Tedious; but I'm not sure any biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne would be worth the time.

Incredibly tedious. Author blogged down in detail. Skips back and forth on dates -- on one page you are reading about events on October 1st, and then seven pages later, reading about events on May 25th. The years are seldom provided so you seldom know what year it is. In the chapter describing his death, I can't even tell what year it is, and worse, the author does not even provide the age of Nathaniel at the time of his death. Fortunately one can get all that quickly at wiki.
This may be the most tedious biography about the most boring individual ever: he was a reclusive, obnoxious, indolent, ego-maniac who somehow wrote two, maybe three great books, but always looking for a government appointment to provide a steady salary. He did serve four years as American consult to Liverpool in the end.
If interested in the Hawthorne story, a much better choice would be Megan Marshall's "The Peabody Sisters," c. 2005.
