About the Author
Hal H. harrison, a retired newspaperman and lecturer, was the outdoor editor of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE for thirteen years, and for more than twenty years he lectured on outdoor adventures using his own color motion pictures. Mr. Harrison's stories and photographs have appeared in hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and books. He is the former president of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Brooks Bird Club of West Virginia and is a member of the American Ornithologists' Union and the Wilson Ornithological Society.

Roger Tory Peterson, one of the world's greatest naturalists, received every major award for ornithology, natural science, and conservation, as well as numerous honorary degrees, medals, and citations, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Not Helen Corbitt's best recipes, dated

"The Helen Corbitt Collection" was not compiled by Helen Corbitt. The recipes were very old style and most were not interesting for use today. I wasted money and time ordering this book and I just packed it away and will not use it.
I have more than 300 cookbooks and one I treasure is "Helen Corbitt's Cookbook" by Helen Corbitt, copyright l957, 13th printing, October l960. The red hardback cover has faded and fallen off, the index is in shreds from so much use, but the cookbook pages themselves gamely hold together.This was one of my first cookbooks,I have used it for fifty-one years. When it was new and for decades after it was in demand. It is still one of my favorite cookbooks that I consult because the recipes are so easy, so unpretentious.
I have it sitting in a bookcase filled with nearly one hundred cookbooks, right beside "Brennan's of Houston In Your Kitchen" with famous Chef Carl Walker. Both are real food and two favorites, no cookbook collection would be complete without these two cookbooks.
But skip "The Helen Corbitt Collection." Someone was just trading on Corbitt's name and recipes.

About the Author
Bill Peet was the author of 34 books published by Houghton Mifflin. One of these, BILL PEET: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, was named a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book. All of Bill Peet’s books published by Houghton Mifflin Company, including his first book for children published in 1959, HUBERT'S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, remain actively in print today.

In both his career as an author and illustrator of children’s books and in his work as sketch artist and continuity illustrator at Walt Disney, Bill Peet created a menagerie of memorable characters. As he himself noted, "I write about animals because I love to draw them. Most of my animal characters have human personalities, and some are much like the people I know."

At Walt Disney, where Bill Peet worked for 27 years, he was a key participant in the production of classic films such as Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians for which he was not only an artist, but the screenwriter as well.

Bill Peet’s signature style enabled him to create fast-paced stories of fantastical adventure delivered with warmth and laugh-out-loud hilarity. His unfailing humor did not, however, prevent him from addressing such poignant issues as kindness toward others and respect for the environment. Through the exploits of his characters, Peet offered his audience a chance to see themselves and their world through new eyes.

One of the BEST!

This is one of my all time favorite Bill Peet books. I remember the good ole days of my youth spent at library reading most of his books. Fly Homer Fly is a heartwarming story about Homer, a pigeon who leaves his dull country life for the big city. It's rather like a fish out of water story. Homer gets bullied by huge city pigeons and injures his wing after escaping. Just as a cat is about to pounce; his sparrow friends rescue him, take him back home sweet home to the countryside and nurse him back to health.

Homer begins to realize how good life was back in the country and is faced with having to adjust to his new life or return home.

Lessons for Life

Like a good children's book should, "Fly Homer Fly" has great life lessons that are simplified into a beautiful short story for children. The illustrations evoke a sense of blue longing for something. Homer leaves his country home and find disillusionment with the dangerous city and its mean birds. Isn't there something to be said about all our so-called progress and our relentless search for something better when all that really matters is already at our fingertips and requires only our appreciation and attention?

The Doctor Who Technical Manual originally came out in the early 1980s, clearly covering events up through the early part of Peter Davison's tenure as the Fifth Doctor. It is fully of diagrams, background materials, and has a number of good quality color photos from various events of the Third and Fourth Doctor's times.

I could tell the book was not new, but wear and tear on the book was minimal, and it was more than worth the purchase price.

I'd definitely do business with this seller again.

Good, but sparse, resource

This is a pretty handy book in regards to some details on some of the major technologies shown in the Dr. Who series up to about the mid-80's. You get some great detail on items like the TARDIS, Daleks, and even a comprehensive bio of the Doctor himself. However much of the information featured on the book doesn't give you much more than dimensions and if you're lucky some detail on the diagram.

For the stuff they are comprehensive on you get a good amount of historic information as well as some technical. The history of the Time Lords is pretty well rounded for two pages of text, as is the history of the Doctor. K9 gets some exposure too, but it's hardly anything more than you would already know if you have been watching Tom Baker's Who anyway.

