About the Author
Bernard Waber was the beloved author/illustrator of more than thirty picture books, including Courage, Ira Sleeps Over, and Do You See a Mouse? With the publication of The House on East 88th Street in 1962, his Lyle,  Lyle Crocodile series of books became a mainstay of children's literature. A Literary Landmark plaque commemorating the adventures of this endearing New York City reptile can now be found on East 88th Street and Bernard Waber's artwork is the subject of a traveling retrospective exhibit, curated by the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. One of my top five favorite children's books

My older siblings and I never forgot this childhood charmer. In fact, my 47-year-old sister still reads it out loud occasionally for anyone willing to listen. It's funny enough for adults to enjoy, and not in a silly manner at all. I always remember Arthur's argument with his mother over eating the black ants (good), and the red ants (healthy but taste awful). My other favorite scene is when Arthur is off to school one morning, but has to return over and over to run upstairs for something he forgot. Whenever a similar situation happens in real life with someone I know...or with myself...I think of Arthur and his mother saying to him, "What did you forget this time Arthur?"

Fun, poignant, and brilliantly illustrated

I loved this book when I was a 5 year old some 30 years ago, and now my son loves it also. It's fun and clever, and the illustrations hark back to a different era when 6-color printing wasn't necessary to hold a child's attention--this one uses just two colors--and yet the illustrations are wonderful.
Of course, I may be a bit biased because my name is Arthur!

About the Author
Bill Peet was the author of 34 books published by Houghton Mifflin. One of these, BILL PEET: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, was named a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book. All of Bill Peet’s books published by Houghton Mifflin Company, including his first book for children published in 1959, HUBERT'S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, remain actively in print today.

In both his career as an author and illustrator of children’s books and in his work as sketch artist and continuity illustrator at Walt Disney, Bill Peet created a menagerie of memorable characters. As he himself noted, "I write about animals because I love to draw them. Most of my animal characters have human personalities, and some are much like the people I know."

At Walt Disney, where Bill Peet worked for 27 years, he was a key participant in the production of classic films such as Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians for which he was not only an artist, but the screenwriter as well.

Bill Peet’s signature style enabled him to create fast-paced stories of fantastical adventure delivered with warmth and laugh-out-loud hilarity. His unfailing humor did not, however, prevent him from addressing such poignant issues as kindness toward others and respect for the environment. Through the exploits of his characters, Peet offered his audience a chance to see themselves and their world through new eyes.

if every man pursued his own self-interest and obeyed only his "passions,"
the invisible hand would guarantee that everybody else benefited, too.
Published in 1776, The Wealth of Nations later had a profound
effect upon the nation born that year. The idea that "life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness" were unalienable rights, endowed by a Creator, fit
perfectly with the economic theories of Adam Smith. "Life, liberty and estate"
was the well-known phrase that Thomas Jefferson amended slightly for the
Declaration of Independence. The United States was the first country to
discard feudal and aristocratic traditions and replace them with a republican
devotion to marketplace ideals. More than two centuries later, America"s
leading companies—General Motors, General Electric, ExxonMobil,
Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Boeing, et al.—have annual revenues larger than those
of many sovereign states. No currency is more powerful than the U.S. dollar,
and the closing prices on Wall Street guide the financial markets of Tokyo,
London, Paris, and Frankfurt. The unsurpassed wealth of the United States
has enabled it to build a military without rival. And yet there is more to the
U.S. economy, much more, than meets the eye. In addition to America"s

NEVER a mistake with Richard Scarry!

When I was a little guy, I loved books by Richard Scarry! Now as a daddy, I'm overjoyed that my little girl, Riley, gets into this book that she got by Scarry.

Welcome to Busytown! This book consists of 3 stories that basically have 1 thing in common. They have Huckle Cat, and they all had Lowly Worm as the main attraction in each story. Huckle and Lowly are best buds!

The first story, "The Best Mistake Ever" is simply about how Huckle Cat is sent to the grocery store. There's just one small problem: Huckle forgets the shopping list that Mother Cat wrote out. But Lowly Worm comes to the rescue!! Or does he? While Huckle thinks that his mother wants cream, Lowly's pretty certain that it's ice cream. And when the question of apples comes up, Lowly thinks that apple pie is just what Mother Cat ordered. Will Mother Cat be pleased?

