A Vastly Underrated Book
By MR LIAM B KEELEY
I read "Big Tiger and Christian" when I was in my early teens, and I have never forgotten it. It is an exciting and unusual adventure story about two friends, a German boy and a Chinese, who live in Peking and get caught up in a civil war and are forced to flee across the Gobi. When I found a battered copy in a second hand bookshop in New Zealand about fifteen years ago, I was overjoyed. Even though it was years since I had read the book, I had never fogotten the evocative Mongolian word "Yabonah! (Let's go!).
The book left me with a life-long interest in the Orient in general and Mongolia in particular. I only recently did something I should have done years ago, and made an Internet search to find out more about Fritz Muhlenweg. I was surprised to read that he was on one of Sven Hedin's Central Asian expeditions and that he made two further trips to Mongolia prior to WWII and mastered the language. That certainly goes to explain the authenticity which is obvious on every page. What a remarkable man he must have been. Even though he lived in Hitler's Germany, it is obvious that Muhlenweg was no Aryan supremacist, but had a profound understanding and respect for Mongolia and the Mongolians and the surrounding peoples and cultures. The portraits he draws of the resourceful pair and the people they meet on their epic journey are unforgettable. It is hard to believe that the characters aren't real people. It is hard to have two central characters without one becoming the "sidekick", but Muhlenweg manages it. The sagacious Big Tiger is a strong character in his own right, not at all overshadowed by Christian (aka Compass Mountain). And I reckon Christian met his match in the Mongolian girl Sevenstars. Even the dog (which she gives to him) is memorable. I keep wondering what happened to them. A vastly underrated book, a real classic.

Great Book
By A Customer
I read this as a child and it has stayed with me these many years since, along with a feel for the area and a fascination for the deserts of Central Asia and Mongolia. Rereading it as an adult, it is just as engaging. A marvelous story, well told, it provides a real sense of "place." Years after reading it, when I finally came upon pictures of the people and the area in another context, they all looked EXACTLY as I had imagined they would.

terrific book
By Truman Price Columbia Books
A teriffic children's novel set in 1922, about 2 boys, one European and the other Chinese, who travel across Mongolia during a civil war; based on the stories of Muhlenweg's experiences which he recounted for his own children; and I agree with completely with the other two reviews! Glossary.

A Classic Three Investigators Mystery
By Daniel Jolley
In this second book about the Three Investigators, Robert Arthur has exceeded the achievements of the first. Whereas The Secret of Terror Castle detailed the boys' attempt to prove their investigative powers, The Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot relates the story of the boys' first real case. Having been charged with finding a missing parrot, they soon find themselves intimately involved in a search for a valuable work of art. The story is much fuller and more satisfying than that of the first book. Here we see the case evolve from a seemingly simple, far from dangerous search for a missing pet to an expanded search for seven mysterious parrots (the significance of which are not at first apparent) and finally to a race against an international art thief to acquire a lost masterpiece. Along the way, they face mysterious foreigners working against them, make sense of an enigmatic coded message, and ultimately triumph (albeit somewhat by accident). Admirably, they also go out of their way to generously help a young Mexican immigrant and his uncle establish a more comfortable life for themselves.
This is the Three Investigators at their finest. The mental acumen of Jupiter Jones is put to the test, and once again his mental prowess proves up to the task. For an adult such as myself, some of the obvious clues are not picked up on in as timely a fashion as I would expect, but one must remember that even Jupiter Jones, genius that he is, is only a lad. This book is an unqualified success, eminently enjoyable to both young and old alike. I feel just as I felt twenty years ago upon first reading these books--anxious to read about the boys' next case.

SECOND TIME IS A REAL CHARM!
By M. Grant
The Three Investigators series is MUST reading for all kids. As a teacher I encourage all of my students to delve into the adventures of Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw, and Bob Andrews. None of my young readers has ever been disappointed!
This (the second book in the series) mystery is one of the best. It's a fast moving story that gives readers a lot of mystery and action. All the familiar Investigators charms are here: bad guys galore, red herrings, riddles and clues, chases, and the fun of the revelations in the last pages.
I strongly encourage anyone who reads (no matter their age) to pick up this series. It'll put a smile on your face and make you glad that you shut off the TV and dove into a book.

