A good book, overall.

I've always liked the story. It's about a princess who escapes from her evil stepmother, and takes refuge in a cottage in the woods, where its residents do all they can to protect her from the queen. But the girl not only ignores the advice given by them, she's dim enough to fall for the queen's trick when she comes disguised as an old hag. She's not a feminist icon, but she's charming all the same. Since it's a Disney book, the ending is more or less the same as 'Sleeping Beauty''s. A prince comes along, and recognises her as the scullery maid he fell in love with earlier on, and so he kisses her (as opposed to the original Grimm ending where she comes back to life by coughing up the piece of poisoned apple), she opens her eyes and allows herself to be swept off her feet to a castle. This princess knew this would happen. The best I've got to say about this is that the illustrations are beautifully realised, so kudos to Fernando Guell for making this book all the more enjoyable. I had this book as a child, and I love his use of line and colour. So kudos, once again.

Snow White done right..

Since this is a book taken from Disney's film version, I can see where much change was made. The illustrations are beautiful, more colorful, brighter than the original film. Everything seems to be in order: from the Evil Queen sending the huntsman to kill Snow White (he was unsuccessful) to the Queen transforming into the old witch, handing the apple to Snow White and the dwarves taking care of her until the Prince comes and kisses her awake. Lovely little tale. We read it on a nightly basis at our home. My two year old fancies himself a dwarf..Happy.

One of the editors of this anthology, Charles Curtis, had commanded a US Navy destroyer during WWI. Observing that soldiers are nearly always idle in war, Curtis conceived of an anthology of passages from the nonfiction of recent centuries, that soldiers could read while marking time between rare battles. Throughout his busy professional life, Curtis continued to read widely, copying passages he loved into notebooks by hand. He also wrote several books on the law and public affairs.

When WWII broke out, Curtis approached Houghton Mifflin, which agreed to publish such an anthology; thus the Practical Cogitator was born. One of HM's editors, Ferris Greenslet, became a coeditor. The Practical Cogitator did not appear until the last months of WWII. A second edition came out just as the Korean War broke out. Greenslet's son-in-law prepared the 1962 third edition.

The PC is the fruit of an awesome collaboration between two equally brilliant persons whose differences nicely complemented each other. Greenslet was a humanist and connoisseur educated at Columbia, rather the introvert. Curtis was a Harvard-educated lawyer who read in several languages, and who knew something about science and business; he was the more extroverted of the two. This book is no highbrow Bartlett's Quotations, and is not suited as an anthology for university instruction. But I would not hesitate to include on a course reading list essays that happen to be excerpted in the PC.

Were a foreigner to ask me "What is American civilization and why might it be valuable?" I would reply: read the Practical Cogitator. If I were forced to spend the rest of my life with but one book, this would be it.

One of the very best

I first purchased this book in the Yale University bookstore as an enlisted sailor in the mid-'70s, hoping to someday go to college and looking for inspiration. This book has been with me ever since. The section entitled "He Lives With His Fellows" taught me more than any other single source about how to develop into an adult in the midst of conflict and indecision.

This book led me into the Great Books Program at St John's College, and then two further degrees from Stanford. Now, as director of an Intensive Care Unit in an academic medical center, I recognize that this book is a measurable part of my success. I still have my original and well-worn copy, with milestones in my career noted inside the front cover. I've known how influential this book has been.

This book went with me to Iraq for ten months, to central African refugee camps, to Bosnia three times, to the Katrina response in the floodwaters of New Orleans, to Korea and Colombia, and I'm here buying two more copies for my daughters. This small volume can change lives.

Nice pocket sized book

I love dinosaurs, and this book brought back so many childhood memories when I used to draw dinosaurs all over the house and play in the mud with my toys. It's a tiny book that you can easily take with you. Some of the dinosaur information is outdated, but the content and story line is solid - especially if you're a little kid. :)

I read this book as a child and loved it. The pictures are beautiful and the story enchanting. We bought this book to read to our children while they listened to the music by Prokofiev. Such a fun way to study music and Russian culture!

Great book!

Since this book is older, I was concerned in buying the cheapest one available. I was concerned that it would be damaged due to age and use. I will be using this in my music class so I needed a book in decent condition. The book was exactly as described and I was not disappointed at all. A Christmas Classic - One of the best Berenstain Bears books

This might be the single best Berenstain Bears books ever written and sadly this version has been out of print for quite a while. Luckily, there are a lot of them for sale used right here on Amazon (and elsewhere).

The story has beautiful illustrations and a fun, touching story that rhymes - which makes it perfect for reading aloud. The story never gets old and tells a great story about the true Christmas spirit.