If you want to know about Daleks this book cover a lot. Not only the history and capabilities of the Daleks, but also illustrations of all the major Dalek models to the date of printing (including the Dalek Emperor). This includes a simple, yet effective illustration of what's inside a Dalek as well. There is also a healthy entry for the Dalek nemesis race the Movellans.

The Cybermen get a sizeable piece of the manual but all you really get is their history and illustrations of all the iterations of the Cybermen from the beginning up to the ones from the 80's (Tom Baker era). While it would be nice to get more info than what was provided (inner workings, weapons, ships they used, etc) on them I did like what they had.

Of course the main attraction is the TARDIS and you get some good detail on it in this book from the history, details on the Doctor's, basic control panel descriptions, capabilities, and more. You even get a silly cut out exercise in the back section of the book on how to make your own paper TARDIS.

Another interesting tibit you get in the book is the Doctor's tools, including the sonic screwdriver. Unfortunately you only get a brief description of that handy tool. They do mention all of the other tools in the TARDIS tool kit, but you get no description on their use.

Some things that are in the book like space ships give you nothing more than just a simple blueprint-styled illustrations with dimensions. On the offset you can glean some information like where the radar is placed, but that info is sparse at best.

All in all the Doctor Who Technical Manual is a mixed bag. In some instances you get some great information. Other you get hardly nothing at all. It's a rather thin paperback so don't expect a world of information. From what I can tell all the information on the book is indeed canon (for example the book refers to being an official guide and gives credit to scrip writers for resources). If it's just the basics you are looking for then this is a good start.

This book gives you details and measurements for all Dr Who related objects like the Sonic Screwdriver, the TARDIS and its console. Also detailed layouts, history and measurements of Davros and his DALEKS, all makes and models of the Cybermen, The Giant Robot, K-9 and spaceships featured in the show. There is also a colour photo section showing some of the creatures featured in the manual. Many people have claimed to have built their own TARDIS's and consoles based on the information given in this manual. RECOMMENDED to the fans with a technical mind.

I agree that this is not the finest book written on King Arthur, but it is one that can be read aloud, and easily enhanced by a grandmother anxious to read these legends to a second grader---- finding something appropriate for a young listener has not been easy!

About the Author
Paul Galdone was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1914 and emigrated to the United States in 1928. After finishing his studies at the Art Student League and the New York School of Industrial Design, Mr. Galdone worked in the art department of a major publishing house. There he was introduced to the process of bookmaking, an activity that was soon to become his lifelong career. Before his death in 1986, Mr. Galdone illustrated almost three hundred books, many of which he himself wrote or retold. He is fondly remembered for his contemporary style, bright earthy humor, and action-filled illustrations, which will continue to delight for generations to come.

excellent book

We are huge Paul Galdone fans, because his illustrations are so immediate. If you have read his "Three Billy Goats Gruff", you know what I mean - he puts you so close inside the story, and it makes a big impression on small children.

In addition to Galdone's clean style, this book has even more charm: the unusual shape of the book. It is a tall, narrow book, which emphasizes that in these three stories, something is always out of reach.

The stories are:
1) The Fox and the Grapes
2) The Fox and the Stork
3) The Fox and the Crow

I hope your family loves this book as much as we do!

In this Paul Galdone book, three of Aesop's classic tales are retold. The first story is "The Fox and the Grapes"; the second is the "The Fox and the Stork"; and the last is "The Fox and the Crow".

The artwork is typical of Galdone. The writing is sparse without being Spartan, and if I am not mistaken, this book was originally published as one of the 'Weekly Reader Children's Book Club' books, so that it is simple by design.

Though I am by no means an expert at saying what age levels are appropriate for this book, I would think that a second or third grader would do alright reading this on their own.

Whether they can understand the morals that Aesop, that ancient sage of Phrygia, was trying to get across is going to depend upon their sophistication. Galdone actually tells the reader what the moral is at the end of each story, but *real* comprehension may take years.

I'm not at all sure my 5 year-old comprehends, but I did want to expose my children to the classics and if they don't understand it now, no doubt, they will later.

Surprisingly, my 3 year-old really likes this book. He asks for it at least once a day and most likely it is the artwork that attracts him. Galdone has a wonderful way of drawing expressions.

A good addition to the home library.

Five stars for artwork and serving double duty as an introduction to Aesop as well as being a beginning reader.