BUY THIS FOR YOUR KIDS!!!
By A Customer
I know I am not the only reader who grew up thrilling to the adventures of the Three Investigators only to graduate on to Sherlock Holmes as an adult. Now I'm forever reminded of that stuttering parrot (to-to-to-be) whenever Holmes and Watson cross their threshold. Robert Arthur created ideal, escapist reading for kids who love to read (and, believe it or not, for those who don't) when he took us to Rocky Beach, CA. This book stands as one of the very best in the long line of Three Investigator books. Three Investigator fans can only hope that the entire series is reissued! BUY THIS FOR YOUR KIDS!!!

"The story of a cottonwood tree that watched the pageant of history on the Santa Fe Trail where it stood, a landmark to travelers and a peace-medicine tree to Indians, for over 200 years." Booklist, ALA

About the Author
Born in Jackson County, Michigan, in 1900, Holling Clancy Holling graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1923. He then worked in a taxidermy department of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and spent time working in anthropology under Dr. Ralph Linton. During this period, he married Lucille Webster and within a year of their marriage accepted a position as art instructor on the first University World Cruise, sponsored by New York University. For many years, Holling C. Holling dedicated much of his time and interest to making books for children. Much of the material he used was known to him first hand, and his wife, Lucille, worked with him on many of the illustrations.

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, by Virginia Lee Burton

A modern classic that no child should miss. Since it was first published in 1939, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel has delighted generations of children. Mike and his trusty steam shovel, Mary Anne, dig deep canals for boats to travel through, cut mountain passes for trains, and hollow out cellars for city skyscrapers -- the very symbol of industrial America. But with progress come new machines, and soon the inseparable duo are out of work. Mike believes that Mary Anne can dig as much in a day as one hundred men can dig in a week, and the two have one last chance to prove it and save Mary Anne from the scrap heap. What happens next in the small town of Popperville is a testament to their friendship, and to old-fashioned hard work and ingenuity.

The Board Book took out the plot
By D. Moulton
I hate to give this such a low rating, but before you buy the board book edition you need to know that it isn't just shortened, but the whole plot is gone.

Yes Henry B Swap is mentioned, but no mention of a challenge to dig the cellar in one day, or he won't get paid.

No sun high in the sky and being halfway done.

No Henry B Swap saying that since the steam shovel can't get out they don't get paid.

No ending where Henry B. Swap sits in the cellar and smiles in a way that's not mean at all.

If you want the great story, DON'T BUY THE BOARD BOOK!

A childhood favorite
By Mrs. Brandon
This book was one of my favorites as a child and now I love reading it to my son. Mike and Maryanne really show that if you value your things and take care of them they last longer and work harder for you. Now if we could only convince Apple to stop making software updates that render the hardware useless after a year and a half we'll be all set.

Classic Story, Warm, Active Pictures
By A.Trendl HungarianBookstore.com
The cover of this book is the same as my old, dog-eared copy from my childhood 30 years ago. A Caldecott Award winner, the pictures drive the tale as much as the plot. An excellent book from cover-to-cover.

Re-reading it now brings back great memories and fascination of how Mike Mulligan and his beloved steam shovel worked hard to accomplish a fantastic task. Whenever people watched them dig, they always worked a little better and a little faster.

Although it is somewhat dated, and even has Mike smoking at the end (you'd never see a responsible publisher do that today), it holds on to five stars.

A modern John Henry, Mike faces the challenge of new technology. Undaunted, like the famous hammer-driving tall tale hero, he struggles to meet the task. Can he dig a hole faster than the new machine? Can he and his mighty red-metal friend do it by the end of the day?

A great story of perseverence and hard work, I fully recommend "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel." Place it on your shelf next to "Make Way for Ducklings" and "Where the Wild Things Are."

Grade-12 Text...