This book was written in 1980, just before the mass production of the Berenstain Bears book series led to a diminished quality of the writing and illustrating.

This is a true Christmas classic and a classic Berenstain Bears story. Do yourself a favor and buy a copy!

BEST Christmas book ever!

I just love this book. I read it (was a library book) first to my daughter when she was only 3 and found myself tearing up at the end because of the beautiful moral of this story. I had to find my own book and found many used books out there since this is no longer in print and very rare. It came in great condition! I look forward to reading it everytime!

Sweet story

Perfect for reading to our kiddos on Christmas Eve. Great morals, as always. Our boys are 3 & 6 and loved this story. A little longer than other Berenstain Bears books, but perfect with a cup of cocoa in front of the fire.

Don't Buy the Board Book Edition

This 1 star review is for the board book edition -- certainly the harcover gets 5+ stars; it is a classic that should be in every child's library. But why does Random House insist on abridging its catalog to get them to fit into board book format? The board book strips down a story that's already quite simple, and takes all the flavor and joy out of it.
Bottom line: if you want to enjoy "Are You My Mother?" go and buy the "complete" hardcover edition. If you need something sturdy that your child is going to teethe on, buy a Zwiekback biscuit.

Perfect for the smallest child!

Are you looking for a good book to introduce a small child to the joys of reading? Then this one is a great one!
Long before I realized that babies are little sponges, someone gave me this book for my then first-born one year old (1968! ) Since then, this book has been a staple for all my children, the youngest now 8.
I have read to each child, before they were one - only one isn't as fond of reading as the others, but even he enjoys a good book now and again.
This book is the perfect book to introduce little ones to the joys of reading. The words are few and small, and the question is one of interest to little ones who are still trying to sort out what is going on in this new-to-them world.
The little bird falls from her nest while mother bird is out getting worms. She (or he) goes to every animal she sees and asks, "Are you my mommy?"
This simple story keeps the child's interest, because the little ones are concerned about what happens if they separate from a parent or caregiver.
In the end, of course (I doubt that this is giving away the story!) the bird finds the mother and all is right.
If you want your children or grandchildren to enjoy reading, this book is an excellent start. Expect to have to read it over and over, so well that you both will have it memorized!

A Beloved Part of Our Family

My son is a big, hulking, almost-16-year-old, but to this day, when he sees construction equipment, he says, "Look, Mom! It's a Snort!"
"Are You My Mother" was the book my son never tired of. All through his early toddler years, it was his bedtime favorite, his naptime favorite, a comfort when he was tearful, and his best friend. How many times did he curl up on my lap with his blankie and his thumb while I rocked him and read this book?
The "plot" concerns a baby bird who hatches while the mother bird is out of the nest. Baby sets out to find his mother, and asks everything and everyone he sees, "Are You My Mother?" The "Snort" reference comes when the baby bird asks a huge piece of digging equipment, and..."The big thing just said SNORT!" This is what my son waited for throughout the book...he laughed every single time. And still does.
In the end, the birdie finds his mommy. The perfect, secure ending for a small child who wants reassurance before bed, or any time. This book is a classic. My son still has it, and I know he will read it to his own children some day. I hope I am there to see it.

This is a simplified version, NOT the original

This is not the version of the book that I read (over and over) as a kid. It is heavily simplified. The back even says "Classics made simpler and sturdier for younger readers". I get the desire to do this, but I was very disappointed not to receive the book I thought I was getting for my friend's daughter. (It doesn't even have a single instance of the repeated "Do you like my hat?" dialogue that made the original version of this book so distinctive in my memory.)

I mainly just wish that it had been possible to tell from the description of the product that this did not contain all of the original text and pictures, so that I would've known to buy a different version.

Would not recommend

I was very disappointed to find this book is NOT the Go, Dog, Go! story we all grew up with. I will keep it and read it to my grand daughter but I'm not terribly happy about it and WILL go find the whole story. I guess they thought a toddler wouldn't have the attention span necessary to sit through the whole version. UGH! Just not true! Even if they got distracted, that's part of their learning process. I wish I hadn't bought this one.

A Great Childrens Book!

This book is about Spike puting on magic pony shoes. Spike thought he would have a great day because all the little ponies were outside playing. He went to join them all but he was just no good. Spike foudn the horse shoes and put them on. He disapears so no little ponies can see him. The story is an exellent book for kids to learn lessons.

