Birds of Texas Field Guide

This is an old standby in my family. I had owned a later publication from the mid-to-late 60s that had a mishap relating to a cooking incident (my book is always handy in the kitchen to identify the birds at the feeders, but I won't go into that). Needless to say, it had to be thrown out. Replacing it was impossible locally, therefore, I was very happy to find it on Amazon. I really prefer this book, not only because of my familiarity with it, but because it's specific to the birds and migrant birds that inhabit the widely varied regions of Texas, and also includes a list of accidental sightings that are rare to the state. It has both full-colored plates and text that offers more information on each bird. The colored plates are not photos, but artist drawings, which I much prefer because the color schematics of the birds can be much more emphatically displayed while also allowing the placement of arrows noting key field marks of each bird. A brief description of each bird is given to coincide with the plates while more detailed information is given in the text along with roadside silhouette shapes and two area maps illustrating the eastern and western regions of the state.

I was referred to this book as a very complete book on Texas birds. I wasn't disappointed. This was commissioned by the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife intending to be a very inclusive book. It had descriptions of visitors from Mexico that other books don't, (Mexican Duck with the details to tell it from a Mottled Duck). The only thing I didn't like is that the illustrations tend to be dark. That's a printing problem, I think. Well worth getting. The fact that it was first published before I was born has no bearing on its relevance other than bird names that have changed over time.