Miracle! I finally got a copy of Dolciani's "MODERN INTRODUCTORY ANALYSIS", and it is everything I remembered it to be thirty three years ago in my 12th grade College Prep (CP-12) Math course. I still endorse this text as 5-stars! MN

Review of the 1964 and 1967 editions
By Jimmy "Handyman" Jones
"Modern Introductory Analysis" was published in four different versions:

1. Teacher's Manual ("Teacher's Edition" is printed on the spine) - This has a separate teacher's manual (usually on green paper) at the beginning of the book along with teacher notes throughout the rest of the student text. In particular, short answers are provided as dialog to the pedagogical (Why?), which is encountered continuously in the student text. Answers to exercises are in the back of the book.
2. Student Version ("With Odd-Numbered Answers" is printed on the spine) - Answers to odd-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.
3. Student Version ("With Answers" is printed on the spine) - Answers to odd and even-numbered exercises are in the back of the book.
4. Student Version (no additional annotation on the spine) - No answers to exercises.

However, those answers in the back exclude both graphs and proofs. If you desire answers for graphs and proofs, they are included in a separate publication, viz., "Solution Key for Modern Introductory Analysis." Nota bene: the "1980 Impression" (reprint) of the Solution Key, ISBN: 0395255554, is compatible with the 1964 and 1967 editions of the text.

Though its title may suggest otherwise, "Modern Introductory Analysis" does not concern itself with epsilon-delta calculus proofs. Rather, it is a kind of pre-calculus text originally intended for high school seniors who had completed a course in Algebra II and Trigonometry in the previous year. It was the follow-on book to Dolciani's "Modern Algebra and Trigonometry Structure and Method Book 2." There is substantial overlap in the topics of these two books, although "Modern Introductory Analysis" covers them at a higher level. Other topics in "Modern Introductory Analysis" are new material, for example, mathematical induction, vectors, limits, derivatives, transformations and polar coordinates. There are > 4400 exercises. Most of the exercise sets contain at least a handful of proofs to whet your appetite. Considerable added insight is gained by doing these proofs, which serve to extend the basic material. The presentation is axiomatic. Yet, you will find a fair amount of intuitive development preceding the theorems. Some of the theorems are stated without proof, either left as exercises, or with a citation (in the Teacher's Manual) to another book containing a proof.

The 1964 and 1967 editions of the book are nearly identical. The 1964 ed. has several easy-to-spot errors that are fixed in the 1967 ed. However, be advised of certain less obvious errata in the 1964 ed. You may wish to revise your 1964 ed. as follows:

1) Exercise 36, P. 182, "T - S and P - S" should read "T - P and S - P"
2) Exercise 11, P. 312, "the length" should read "a function whose minimum is the length"
3) Exercise 12, P. 312, "what is" should read "let L be" and "(-2, 5)?" should read "(-2, 5). Find a function whose minimum is L."
4) Exercise 13, P. 312, "which for a fixed volume requires the least material (surface area)" should read "of greatest volume having a total surface area of 96Ï€ sq. cm."
5) Exercise 18, P. 313, should read "Solve Exercise 17 if triangle POQ has minimum area."
6) Exercise 34, P. 327, "b = 1" should read "b ≠ 1"
7) Exercise 14, P. 362, "log 2 (base e)" should read "log 4 (base e)"
8) Exercise 23, P. 362, "b = √a " should read "b = a² "
9) Exercise 24, P. 362, "b = ³√a " should read "b = a³ "
10) Exercise 42, P. 424, "csc θ" should read "-csc θ"
11) Exercise 47, P. 424, "sin X1 - sin X2" should read "sin X1 + sin X2"
12) Exercise 41, P. 441, "0 < x < π/2" should read "π < x < 3π/2"
13) P. 451 (also 1967 ed.), "y' = acos x" should read "y' = acos ax " and "y' = -asin x" should read "y' = -asin ax"
14) Exercise 20, P. 453, "a sin(ax + b)" should read "-a sin(ax + b)"
15) P. 461, incorrectly drawn graph. Point A should be in the fourth quadrant.
16) Exercise 18, P. 472, "8 m.p.h." should read "2 m.p.h."
17) Exercise 21, P. 472, "2r(180/n)º" should read "2r sin(180/n)º"
18) Exercise 13, P. 481, "bearing 250º" should read "bearing 265º" and "B and 265º" should read "B and 250º"
19) Exercise 30, P. 493, change ending to "... such that r* = f(θ*) and for some integer n, either r* = g(θ* + 2nπ) or -r* = g(θ* + π + 2nπ).
20) Exercise 26, P. 502, "θ1 = θ2." should read "θ1 = θ2 + 2nπ for some integer n."
21) Exercise 29, P. 524, " 5x² - 4y² " should read " 3x² - y² "
22) Exercise 11, P. 536, " 9x² + 24xy + 6y² = 0; θ = Sin‾¹ (-4/5)" should read " 2x² + 3xy + 2y² = 7; φ = Ï€/4"
23) Exercise 4, P. 541, " x² - 3xy + 3y² + 6y = 7" should read " 7x² + 6xy + 15y² = 144"
24) Exercise 5, P. 541, " y² - 4xy - 4y + 8x = 0" should read " 8y² + 6xy - 26y -12x + 11 = 0"
25) Exercise 6, P. 541, " x² - xy - x + y - 2 = 0" should read " x² + xy + y² = 8"
26) Exercise 16, P. 546 (also 1967 ed.), change to " 20x² - 24xy + 27y² + 20x - 55y - (4615 / 396) = 0"
27) Exercise 33, P. 568, "rv = vr" should read "If rv = vs and v ≠ 0, then r = s."
28) Exercise 7, P. 616, "n - 1" should read "r - 1"
29) Exercise 14, P. 616, "12 or more." should read "12 or more balls."

