From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6 This fresh, substantial prose anthology of modern humor will send middle-grade readers scurrying to the library shelves for more. The table of contents reads like a roll-call of popular authorsJudy Blume, Richard Peck, Robert Newton Peck, Betsy Byars, Beverly Cleary, Roald Dahl, Thomas Rockwell, and morewith a few surprises thrown in: Garrison Keillor, Delia Ephron, even a Bob & Ray script. Episodes vary greatly in length, from two to about two dozen pages; the print is comfortably large; and Zelinsky's rubbery, expressive drawings not only bind the collection together while setting individual moods for each story, but also, where appropriate, subtly evoke the original illustrations. Although most of the extracts stand alone, Pollack adds an introductory sentence or two where needed. Several tried-and-true entries (``The Elephant's Child,'' for instance, and Thurber's ``The Moth and the Star'') provide historical depth. Outstanding booktalk material, too. Why I love books
By cknyc
This book is singlehandedly responsible for why I majored in English in college. I got it for my 7th birthday and read it cover to cover in days and loved it. The stories are hilarious, all targeted at young kids, some from truly classic and unknown chapter books (for example, Half Magic). I made my parents take me to the library immediately and picked up most of them in full form. Honestly this and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle are indelible parts of my childhood - 30 years later I still remember them. I just bought two copies for my nieces and one for myself -- I read my original so many times we had to staple the chapters back together.

Great Introduction to Modern Classics
By Amazon Customer
We originally got a broken down copy of this book from a friend. It had seen better days and had pages falling out all over the place. Soon we understood why, as it became well-used and loved by our own children. After a section of pages finally went missing, we decided to replace it with a new copy. You would have thought it was Christmas. Containing excerpts from, "Harriet the Spy", "Beezus and Ramona", "Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing", "How to Eat Fried Worms" and many other titles many 30 somethings will remember from their own childhoods. The quality of the selected material is high and I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Lots of laughs, Great for Read Alouds
By Amanda M Sponder
This book is great for read-alouds. Especially in a classroom setting. As the library teacher, I rarely had enough time to go through longer books with the students who would visit the library once a week, but really enjoyed picking stories from this book. (And of course, those books usually saw increased circulation after introducing them to the students). A favorite included here for my 4th grade students was always the excerpt from Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing.
