A case of not so simple deduction
By Daniel Jolley
The Mystery of the Shrinking House offers up yet another impressive display of young Jupiter Jones' deduction skills. At first, there does not seem to be much of a case at all-a Countess wants to reclaim the items from her dead brother's estate, all of which had recently been purchased by Jupe's Uncle Titus for the Jones Salvage Yard. By the time the Countess arrives to make the request, all of the items have been sold, and the boys take on the task of tracking the items down. They find almost everything except for a strange series of 20 paintings; these paintings all depict a particular house, and the house is drawn progressively smaller on each one. When bad guys show up to interfere with the Three Investigators' budding investigation, Jupiter knows that the strange paintings are the key to something big. It is worth noting that this book features Jupiter's young nemesis Skinny Norris, but Skinny once again proves himself to be no Dr. Moriarty to Jupiter's Sherlock Holmes.
It's a well-told story, complete with a surprise or two at the end. The whole logic of the shrinking house clue ended up feeling slightly contrived, but the path to discovery was an enjoyable one. The boys seem to walk right into one trap after another, but these detectives have never left a mystery unsolved and refuse to do so now, even in the face of danger. There is plenty of action in these pages, but this story really does hinge on the deductive reasoning powers of Jupiter Jones. In this, his fourth Three Investigators mystery (and the eighteenth in the series as a whole), William Arden demonstrates a good feel for the characters, but even he fails to capture all of the nuances that made series creator Robert Arthur's books so gripping and entertaining.

Above average entry in this fine juvenile series
By Jim Davis
This book is from the days when one didn't have to invoke the supernatural to interest younger readers not that I have any particular problem with that, times and tastes change. The heroes and heroines of the boys' and girls' series book of an earlier generation only had to solve mundane, down to earth mysteries while overcoming the obstacles of school, parental supervision, and no driver's license. The present book is a fine example of this genre.
The plot is fairly straightforward - find something valuable that is missing before a number of other interested parties do while trying to determine the good guys from the bad guys. This all works quite well with credulity not unduly strained. The clues seem more convoluted than really needed to be the case and dying words accurately recalled weeks after the fact is a mystery convention which readers have long since learned to accept.
Also of interest in this book is the integration of our stalwarts' old nemesis Skinny Norris tightly into the story rather than as the occasional plot device he usually is.
Highly enjoyable and thoroughly recommended. The story does suffer from being dated but if a modern young reader can get past that their time will not have been wasted.

The case gets harder as the house gets smaller
By Terry McNamee
As is often the case with the Three Investigators, something which starts out small--the recovery of a deceased reclusive artist's possessions for his beautiful and mysterious sister--turns into something much more convoluted, dangerous, and exciting.
There's a lot going on in this particular installment of the series...the aforementioned search which changes into a search for a long-lost masterpiece (a plot familiar to readers thanks to "Stuttering Parrot"), a race against nefarious art criminals (though not, sadly, Victor Hugenay), another artist who keeps a wild leopard on his vast jungle-like estate as a model, and the unrepentant rapscallion Skinny Norris in a role where, for once, he is very much a key part of the narrative as both villain and, eventually, regretful and reluctant ally.
But the story is more than the sum of its parts, and in fact it has a number of unbelievable elements--from the cryptic dying words of Joshua Cameron, to the eyebrow-raising but admittedly accurate way Jupiter deduces that their adversary is not the one he appears to be (while it is very likely true that someone unfamiliar with the dangers of an area would learn from running afoul of them and thus not make the same mistake twice, it's hard to believe no one could never fall in a barranca more than once). And the solution to the puzzle posed by the missing paintings is actually one the observant reader can guess if they pay attention to a particular illustration in the book.
What makes the story work, and in my mind stands out as one of the best in the series if not the best is how well the reader, along with the boys, is misled as to who is innocent and who are the criminals. While I admit to being slightly suspicious of the apparent good guys' story, I never once suspected they might not be good guys at all. Nor did I suspect the treasure they were all after would turn out to be fake in the end. While this book does have a few elements to raise one's skepticism, in the end I have to say the action and danger, the convoluted plot, and the revelation that beauty does not equal goodness and ugliness villainy makes this the most memorable in the series and with one of the best lessons. It's the first time someone thought to be good turned out to be bad, and the only time where said secretly-villainous good guys were the Investigators' actual clients. Quite a subversion, very well done indeed.