Great Series
By Ex-Buyer
This text, along with all the Dolciani books by Houghton Mifflin were the corner stones of any high school math program in the 60's-70's and early 80's. This book particularly was the book that I learned pre-calculus from, and made me become a math major. The books were literate in their context, never watered down, but not so abstract that a high school student couldn't read and follow. What makes this book so unique is the fact that mathematical induction is introduced in Chapter 3 and is carried throughout the book. No other precalculus book prior or since has used this approach. Mathematical induction is a proof driven treatment for the topics which follow. It makes the students think in a logical manner and enables them, by proof, to understand the full argument of why certain "things happen" in math as they do. The Teacher's Edition's were the best of any series (until Houghton Mifflin changed the format, and made them less teacher friendly). I still have 2 TE's of this book and the solutions key, and still refer to it when I need to...it beats any precalculus book out today. Once Dr. Dociani passed away, the entire Houghton Mifflin series went down the tubes, their current texts DO NOT hold muster to this old classic!!!

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 Donnelly gives simple details about how King Tutankhamen was buried and the ancient Egyptians beliefs about death. The story then skips ahead to the 1800s, when Howard Carter's frustrating five-year search for Egyptian treasure finally resulted in his discovery of the young pharoah's tomb. Although there's little new information here, these true tales of mummies and ancient treasure in an easy-reader format should prove popular. Ventura and Ceserani's In Search of Tutankhamum (Silver Burdett, 1985) provides a more detailed account of Carter's struggles, and its illustrations are superior to the standard textbook drawings found here. But its nice to see photos of the Egyptian finds included in this book, which will help readers share the excitement that Carter must have felt when his dream of finding an ancient tomb finally came true. Good, but not as engaging as the author's other books
By Eileen Palsson
My 7-year-old read this (with a little help). I thought it was appropriate for the target age level. This book contains both photographs and illustrations, and we enjoyed the photographs more, because they gave a much-needed sense of reality to the story. We also appreciated that the book explained how to pronounce the hard words like Tutankhamen "(too-tonk-AH-men)". And as a parent it was nice to see it pointed out that Howard Carter's stubborn search for Tut's tomb paid off in the end.

Still, we did not find this book as interesting as other books by Judy Donnelly (such as "Moonwalk" and "The Titanic"). It could be a matter of our particular interests, but after being blown away by those other two books of hers, this one kind of fell flat.

If your child is already interested in the subject matter (Tut's tomb, mummies in general, and the beliefs of ancient Egyptians), then this may be a really good book to get. If not, then I don't think "Tut's Mummy" is going to awaken that interest.

Hidden Treasure - Secret Tombs - a Mummy!
By Charles Flemming
Great little book, perfect for the early reader. My then-first grader loved this story of the death and burial of an ancient Pharaoh and his subsequent discovery in the 20th Century by Lord Carrington. Chock full of photos and beautiful, almost impressionistic illustrations. Large print, easy to read.

