About the Author
James Marshall (1942–1992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious children’s books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a master’s degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his life’s work as one of the finest creators of children’s books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children.

Hippos Show the Way

This is just one in a fabulous series of books featuring George and Martha, the hippo equivalent of Nick and Nora Charles. Their light banter and misunderstandings set the stage for imaginative, humorous resolutions. The hippos' warmth and obviously mutual friendship is evident throughout. There are five stories in its 47 pages, with big simple pictures adorning every other page. A great book for early and late toddlers up to around age five or so.

Only three stories included -- missing two!

We were totally disappointed by this purchase -- George and Martha Rise and Shine is one of James Marshall's best. However, what a disappointment to discover that (inexplicably) two of the stories that we've come to love after checking this book out of the library numerous times are not included in this new edition. How about a complete version, please???

A fine set of tales

THE FIBBER tells of George's attempts to impress Martha with some lies; THE EXPERIMENT tells of Martha's possible science gone awry, and THE PICNIC tells of two very different interests in a day off. Can the two friends compromise their different styles? A fine set of tales is perfect for chapter book early readers.