Story #2 is "A Visit to Mr. Fixit". Huckle Cat gets his mother a cuckoo-cuckoo clock for Mother's Day. But with Lowly Worm riding on the back, he takes a corner too fast and crashes into Postman Pig, and breaks the clock. After being ordered to fix the bell on his bicycle by Officer Murphy, he makes a trip to Mr. Fixit to fix both the bell, and a broken cuckoo-cuckoo clock. What will Mr. Fixit do with the broken pieces?

Then finally you have "Best Friends" on Huckle Cat's birthday. But for some reason in school, Lowly Worm is hanging around the other kids, but not Huckle. This is quite unusual, but Huckle gets the surprise of his life!

And this is something great for your kids! Richard Scarry is always fun, and it's never a mistake to go with his books. Kids and Richard Scarry go hand in hand!

A Winner in Our House!

Our nearly three-year old daughter simply loves this book. She first got Richard Scarry's "Biggest Word Book Ever" (which I ABSOLUTELY recommend!), and therefore already knew the characters. She cracks up at the clumsy Mr. Frumble, who is always having accidents, and she is attracted to the kindness and friendship between Lowly Worm and Huckle Cat. She recognizes emotions and personality traits in this book...Mommy Cat is angry, Huckle Cat is sad, poor Mr. Frumble is "accident prone". These emotions are displayed in an age appropriate way. This book is a compilation of 3 short stories, and is one of the first "big girl" books she consistently wants to read, morning and night. Definitely the best few bucks I ever spent!

Cute stories/great price!

We love this book! The two we read the most are * One about Huckle buying a mother's day cuckoo clock that he drops. At the same time his bike bell stops ringing, so he takes the clock and the bike bell to be fixed. Mr. Fixit mixes up the sounds, but the end result is great! * One about Huckle & Lowly being best friends. One day Huckle waits for Lowly, but he's no where to be found. At school, Lowly hangs out and laughs with others...Huckle is sad. Only to find out that the class has planned a birthday party for Huckle. In the end, Huckle is happy. There's another story about Huckle doing the grocery shopping for his mother. He buys junk food instead of good food (with Lowly's recommendation), since he left the shopping list at home. It's cute, too!

Where has this Cookbook Been all my Life?

I bought this cookbook after hearing it mentioned in the movie, Julie and Julia. Evidently, this was THE HOT cookbook at the time with over 300,000 in print. I of course bought this used, a 1957 copy.

In addition to many VERY delicious recipes that have gone out of fashion, but could use a revival, there are VERY funny stories and some famous / infamous, clever presentations of the times, like...

Baked Alaska in a real flower pot

Cream cheese dip with sliced green olives and a celery stick in the top, all shaped to form a pineapple

The Poppy Seed Dressing that is still served at Neiman Marcus today, 50 - 60 years later!

Ice Cream Sundaes - Ice Cream, whipped up with a hand mixer, then served in a big brandy snifter and toppings in small snifters

This is a GREAT useable cookbook. There are a few things I may not try that involve a little too much aspic / gelatin for my taste - but what the heck, I'm of the age where I've never EVEN had aspic. It may be great! It will surely start a conversation!

Helen Corbitt is my hero! Her cookbooks are full of down to earth classic recipes with a touch of Texas. She is right up there with Childs, in my humble opinion. She stayed in the kitchen, not in front of the bright lights. Glad I found this one to finish mycollection.

Helen Corbitt is still one of the best cooks. I am partial to the 60's since that is when I attended Texas Tech and I look back on those days with great appreciation. I like what Ms. Corbitt did for Neiman Marcus, and I like her style of cooking.

Great book for the Baby Smurfs!