Tut's Mummy proved to be a valuable part of our Egyptian study. Oh... My daughter's older siblings (then in the fifth and sixth grades) liked the book too!

This book was a recommended resource in The Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Egypt (Greenleaf Guides).

Better than I thought
By Will Riddle
I'm a super-picky homeschooler so I really have a love/hate relationship with ancient Egypt resources. I debated for awhile before buying this book because I have been really disenchanted with most of the books out there on Tut and mummies. But because so many curriculums include it, and it was so cheap, I went for it. It's worth the purchase.

The book is the story of Tut's tomb being discovered by Howard Carter. My third grader really enjoyed this story, even though it was below his grade level. While I wasn't thrilled with the acknowledgement of "the mummy's curse," the author handled it in a way that made it seem dumb as opposed to legitimate, so I appreciated that. It also didn't show any illustrations of Tut's decayed corpse, which many children's books seem to love including. So I appreciated that too. Actually, I compared the most recent version of this book to the old version, and I liked the pictures of the old one better.

As non-fiction goes, the text is suspenseful and interesting. And it provides a necessary part of the Tut story in an easy to handle way.

Review
"The secret of Mr. Marshall's success lies not just in the freshness of his sense of the ridiculous, but in the carefulness of his control and editorial judgment." The New York Times

About the Author
James Marshall (1942–1992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious children’s books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a master’s degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his life’s work as one of the finest creators of children’s books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children.

From AudioFile
Michael Moss's jazzy music highlights the humor in this read-along featuring two of the most famous friends in children's literature, hippos George and Martha. The five stories playfully deliver important life lessons. George learns honesty when Martha catches him pouring pea soup into his loafers rather than hurt her feelings by not eating it. George learns about respect when Martha clouts him with her bathtub when he peeks in on her. The characterizations by George Loeb make the hippo pair seem even more human. A bouncy sound signals the page-turns, adding to the fun. S.W. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Missed the mark in my view
By Salley
I bought this book based on the high ratings and glowing reviews and was very disappointed. The examples don't appear to be well-chosen, nor are do the lessons seem well-taught. Here are my issues with it:
The first story teaches that you should always tell your friends the truth. The parable the author uses is a bad example. George tells a white lie to avoid hurting Martha's feelings. White lies can be a good thing, and the complete truth is sometimes unkind.
Another story is supposed to teach the importance of privacy. In it, George, fond of peeping, offends Martha when he peeps through her bathroom window while she's bathing. She tells him: there is such a thing as privacy.
In one story, when Martha, preoccupied with admiring herself in the mirror, is told by George that she'll look like a silly picture he has drawn of her, she resolves never to look in the mirror again.
Darling illustrations, but dull stories that don't quite teach the lessons I want to teach.

Ultimately missed the point
By J. E. Dyer
. . . but still worth a Cold War student's time for its wide-ranging source material, and representative perspective.

Yergin's book is long on pointed inference and short on rational argument. He makes his points primarily by choosing his adjectives carefully. The principal impression one is left with is that American policy started the Cold War by misinterpreting Stalin after FDR's demise, and hence sentenced the United States to managing, in perpetuum, a "national security state." (FDR, by contrast, dealt with Stalin as one great power actor to another, unburdened by the "messianism" and "Wilsonian utopianism" with which American foreign policy is so often tagged.)

Certainly the proximate origin of the Cold War lay in the fact that the United States was uneasy with Stalin occupying all of eastern Europe, and objected directly to his attempts to set up, through armed force, Communist regimes in Iran, Turkey, and Greece. Yergin implies that because Stalin approached these efforts methodically and carefully, and drew back when confronted, Truman overreacted in accusing him of trying to take over too much of Europe and Asia. Here Yergin suffers a common myopia among Cold War analysts: an apparent inability to see the link between American pushback, or lack of it, and how far the Soviets chose to go. He prefers to interpret both the US and the USSR as actors motivated mainly by confused internal urges, or so one gathers from the profusion of telling adjectives in his narrative.