My First Lincoln Book

I am 38 years old and my father bought me this book when we visited the Lincoln birthplace when I was approximately 6 years old. I still read it from time to time. This book started me on a lifetime desire to learn more about the man called "Abe". The book is well written and takes you from birth to his assassination (which is taken up by less than a page.) I found it fascinating when I was younger and, as I said, I still read it now and then. I have over 50 books on Lincoln and this is still one of my favorites. If you have a young son or daughter that likes to read, let them try this one, I think they might just do as I did the other day. My father is now 72 and visited and I showed him the book and thanked him again as I recalled the day he bought it for me.
I would heartily recommend this book for anyone, but it is geared toward children. (I would actually say from 9-12) depending on how much they like to read.

It is one of those vivid and accurate biographies, which can not become old-fashioned with the years. The book describes the early boyhood and young manhood of Abraham Lincoln. It describes the long and not easy way, which Lincoln had to overcome to stay in history as the great and humane American President of the Civil War Years. I underlined the facts, which impressed me the most. Young Abe was the best wrestler for many miles along the midwestern coast. Several years ago I wondered: why sports should be important for politicians? They should be bright in something else - intellectwise. But now I understand that you have to be either in boxing or in karate or in wrestling like Lincoln when you are young. This will help you to overcome numerous defeats when you become older and go into political fights without any rules. Another fact from Lincoln's biography shocked me. He would walk miles to borrow a book. There was no Internet; there were no even libraries in the area where he lived. Why would he go for miles and I am sure it was not always easy for him. How many of my friends would go for miles to borrow a book? I do not know. In addition, the second thing about it. His parents were illiterate; they could not write or read. How and from whom he would know that you have to read books? I found out that one person influenced Abe a lot. That person was his teacher named Zachariaah Riney. From Riney Lincoln got a habit to read aloud to him and would do it for the rest of his life. The third fact from his biography is amazing. Lincoln read every newspaper, which he could find. I ask myself: do I always read New York Times, which I find at home? Alternatively, I prefer to watch cartoons with my brother Kevin. When I think about all of this I come to a sad conclusion: I will never become the President of the great country. However, I hope that at least I will become the Chief of Justice of the Supreme Court. The will power, this is what comes to my mind when I think about Lincoln while reading Sterling North's book. The life was not easy for him. However, he never gave up. I know that life is not easy for anyone. However, most people give up. In addition, they do not become the great Presidents. I was trying to find out what else influenced Lincoln and helped him to become what he became in the future. I am sure it was the environment of Cucumber Trail. It was a small place but Abe could see a larger world from his cabin. All sorts of travelers were passing by their cabin telling all kinds of stories about their life. Pioneers seeking for new land soldiers and even slaves in chains. It reminds me about the city where I live - New York. You can meet the entire world here and know much more about life if you are willing to talk to all these people like young Lincoln used to do. In addition, the last thing, which determined the future of Lincoln, was that his family moved a bit. This was giving to him an exciting feeling of constant adventure. I am sure that this feeling is extremely important for any politician otherwise he becomes and old and boring mosquito who fly's around and disturbs people with his monotonous songs.

The Years Leading Up to Lincoln's Presidency

When I was in the upper elementary grades, we thought of Landmark Books as the books the school gave as prizes when we really wanted Nancy Drew or the Black Stallion. Now, as an older adult and a retired teacher, I have a much more charitable view. Landmark Books are excellent works of non-fiction for older children dealing with historical persons or events and often written by well-known and respected authors of the mid-twentieth century. This biography of Abraham Lincoln is by Sterling North, author of Rascal and many other fine books. It deals with Lincoln's youth and the years leading up to his election as President. The book has 178 pages, and Lincoln leaves Springfield for Washington on page 172. His Presidency, the Civil War, and his assassination are summarized in the last six pages. This is intentional because the purpose of the book is to cover the prairie years, and Mr. North does an outstanding job summarizing some of the most eventful years in our country's history in a mere six pages. But I was left wanting more of what made Lincoln a great leader. I still think, however, that older children would benefit from reading this book, and then they could move on to other books with more information about Lincoln's Presidency.

My twin grandsons at 25 months love this book. They try to everything that Big Bird says to do.

Lots of fun for the kids

This is a fun version of the old game Simon Says, where Big Bird is Simon. It is your typical fun/educational Sesame Street Book with the bonus of actually being able to play along with the book. It helds children associate words with actions, like "pat your head". Although it rate for 4-8 year olds, my 3 year old niece loved it. She had everyone in the family reading it to her and playing along. She also took it to nursery school and her whole class (and the teacher) enjoyed it. I am told they read it again and again and are still playing "Big Bird Says".

Colors are great, the words are big. Great for any toddler or sesame street fan. Plenty of pages to entertain but no so many to where a child will get bored. It's a great attention grabber, especially since it encourages interaction.

Probably will buy more.