I smurfed this book for my son the day he was born! I would read it every day to him as he smurfed in his crib. He would laugh and coo (JUST LIKE BABY SMURF!) whenever I would read it to him. He is 13 now, but I still make him sit down and read it with me on occasion. Great training tool for young readers who are learning. Smurfing smurfalicious!
If you can smurf this, you must do so as soon as possible!

they will like this. There is no arc

This is a very basic book which runs you through the everyday life of smurfs minus any drama. If your child likes smurfs, they will like this. There is no arc, no mystery, just an easy, relaxing read of having smurfs doing pretty much what many people do every day.

I like smurfs: when I was still with the ex-German-husband, they were my choice of tourist souvenir when we visited Germany. I like plastic figurines and the Germans seem to have smurfs everywhere even though they are originally Franco-Belgian...probably because Schleich makes the little figures, as it does all those cool animals.

There has been quite a number of papers written on the smurf world in general, namely the absence of females bar one bordering on a bimbo, the possibility of anti-semiticism in Gargamel and the dictatorship of papasmurf in his red communist pants. The original comic was started in the late '50's so maybe the times were bleeding into the comic, as is not uncommon. I personally think Peyo, pen name of Pierre Culliford, looks very much like Gargamel.

Back to this particular book in question. My kid loves it. It's a bit like a reference book: the smurfs wake up, dress, wash, eat, clean, play, learn, compete, relax, work and then go back to bed. They do it as a group, bar lone papa smurf putting them to bed [as a group]. There is no 'I'm an individual-lost-scared-unhappy' vibe happening, there is no 'who am I?' vibe happening. There is no 'what's life about?' vibe happening. It's all friendly, comforting and fun. Makes you want to be a smurf.

I'd recommend it if you were passing a shop and it wasn't too pricey. It is an easy book to read when you are brain-dead and want to have that five minutes bonding but don't want to get into using your brain because the day has been long and you can't wait to see your kid sleeping like an angel, dreaming of collective smurfs.

mankind," Smith wrote, "seems to have been the original purpose intended by
the Author of nature." The workings of the Lord could be found not in the
pages of a holy book, nor in miracles, but in the daily, mundane buying-and-
selling of the marketplace. Each purchase might be driven by an individual
desire, but behind them all lay "the invisible hand" of the Divine. This invisible
hand set prices and wages. It determined supply and demand. It represented
the sum of all human wishes. Without relying on any conscious intervention
by man, the free market improved agriculture and industry, created surplus
wealth, and made sure that the things being produced were the things people
wanted to buy. Human beings lacked the wisdom, Smith felt, to improve
society deliberately or to achieve Progress through some elaborate plan. But
if every man pursued his own self-interest and obeyed only his "passions,"
the invisible hand would guarantee that everybody else benefited, too.
Published in 1776, The Wealth of Nations later had a profound
effect upon the nation born that year. The idea that "life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness" were unalienable rights, endowed by a Creator, fit
perfectly with the economic theories of Adam Smith. "Life, liberty and estate"
was the well-known phrase that Thomas Jefferson amended slightly for the
Declaration of Independence. The United States was the first country to
discard feudal and aristocratic traditions and replace them with a republican
devotion to marketplace ideals. More than two centuries later, America"s
leading companies—General Motors, General Electric, ExxonMobil,
Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Boeing, et al.—have annual revenues larger than those
of many sovereign states. No currency is more powerful than the U.S. dollar,

has enabled it to build a military without rival. And yet there is more to the

A Rilke that reads as if Rilke wrote in English

I've found other translations of Rilke obtuse, frustratingly difficult to get the first layer of sense out of, let alone the multiple layers and connections going all the way down. Poulin's translation renders Rilke crisply, briskly musical, urgent, hallucinatory, and true. I read these words in this order and they succeed in completely breaking me open. Which I count as a poetic success.

A fantastic collection tragically edited short

My father's copy remains one of my favorite Christmas books, but when I bought this planning on reading it to my children, I hadn't noticed that many of the letters were cut short without any warning or explaination.

If you plan on buying this FANTASTIC book, avoid the version with fold out letters enclosed within. All the letters are cut down to one page, regardless of their original length.