Yergin does do the signal service of charting America's course from a nation that pursued "interests," as in the pre-WWII era, to one that based its fundamental posture in the world on permanently-existing "threats." At least one reviewer (Edward M. Luttwak, in "The Train of History," Commentary, August 1977) considers Yergin's conclusions here vacuous and overblown, observing that a "national security state" is something every state is, by definition. But Yergin's contribution is really in pointing out that American policy was at one time made relatively free of that European-style premise; it was the menace of Soviet expansionism and the Cold War that forced us to adopt it. (John Lewis Gaddis' 1982 book, Strategies of Containment, has a much better theoretical discussion of the distinction between basing national policy on interests, and basing it first and foremost on threats.)

Luttwak's review of this book is superb, if you can get your hands on it. (It's collected in his 1980 book Strategy and Politics.) He takes Yergin to task rather severely for including a large amount of "human-interest" material, such as the weather and ceremonial arrangements when FDR arrived at Yalta; and ultimately describes the book as "free of any trace of genuine scholarship." I would give Yergin a little slack on the human-interest front, however. I wouldn't have missed for the world his summary on page 47 of the following exchange between Mrs. Robert Taft and Senator Arthur Vandenberg, then the leading Republican foreign policy spokesman in the Senate:

"Once, urged on by her husband, Mrs. Robert Taft tried to "butter Van up" at a dinner party, but was forced to report that she found the task impossible - `he buttered himself so thoroughly that I really couldn't find a single ungreased spot.' "

Anecdote, and 100 pages of notes and bibliography, make Yergin's book worth your time.

A Convincing Treatment
By conjunction
As someone who tends to be critical of what is difficult to describe as other than American Imperialism, I patiently read this book trying to find the point at which the Yanks blew it, sank into paranoia and overkilled on trying to wipe out communism.

The review by Mr Dyer suggests that Yergin implies the USA's diplomats were actually unnecessarily paranoid and that the USSR were never really up for war.

However this is not my reading of Yergin's text. Yergin often suggests that 'maybe' the Russians weren't quite as dangerous as the USA thought they might be, but never raises any argument to counter the one posed by George Kennan and later President Truman and the whole US political establishment that as Russia believed in world revolution they had to be treated as a threat.

In fact reading this book the only real areas of doubt about the course the Americans planned concern the Vietnam war. Apparently the decision to give Vietnam back to France at the end of the war was made against the advice of the section of the State Department responsible for SouthEast Asia, and in his 1990 epilogue Yergin notes that post Vietnam Americans came to acknowledge that local conditions and interests may sometimes be more relevant than global strategy. A lesson they were later to forget.

So my reading of Yergin, is that despite his rather coy suggestions that the Russians weren't really all that bad, and with the exception that maybe Vietnam was a mistake, his text is really saying the Cold War could not have been avoided.

As other reviews have suggested Yergin relies heavily on personal anecdotes. This is history through the lens of the recorded writings, interviews, and statements of the American and sometimes British personnel. Any views on Russia are filtered through Western perceptions.

Reviewer Dyer quotes Luttwak as saying Yergin has no scholarship, but his consideration of the thoughts of Allied politicians is measured and thoughtful, and this is a convincing treatment of the subject.

Still the best account of the origins of the Cold War
By A Customer
Is this book a 'classic'? If it isn't then I don't know what would qualify for the name. A breath of fresh air when it was first released, it quite nicely debunked the existing interpretations of Liberal National, New Left and (rather fratricidally) the earlier Realist historians. It is meticulously researched and easy to read - it deserves a place on the shelf of every person with an interest in the international affairs of the 20th century, especially as it is now within the price range of most buyers.

Oh sure it LOOKS cute and cuddly...
By E. R. Bird
In the November/December 2004 issue of Horn Book Magazine (a title that discusses children's literature with aplomb) there was an article in which an author sobbed at the lack of positive hunting images in picture books and children's novels. I thought through this argument, but since I don't really come from a rural hunting family myself, I guess I never considered this to be a bad thing. Thoughts of this nature surfaced yet again when I picked up Lynd Ward's 1952 Caldecott winning picture book, "The Biggest Bear". A surprisingly sly cautionary tale about the dangers that accompany removing wild animals from their habitats, the book definitely shows a hunting happy family in a positive light. Fortunately, it also considers the consequences that come when you set off to kill something for no reason.

