreign Letters' in which she in rereading letters her aunt wrote from Europe in the 1890's 'learns to love her twice', 'The Funnel' in which she tells the story of her great- grandfather who ' begat eight genius children and brought twelve almost new pianos'. This last poem concludes with the following stanza;
'Back from that great- grandfather I have come
to puzzle a bending gravestone for his sake,
to question this diminishing and feed a minimum
of children their careful slice of suburban cake.'
Sexton is a writer whose sense of life's toughness, pain , difficulty, perhaps even impossibility is very great. She is not to be taken in large doses without danger of negative effect. But her power ,daring and linguistic brilliance are unmistakable.

Restrained Melancholy and Rhythmic Genius
By Peter Uys
In this evocative volume (and also in the second book All My Pretty Ones), Sexton's despair is still beautifully controlled, enabling her to discuss it with an aloof but engaging sense of objectivity. For example, The Waiting Head is a poignant memory of a beloved grandmother who lived alone and the poem ends with the line "but no one came no one came." Equally poignant, but humorous too, is her description of being admitted to a mental institution. The poem is called Music Swims Back To Me and contains a repeating refrain and flowing rhythm that convey the sense of alienation particularly well. Said The Poet To The Analyst, a look at the relation between patient and therapist, is another masterpiece in its economical use of vivid images and the rhythm of the words. The poem Her Kind described the poet as the witch, inhabiting a different world and a person "who is not ashamed to die." The Moss Of His Skin opens with a quote from Psychoanalysis And Psychoanalytic Review and is a resigned description of a terrifying occurrence, being buried alive. The musical quality of Sexton's poetry comes to the fore again in her tale of accepting the death of a friend, in the poem Elizabeth Gone, one of the most magical elegies I have ever read. Noon Walk On The Asylum Lawn integrates a line from Psalm 23 in each of the three stanzas, juxtaposing the reassuring words of protection with her own terrifying observations to eerie effect, for example, the second verse:
"The grass speaks.
I hear green chanting all day.
I will fear no evil, fear no evil
The blades extend
And reach my way."
A sense of first hand experience lends a genuine authenticity to these poems, whilst her mastery of imagery and the natural rhythm of language is original and impressive. To Bedlam And Part Way Back and All My Pretty Ones remain her best books, since the later works became so bleak and harrowing that some of them are very painful to read and digest.

Amazon.com Review
"Here is the book that Romeo would have given Juliet; Charlie Brown would have given Snoopy; and you can give to some very special friend" proclaims the back cover of this small, whimsical book. Written in 1965 by Sandol Stoddard Warburg, it still makes the perfect present for your best friend. Not just any run-of-the-mill best friend, though. This book is for the kind of friend who yells for you when you get lost in Grand Central Station or pretends to save you when you pretend to be drowning. Or, as Warburg puts it, "You know how to be silly / That's why I like you / Boy are you ever silly / I never met anybody sillier than me / till I met you." I Like You is simple and quirky, uses words like "snurkle," and is laden with delightful Maurice Sendak-style pen-and-ink illustrations of alligators dancing, lively children, mirth, and general goofiness. Do you need new answers to the question "How do I like thee?" I Like You is a great help for counting the ways.(All Ages)
