Calculating without a calculator is easier than you think!

This book shaped my life. I still have the algrebra medal that I won in ninth grade, partly because I checked out "Quick and Easy Math" again and again from the public library. Not only will it teach you ways to calculate in your head faster than you could on paper, but some of the methods require you to look at numbers with a bit more insight than the usual school child who memorizes the "times tables." In every case, Asimov explains clearly WHY the methods work, imparting valuable ideas as well as cute calculating tricks. How many of us know how to multiply any number by 999, quickly and without pencil, paper or calculator? Easy as can be, IF you know the principle behind it. Not every reader will become a mathematician as I did, but every reader will benefit from the power this book will give you over numbers, whether you are still in school or ready to impress your grandchildren.

The cartoon style watercolor illustrations in warm tones are well-designed, amusing, and expressive, with a variety of perspectives to add interest. All of the figures have a short, childish look which makes them less menacing. Goliath, a burly loudmouth with spiky red hair and beard, is a satisfying bully, toppling like a felled tree and looking quite peaceful in death. David is shown strumming his harp amid a sea of smiling sheep, bopping a lion about to pounce on a lamb, carrying food to his older brothers in the army, dropping Goliath with a well-aimed stone, and being hailed as a hero by the Israelite soldiers. David and the Giant is a delightful book. It tells the storyof David and Goliath in a way that has our son captivated and theartwork is bright and interesting. We have been searching for bible story books that would engage and interest our 2 1/2 year old for sometime. We have finally found a real winner! I highly recommend this book!

Perfect for a beginning reader!

The story of David and Goliath is well told and Biblical in this book for children. But what's really great is the blend between it being accurate, and also it being an easy reader! It was perfect for my little 5 year old who I am teaching to read. Highly recommend it to parents and homeschoolers alike!

My daughter had this book memorized at 3 because she liked it so much. She has since grown up and now I read it to my preschool class. It is one of their favorites too. They would have me read it every day for a month (and sing the song of course!).

About the Author
Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia. They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art. They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art. During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory. When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines. After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy. Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt. It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears."

Stan and Jan planned all of their books together. They both wrote the stories and created the pictures. They continued to live outside of Philadelphia in the country. There are now over 300 Berenstain Bears books.

A Favorite at Our House

This book is my three-year-old's absolute favorite. Every night we read three books, and this is always one of them. It's not like the other Berenstain Bears books, which I personally find a little wordy and preachy. But this one is done in poetry form, with a very natural cadence that's fun to read aloud and easy for little ones to memorize... and believe me, we have! It's a pretty simple tortoise-and-hare story, where "Little Red" (driven by Brother Bear) "putt-putt-putts" along while the bigger, louder, arrogant cars foil each other with their meanness and over-confidence. Red eventually wins the race, to the great delight of the bears and my son.

I've used this book to teach all kinds of things, from rhyming to colors (the cars are red, orange, yellow, green, and blue) to counting ("four big cars") to prepositions ("over, under, around, and through") to social concepts like persistence, kindness, fairness, and self-assurance. And it's got some great vocabulary that your little ones are unlikely to encounter anywhere else. My three-year-old can now use words like "appetite" and "boastful" correctly in a sentence, thanks to "Big Road Race". I can't recommend this little story highly enough, especially if you've got a boy who loves cars.

One of My Nephew's Favorite Storybooks

My nephew has this book almost memorized, he enjoys the story so much. The race cars are illustrated in bright colors making learning fun. The excitement builds throughout the book, and the story teaches a message about persistence. I would recommend this book for any public or private library.

The Big Race is about four big cars that make fun of a little red car. All of the big cars want to win the race and win the shiny trophy but the big cars lose and little red wins the race and the shiny trophy. If you want to read about never giving up, read this story...Elijah S.

This book is the fifth in the series. "The Mystery of the Green Ghost" precedes this book, and "The Mystery of Skeleton Island" follows. As we learned in previous books, the Three Investigators are Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw and Bob Andrews. Jupiter is the intelligent, sometimes inadvertently arrogant member of the group. Pete Crenshaw is typically the muscle of the group. Pete is usually quite fearless. Bob Andrews, who began the series with a broken leg, works at the library and handles records and research for the group. Bob's cast is off now but his leg is still weak.

The three boys are visiting a museum when crooks stage a daring heist. The adults on the scene react as adults typically do when Jupiter Jones offers their services, and the boys leave the police to solve the mystery. Fortunately, Alfred Hitchcock has another friend with a mystery to solve. His friend is an older lady who wrote many books about gnomes in the past. However, her gnome stories appear to be coming to life. The Three Investigators soon learn that, gulp, the gnomes are real! Thus begins another unusual mystery that will lead the boys into twists and turns and some of the most dangerous situations the boys have encountered.

This story was a good read, but is a bit weaker than previous books in the series. There are two main problems. First, there are two separate mysteries and the connection between the two seemed a bit contrived. Second, Jupiter Jones not only made a mistake or two, but he made several mistakes, and rather than giving Jupiter a bit of humility, the mistakes contributed to the feeling that the Three Investigators were bumbling about more than they were investigating.