Letters is a Lovely Christmas Gift

Written and illustrated by J.R.R. Tolkien, Letters From Father Christmas is a charming collection of personal letters that Tolkien send to his children under the guise of Father Christmas. While they begin rather simply, over the span of 20 years a fascinating tale is spun; with Father Christmas getting into crazy antics with his best friend North Pole Bear and fending off invasions from goblin armies. And the illustrations that are included are a lot of fun. The lengths to which Tolkien goes to to create this elaborate fantasy for his children are really amazing. Yet the letters tell an incomplete story, and are colored by outside influences that aren’t always clear. Still, Letters From Father Christmas is a remarkable book that’s full of the wonder and magic of the season.

It seems almost sacrilege to infringe upon a book as soulful and rich as Willa Cather's My Ántonia by offering comment. First published in 1918, and set in Nebraska in the late 19th century, this tale of the spirited daughter of a Bohemian immigrant family planning to farm on the untamed land ("not a country at all but the material out of which countries are made") comes to us through the romantic eyes of Jim Burden. He is, at the time of their meeting, newly orphaned and arriving at his grandparents' neighboring farm on the same night her family strikes out to make good in their new country. Jim chooses the opening words of his recollections deliberately: "I first heard of Ántonia on what seemed to be an interminable journey across the great midland plain of North America," and it seems almost certain that readers of Cather's masterpiece will just as easily pinpoint the first time they heard of Ántonia and her world. It seems equally certain that they, too, will remember that moment as one of great light in an otherwise unremarkable trip through the world.

Ántonia, who, even as a grown woman somewhat downtrodden by circumstance and hard work, "had not lost the fire of life," lies at the center of almost every human condition that Cather's novel effortlessly untangles. She represents immigrant struggles with a foreign land and tongue, the restraints on women of the time (with which Cather was very much concerned), the more general desires for love, family, and companionship, and the great capacity for forbearance that marked the earliest settlers on the frontier.

As if all this humanity weren't enough, Cather paints her descriptions of the vastness of nature--the high, red grass, the road that "ran about like a wild thing," the endless wind on the plains--with strokes so vivid as to make us feel in our bones that we've just come in from a walk on that very terrain ourselves. As the story progresses, Jim goes off to the University in Lincoln to study Latin (later moving on to Harvard and eventually staying put on the East Coast in another neat encompassing of a stage in America's development) and learns Virgil's phrase "Optima dies ... prima fugit" that Cather uses as the novel's epigraph. "The best days are the first to flee"--this could be said equally of childhood and the earliest hours of this country in which the open land, much like My Ántonia, was nothing short of a rhapsody in prairie sky blue. --Melanie Rehak

Grade 7 Up--In Jim Burden's accounting of his life with, and without, Antonia Shimerda, listeners are transported to the hardscrabble Nebraska prairie and the rural immigrant experience. When Jim first sees the Shimerda family, immigrants from Bohemia, disembarking from the same train that is taking him West to live with his grandparents, he has no idea the impact they will have on his life. Nostalgically, he remembers the good and bad times they had on their respective farms and creates his portrait of Antonia, an independent and tough survivor. The brief biography of author Willa Cather at the beginning of the CD explains how her life mirrors Antonia's life in many ways, helping listeners understand the context of the story. Patrick Lawlor's rich, fluid voice lends an air of sophistication to Burden, reinforcing the class structure inherent at the beginning of the 20th century. Lawlor's attempts to create voices for the characters often falls flat. Since the novel is Burden's reminiscence, it would have been better told in Burden's voice alone. A TIMELESS AMERICAN CLASSIC...

I first read this book when I was in junior high school. I admit that, at the time, I did not appreciate the strengths of the book and the quality of its writing. I am quite glad that I decided to give it another chance, as I now understand why it is considered to be a classic in literature. It is simply a beautifully written book, covering many of the themes that one stumbles across in life and coalescing them into a work of extraordinary breadth.

The book is the story of two young people, Jim Burden and Antonia Shimerda. They meet for the first time when Jim is ten years old and Antonia is fourteen. Recently orphaned, Jim has moved to the Great Prairie to live with his grandparents in Nebraska. Antonia, on the other hand, has been wrenched from her homeland in Bohemia, emigrating with her parents to the United States and finding herself in Nebraska. Jim and Antonia's chance encounter on a train sets the stage for the forging of a friendship and unconditional love that time will not diminish.