Johnny Orchard's deeply ashamed. Take a look at any barn in the urrounding area and what do you find? A bearhide hanging on its side. Take a look at the Orchard's barn and what do you find there? Nuthin'. While Johnny listens with awe to the tales other men tell of finding and killing bears, his own grandfather ADMITS that on the one occasion he saw a bear he ran as fast as his legs could carry him away from it. Taking matters into his own hands, little Johnny picks up his gun and goes into the forest to kill the biggest bear he can find. As it turns out, the biggest bear he can find is not very big at all. Just a baby. With new eyes Johnny adopts the cuddly furball and takes it into his home. Before long, however, it becomes clear that this is not a bear that is meant to live in a home and Johnny must make the ultimate sacrifice to keep it away.

I'll give away a little of the ending here so as to put your mind at rest. No, Johnny does not pull an "Old Yeller" on his fuzzy companion. He tries to though. Fortunately he's stopped at the last minute and the bear is taken to a zoo to live. Happy ending for all, despite the fact that we're talking about 1950s type tiny-zoos. This is an excellent book for any kid that has ever wanted to have an inappropriate pet of their very own, whether it be wild baby raccoons, rabbits, bears, or foxes. The story shows how domesticated animals can be more trouble than they're worth.... especially bears.

So Ward's book has a clear cut message and a delightful narrative voice. And how're the pictures? Well, they're top notch. Drawn entirely in black and white (with undulating shades of gray around the shadows and details) the pictures in this story are too lifelike to be called cartoony and too cartoony to be called lifelike. Plus, the action sequences in this tale are realistic enough to convince you of their fast pace. Personally, I was most impressed by the facial expressions of the bear. I don't want to give you the impression that Mr. Ward has done anything but make this bear appear vividly bear-like. Still, sometimes the animal gets looks in his eyes that strike you as funny. There's a part where Johnny has attempted to free the bear, only to find it in his backyard a day or two later. In one of these instances the bear appears behind a row of pigs who're poised over a slops trough. The pigs look disgruntled and a little worried that their food is about to be taken from them. The bear, on his part, has a world-weary expression of an animal that could patiently wait for food forever. I place it amongst one of the greatest picture book illustrations in the history of the form.

Unlike other old-timey Caldecott winners like "Make Way For Ducklings" or "The Snowy Day", "The Biggest Bear" has been mostly forgotten. This is a real shame since it's a truly interesting story that has a lot to say to us, even today. It's not flashy and colorful and it's method of spinning a tale won't knock your socks off. It's just a really enjoyable story about a boy, his bear, and taking responsibility for your actions. A great tale to this very day.

I came online to purchase this book for my daughter and thought I would check out what this book meant to other people and was shocked by the sensitivity that is present in today's society. Having grown up being read this book 25 years ago I carry lessons from this book to this day. I haven't read it since then, listen to what I got from it:
Johnny brings a wild animal into the community against the better judgement of family and neighbors. The bear is lovable but a nuisance animal and Johnny is forced to take the responsibility (shoot the bear) even though it is something he really, really doesn't want to do. (At this point I would interject, I always felt Johnny was older than I as he was allowed to carry guns. My parents always taught me to respect firearms. I was not allowed to be around guns without supervision until I was 16, even then it was only with permision.) The bear being saved by the zoo taught me that he didn't really check all of his options before trying to take care of the situation. I can still hear my mom telling me to "make sure and look into things, maybe you can figure out something better."
In a nutshell, I got responsibility for my actions, do all my research to resolve problems, and wild animals are wild animals.
To stick with me as long as it has, it must be entertaining and well written. I can't wait to pass it on to my little girl.

Another Alaskan Family Loves This Book

Our 2 1/2 year old son had the words memorized within a week of checking this book out from the library. It's wonderful. We live in a rural community where the black bear is a respected, everyday part of our lives. Just yesterday I shooed one away from our porch; problems are not common. Yes, we do hunt and provide food for our families, just as in the story. This book is wonderful and captures in text and artwork the many aspects of living rurally. It is truly a treasured book in our home.

Anne Sexton never failed to produce amazing poetic works. This volume of poetry houses the last of her work. Some of the poems are still raw and unpolished and show the working of Anne's mind. Captivating work.