I always recommend starting with the first book in this series, "The Secret of Terror Castle," and I make that recommendation even stronger in the case of this book. You will gain a much better impression of the Three Investigators by starting at the beginning rather than with this book.

Quite a few children's mystery book series have become classics. Most people are familiar with Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and Tom Swift. Even the Boxcar Children are relatively well-known. However, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators are well-written books that offer an intelligent, interesting and more contemporary alternative to many of the earlier classic series. Many people recall the earlier series well, but the Three Investigators series, which Robert Arthur wrote and debuted in 1964, has, for now, largely been overshadowed by the other series and generally forgotten. Fortunately, all of these books are available either from Amazon or from other internet sources.

Good but not Arthur's best

While this is far from a bad book, it does fall short of the standard Robert Arthur established in the first four books of this series. The story line was rather loosely put together and failed to merge the two sub-plots to my satisfaction. Honestly, even though I am quite open-minded about the paranormal and such matters, a story centered around "gnomes" begins life with some disadvantages. Be that as it may, it may well be that young readers would be attracted most by the things my adult mind shied away from--after all, what kid doesn't like to read about gnomes? As for the "vanishing treasure" at the heart of this mystery, the means by which it was stolen seemed a little far-fetched to me. As for the investigation, the boys sort of stumble through it. While I guess it is important to show Jupiter Jones as human after all, I frankly don't like seeing the youthful genius miscalculate and overlook clues. Jupe's a little slow in this book, but he fortunately does make up for his mistakes in the end. Finally, while the boys do figure a lot of things out (eventually), the sad fact is that luck, even more so than in the previous books, basically saves them from disaster. Success often depends on luck as well as skill, but the boys just seemed a little too lucky this time.
All in all, it is certainly an enjoyable story. If you've never read a Three Investigators book, I wouldn't start with this one, but I would certainly give it a place on my bookshelf and make a point of reading it after gaining a satisfactory introduction to the young sleuths elsewhere. I personally am reading all of these great books from my childhood in order of publication.

A good one for the under-two crowd

This book was originally published at the height ofthe Watergate scandal. Dr. Seuss sent a copy tohis friend Art Buchwald, crossing out the name "Marvin K. Mooney" and writing in "Richard M. Nixon." Buchwald reprinted the whole thing in his column with the alteration. I find it impossible to read the book without this anecdote in mind! My two-year-old has no such political baggage, and though he has outgrown Marvin K. Mooney now, he enjoyed it for a long, long time. It's underrated.

A 6 year old grabbed this book to read it again!

GET THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CHILD. My foster son's daughter Kayla, 6, read a little more than half of it last night. She loved it. Tonight I picked it up -- and she grabbed it out of my hands, sat down and started reading aloud. As I write this she's in the living room, eagerly reading aloud -- with absolutely no enticement from ANYONE. It's a FUN book with the ryhmes, repeated words, colorful and silly illustrations. And she's still reading it. I had it in my hands for a few seconds, and it was gone! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Fun Way to Learn to Read

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.
To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now! was one of her picks.
Marvin K. Mooney is an excellent choice of a beginning reader after your child has read about 20 books and is ready for something just a little more challenging. The reason I say that is because there are a number of Dr. Seuss's imaginary creatures and inventions in here, so the illustrations don't totally tell you what the words are. For example, you will see a Ga-Zoom, a Bumble-Boat, a Zumble-Zay, and a Crunk-Car. These are, by the way, the most witty and imaginative illustrations as well.
The fun of the story relates to an impatient adult (displayed by an arm and a hand wearing a watch) who wants Marvin K. Mooney to go. Marvin just listens until the end, when he goes. It isn't clear if Marvin K. Mooney is the child of the hand or the child's friend whose parent wants him to leave. It doesn't really matter. I lean towards the latter explanation. But we all know how adults like to say the whole name of a child to let them know the adult is very serious.
Yet, the book isn't serious at all in any other way. The suggestions for leaving are very funny, and take things that could otherwise be scary and make them humorous (like leaving by taking a ride on a lion's tail).
In typical Dr. Seuss fashion, the story is displayed in a rhyme. Like a good beginning reader, there is a lot of repetition to help the young person. "The time has come. The time is now. Just go. Go. GO! I don't care how." The new sentences usually just replace one or two words. The illustrations encourage the child to keep moving ahead by keeping the mood light as she or he struggles with soon-to-be familiar words. Using the imaginative words is good, too, so that a child can learn to recognize new things.
Obviously, you will want to read this book along with your youngster until he or she gets a command of it. You can start at the beginning, and ask you youngster to read with you as soon as the book is memorized. Then, gradually, you can let your youngster take the lead. If the young person falters a bit, you can provide hints.
Have a great time exploring reading together! What else could you be exploring together that would be fun for both of you?