The book relates the harshness of immigrant life through the eyes of Jim, who narrates the events contained in the book. There is a relentless stoicism about the book, which is written in spare, clear prose. With intense imagery and descriptive exactitude, late nineteenth century Nebraska comes to life. It also relates the paths that each of the characters choose to follow, as well as the vicissitudes of life that mold and shape them in ways that no one would have imagined.

The focus of the book, which is also a coming of age tale, seems to be on the female characters and their strengths. Consequently, the book has a faintly feminist undercurrent to it, as all the women in it seem to be survivors, despite the hardships that they encounter. This is, without a doubt, a life affirming book, wrought with great feeling and a decided sense of time and place. Yet, despite its poignancy, the book is surprisingly unsentimental and straightforward. It is a testament to the author's literary talent that this book has emerged as a timeless classic. Bravo!

I dearly loved this book! I now know exactly what it was like to live somewhere I'll never live, during a time ( in the past ) that I can't ever live in! I know, in beautiful ,descriptive detail exactly what it looked and felt like, there and then. And much of the time, my heart was full , in my chest, reading about how these people felt about each other. How I wish every book I read could be this good.

Really, the best way to read The Hobbit

Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR

I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

The Hobbit Jemima Catlin

I just wanted to take the time to update anyone who is interested in purchasing this illustrated edition of The Hobbit. As you probably know, there aren't many illustrated editions of the hobbit and most that are illustrated aren't all that incredible. So far, my favorite edition has been the one by Alan Lee. I must say, it's hard to top his work. Alan Lee really helped bring the story to life for me when I first read this incredible adventure by Tolkien. However, because I believe that The Hobbit is a tale directed at the hearts of children and adults that are young at heart, I believe that Jemima Catlin's illustrated edition has topped even the great Alan Lee's. First off, the quality of this book is excellent. The book has been wrapped in cloth so the book feels high quality and soft to the touch. Also, the cover has a beautiful illustration from the book that includes carefully placed gold etching on the leaves, title, and author's name. This really gives the book a nice luster and shine. The book doesn't come with a book jacket and honestly I think that was smart based off of how high quality the book feels and looks. It just doesn't need a cheap paper jacket to cover such a beautiful looking book.

The illustrations that are presented in the book are a thing of beauty. Not only are there a great many (every two or three pages or so) but they are incredibly colorful and really pop when you look at them. I do think the illustrator's style is to appear more colorful and simple at first glance, but at the same time you will look at the illustrations carefully and see the amount of time and effort that she put into this work. I love this style of simplicity and use of color. Though not the exact same style, I feel like it reminds me of illustrators like William Steig who just have this incredible knack for bringing out amazing details with small illustrations. In fact, I truly and desperately hope that Jemima Catlin will be commissioned for Lord of the Rings. If you happen to read this Jemima, I just wanted to say thanks for putting so much passion and hard work into this book. I look forward to reading this to my children someday and plan on using your version when I do! As a side note, I should mention that some of Tolkien's original maps are included in the front and back of the book.

Lastly, it wouldn't be an appropriate review of The Hobbit without mentioning how amazing this story really is. If there is any part of you that believes in things like magic, risk-taking, adventure, friendship to the end, finding faith in the smallest of people or things, and good triumphing over evil, this is the book for you. I fell in love with the characters of this story and am thankful for authors like J.R.R Tolkien for having that God-given ability to captivate readers through these characters and the adventures they set out on. Every time I read this book I feel like I'm a kid again and that in itself is a great thing in my eyes. However, as an adult this book not only brings about those childhood feelings, but also strengthens my personal faith, and leads me to believe that those who truly live life to the fullest are those who go against the flow, take risks despite the fears or consequences when they know that it's in the name of doing what they feel is right inside of there hearts. I think there really is some of Bilbo Baggins in all of us and we learn a great deal from his adventure.

If you cannot tell, I love this book. It is saying a lot for me that this is my favorite edition of the book so far. This truly is a high-quality, gift edition that you will be very proud to own. Don't hesitate to purchase! Thank you J.R.R Tolkien and Jemima Catlin!
