About the Author
Floyd C. Watkins received his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University and taught at Emory University, where he was Charles Howard Candler Professor of American Literature. He authored over twenty books in the field of American literature including titles on Faulkner, Wolfe, Hemingway, and Eliot.

A Phenomenal Resource

About six years ago as an English major at Emory University in Atlanta, I took a wonderful literature course under Dr. William B. Dillingham, one of this book's coauthors. This book was a required purchase (of course). When I pulled it out to use yet again today, I decided to see if it was still being sold on Amazon. I'm so glad it is.
This little book (of which I own the 10th edition) has been an invaluable resource through the years. With a B.A. in English, I am a magazine editor and pride myself on knowing grammar and punctuation, but every once in a while I need a good resource to answer my questions, and this one comes through for me.
Really written for students, with brief quizzes at the end of each chapter, this book is a handy desk reference. The first part of the book goes over the basics (parts of speech, punctuation). The last part addresses the rules for writing research papers.

An older edition was my go-to reference for almost 50 years - the new edition is even better! This is a keeper!

I used an earlier edition when I attended community college in 1968 and I've used it ever since. I have had it next to my desk in every job I've held. As an educator, I always showed it to students when working with them. It is usually the only reference I need, and I use it often. I had assumed it went the way of all good texts, but a few weeks ago I accidently found out it was still alive and well and available in a new edition! I was excited and told everyone about it!
I just got the latest edition and I love it. I want to spend time with it to get familiar with all of its new features and updates. I love the checklist for papers on the inside back cover, and having accuracy and logic presented before writing, grammar, etc.
Highly recommended for high school on up! This a book you don't want to sell. Keep it and use it! I can't live without it - really!
